Results & Photos of the Mallow 10 mile road race - Sun 22nd Mar 2015

The weather conditions for the Mallow 10 this year were almost perfect...dry, mild with a very light wind. It may have been a little too warm at times early on with the sunshine but it clouded over later which made things a lot more comfortable.

This was also the first year of the 'new' course. In reality, it was much the same as previous years except the start and finish points had changed. This resulted in a short downhill start with an extra climb up from the river. Overall, I thought it didn't have much impact in terms of times and I think it was about as hard as last year. Some people have compared the course to Ballycotton and said it was easier? I thought overall, they're both about the same....some small hills but nothing much.

Mallow ac and the organizing committee did a excellent job as per usual. The stewarding, the catering, traffic management, the pacers and all the volunteers did a excellent job. Top class.

Fair play to all involved in Mallow AC. Excellent all round - route, marshalling, water.. And the food afterwards - first class! Don't think anyone could have a complaint!

Well done to Mallow AC for organising an excellent race. And to the legend who was blasting out Meatloaf at mile 2..fair dues to you sir!

A big thanks to all involved in the Mallow 10 - great weather, the patient stewards, people at the water stops, foods afterwards, thanks to all involved for a good day.

Great work by Mallow AC again, top marks! Huge thanks to all involved.

New route could be a little congested at the start but people seemed to position themselves more appropriately than in Ballycotton I think.

John,
Did anybody pick up a goodie bag in the male changing room in the centre in error. I had put my garmin heart rate monitor into the bag at the finish . I couldn't locate the bag when I went back to collect my gear bag.
Well done Mallow A/C and volunteers very well organised event.

Race ran like clockwork, one of my favourite events, thanks to all at Mallow AC.

Huge Congrats and well done to all at Mallow AC for a brilliant day out yesterday. Weather was fab, course was lovely, and a lovely PB was achieved.
The stewards and helpers were excellent and the grub after was second to none.
Definitely one of my favourite races on the calendar!
Keep it up!

Great to see Martin Fagan coming down to Munster to run one of our ten mile races.

Brilliant from start to finsh...Ran as the 65 minute pacer and was a real pleasure to be part of this super event....The food after was unreal! Well done to Mallow AC and all involved! Be back next year for sure!!

Mallow AC - I had problems registering way back but it was sorted by Mallow AC and post race Im ever so glad I got a spot.
A huge pat on the back for every person who put yesterdays race together. Committee, stewards, Water station helpers, Guards (the boys in blue had an amazing sense of wit about them yesterday!!!)tea ladies, sandwich and cake makers....EVERYBODY
It was my first Mallow 10 and for me it went amazingly well. Loved everything about it, yes I had prepared for it but I did not think I would achieve a PB but I did!!!
Well done again Mallow AC cannot wait until next year!

Winner did the crime and served the time. Move on. He was best on the day. Those times were run years ago as well and nobody questioned it then. Very few can go sub 49 in Cork, (except Mark Hanrahan who had a super run yesterday).

Really enjoyed yesterday and the organisation was top class. My first Mallow 10 but I will be back fo more. I knocked over 2minutes off my previous time for a 10 mile so very happy all around. Well done Mallow A.C.

Fabulously organised race. thanks to all stewards, music dj's along the route and for outstanding hospitality afterwards. Definitely the best 10 mile race in Cork without a shadow of a doubt. Take a bow Mallow A.C and everybody else involved:-)

Double standards here.A cork man tested positive for the same drug and was shunned from the sport.Said he was retiring and did.Why is this any different?

Just for balance, the winner of this race is a previous, disgraced cheat. I don't subscribe to this fawning over him.
Fact : he deliberately and knowingly took banned substances to gain an advantage over his fellow athletes. I'm sorry, if I'm in a minority of one here, but I am all in favour of a zero-tolerance policy on this topic. Athletes who deliberately and knowingly cheat to gain unfair advantage over their fellow competitors, should not be given a 2nd chance. What they have done is too deliberate and calculated. They do it hoping to get away with it and not be caught.
I'm all for 2nd chances in certain circumstances in life - after all, none of us is perfect, but in this case, and similar other cases, there should be no second chances.
It is too calculating and deliberate.

Re Martin Fagan. Check his history and the full story before making a cheap shot. An inspiration, not a pariah, in reality. Well done Mallow, great event.

Martin Fagan should not be allowed take part in any athletic events. He cheated in his sport and has fooled anyone who feels sorry for him.

I would like to say what a nice fella Martin Fagan is as well. Met him after while I was leaning against a car recovering. Recognised the tattoos and asked him was he who I thought he was. Sound normal bloke who asked me how I found it and was actually interested. I was 19 mins behind him ! He told me he is running Zurich marathon next month. I said I hoped he runs olympic marathon for ireland. Its funny how meeting someone genuine gives you a feel for what reasons they may have had for taking perfornance enhancing drugs. One thing I could be sure of anyway it wasnt for ego. This country forgives people who do far worse and are complete arseholes as well if you ever met some of them. I hope Martin Fagan can be given the benefit of doubt now and supported for what he is. A nice lad and a talented runner.

you don't know the full story, how he cheated knowingly and lied to friends. if they guy was so depressed by the sport, why did he come back . Cathal Lombard cheated and people treated him like a criminal, he was booed and jeered when he came Back to the sport. if your wife cheated on you with your best friend would you forgive them ??

This is not the Martin Fagan discussion forum.Yesterday was all about Mallow AC and the excellent event they hosted.
Well done to all concerned. Can't speak highly enough, well organised other race organisers would do well to take pointers.

Well done to Martin Fagan on a fine run. We all make mistakes....guys, get over it! Come back to Munster soon Martin.

Agree with comment from Diarmuid, lots of cheap shots here, which one of us has never made a mistake. I wecome Martin Fagan back as i would Cathal Lombard. Interesting to hear what the elite think.

John Desmond said...

ok guys, as someone said, this is about the Mallow 10 and not Martin Fagan.

There will always be debate about Martin and what he did...some will support his return, some won't.

We better draw a line under it for now.

Anonymous said...

Agree 100%. Wrong message being sent out with allowing a drug cheat take local club prize money. ...explain that to kids

Anonymous said...

Diatmuid. No one is having a cheap shot.Martin is the one who took a "cheap shot" knowingly. It wasn't an impulse as it was ordered on the net apparantly then he had time to think about it.Then took it. Im sure the runners he is beating are depressed.Im sure if he gets selected for the Olympics and the runner who misses out will be depressed. Is it ok for them to go out and take EPO to even the score. He has taken it for God knows how long and is still benefiting from it.As a person he may be the nicest person you could meet but as an athlete he should not be held up as a shining light and example to young people.I agree with forgiving him as a person and letting him get on with his life but as an athlete his reputation is tarnished and personally anything he does is worthless and the work of PEDS

Fantastic run sunday. Weather was superb but the shade out by the racecourse was welcomed. My first 10 mile ever- delighted wit how it went will try be back again next yr. Unbelievably well organised everyone were so supportive along the way from marshals to guards to first aiders to supporters. Loved the sprint to the finish & the fact that the traffic were so obliging not to drive people into the ditch. Roll on 2016 :)

Find it strange that no one has mentioned that the small changes to the course from previous years were detrimental to good times?Funneling over 1000 runners into a narrow stretch of road just after the start line made for uncomfortable and slow running, add to that the pull up out of the town meant the first mile times were significantly slower. The last Km to the finish line was also slower compared to the lovely run along the park road to last years finishing line. Not knocking the event because Mallow AC put on a great race but it's a pity the changes had to happen.

JOHN, YOU SAID NO MORE COMMENTS ON MARTIN FAGAN. THEN YOU LET TWO PEOPLE TAKE VERY CHEAP SHOTS ON HIM. MARTIN FAGAN HAS EVERY BIT OF PASSION IN ATHLETICS AS YOU HAVE AND MAYBE EVEN MORE. HE MOST CERTAINLY HAS MORE LOVE FOR ATHLETICS THAN SOME OF THE PEOPLE HERE MAKING COMMENTS. I WOULD MUCH RATHER TO BE COMPETING AGAINST A RUNNER WHO IS SORRY AND SEEKS FORGIVENESS THAN SOMEBODY WHO IS BITTER AND UNFORGIVEN.

John Desmond said...

The comments on Martin were left just after mine so they may have no seen my comment.

That's about it for Martin. I think it's probably fair to say that no matter race he does, there will be those who approve or disapprove of him.

Sorry to anyone who wants to leave any more comments about Martin but if I don't draw a line under it, it will go on back and forth for ages.

Agree with second last comment found new course tougher!!

Yes no major hills but think the first few drags took the toal in the end!!!

As I was leaving a man was just finishing his race.the clocks were gone everything takin down.I'm wondering why officials were not aware that they still had a runner out on the course???

Re the course:
I commend the Mallow club on their attempts to bring the town centre into their event. It show cases running to those in the town.
Unfortunately their efforts coincided with the town council putting in a new single lane traffic management (mis-management) system.
For safety reasons this forced athletes to be corralled into a tight space. Having run Ballycotton 10 many times I can say it was still better than the BC10. Amazing spred in the hall afterwards - the club and it's members/helpers could not have done more.
Granted it doesn't have the prestige of Ballycotton but possibly the best 10 mile event in Cork ?

Well Done to everyone that competed in the Mallow 10 Mile last Sunday. I would like to thank all the pacemakers who did an excellent job on the day and especially the 1:30 pacers who gave us great encouragement and supplied us with truck loads of jelly beans to get us over the finishing line. I have to absolutely agree that in my opinion the Mallow10 is a far better 10 miler than Balltcotton.Get in get race done and go home.No hanging around before and after the race for hours.Well done Mallow again. Can we have twice a year?

Well done to mallow ac on another fantastic well organised 10 mile race its one of my favourite races of the year and would put it on pair with John treacy & ballycotten its my 3th time running it and only bad thing i have to say it i prefer the start and finish line of previous years think that half a mile up hill in the 1st mile just comes to soon into the race when runners are not fully warmed up beside that a great race
