Results & Photos of the 2015 Ballycotton 10 road race...Sun 8th Mar 2015

Conditions were almost perfect for this years Ballycotton 10 mile road race. The temperature was about 8 deg C, a gentle breeze with blue skies and sunshine. At times though, it felt an awful lot warmer. Once we turned that corner about 5.7 miles and the wind was to our back, the heat seemed to soar and it felt more like mid July than March.

In the mens race, Sergiu Ciobanu finished 1st to make it 5 years in a row.

These are the top 10 men and women...

A great day, superbly organised as always but the water station was a DISASTER!! No water left when we arrived, we had to pick up discarded bottles off the road as we were gasping. Luckily some kind souls nearby had a water station set up outside their house and we got some there. Also, all the Mars bars were gone when we got to the finish!! A very poor show in what was otherwise a great event. What a shame!!!

Anonymous said...

Great race, great atmosphere, water station was a disaster though..big bottles with a screw top?? Crazy..

Anonymous said...

Could not agree more with you the lack of water was a joke, i mean it's not as if they didn't know how many runner's were out and that it was so hot.!!!

Anonymous said...

water stations weren't great by all accounts.

Anonymous said...

water water every where but not a drop to drink at 3 mile and 7 mile mark and don't complain the official's wont like it.

Unknown said...

should not need water over that distance - should be fully hydrated before hand

Anonymous said...

No water stations at mile 3 and mile 7 when i complained about it the officials were not helpful also not enough mars bars skimping on the simple things.

Anonymous said...

with the volume of runners, the water station should have been at both sides of the road, had to stop at station due to conjestion. great day besides, will be back 2016

Anonymous said...

Would you people get a grip, complaining about Mars Bars, its a road race and the only on your mind should be getting round safe and achieving your goal, bring some food in your car for afterwards if your Hungary.

Anonymous said...

It might be pointed out to new clubs that running under other club runners names is against race rules. Read race entry rules. It was noticed today that a west cork club had many runners running on other peoples numbers.

Anonymous said...

The water stations were a disaster! !!!!!Very disappointing .

Anonymous said...

Saturday is the day for drinking the water , it's 10 miles , have a bit of cop on

Anonymous said...

What's the capital of Hungary? Ate😄 there's no excuse for not having 2 water stations. Don't mind the pompous cranks who say otherwise. Would the organisers people fainted?

Anonymous said...

I posted earlier this week that the lack of water at this Race was a Massive risk considering the numbers involved.

This was a cost cutting exercise that went badly wrong.

Ballycotton Running Promotions have always offered a great Running Package on the Summer series and the annual 10 but with the increase in numbers of down the field Runners, all options must be catered for.

It's not good enough...

Anonymous said...

Another great 'sunny day 'organised by Ballycotton Running Promotions, thanks to all the organisers and volunteers involved.

Anonymous said...

Hungary is spelt hungry, should be enough mars bars for everyone in fairness, the event is going on long enough to also have enough water ! well done to all who did the race

Anonymous said...

well done BRP's another great event put on today for only €15.00 with numbers posted out and it included a booklet. Thank god for a well priced event unlike the up coming Tralee half marathon/full........will be back in 2016

Anonymous said...

People are saying it is only 10 miles. Distance has nothing to do with it. Some people were out there nearly 2 hours and got no Water on a hot day. The recommendation is to take water during exercise sessions longer the one hour which applied to a lot of people there today. Also AAI''s recommendations on water stops were ignored, they are the governing body.

Anonymous said...

With 2700 (give or take) starting and no doubt 2700 plus water bottles, mars bars and bananas being provided, there would have been more than enough if everyone took what they should have, 1 bottle of water, 1 mars bar and 1 banana. I have no doubt Ballycotton got enough to cater for everyone, they are not known for scrimping!!!! There was plenty of tea and biscuits in the school.
Also I'm sure that there are many of the organisers that start very early in the morning and finish long after the runners have all gone home only surviving on possibly a bottle of water, mars bar and banana..... if they have time. Stop moaning!! You got a lot for 15 euro, can you say a race that charged 25 euro upwards can offer you what we got today????

Anonymous said...

Some people are running 80-90mins, of course water is needed

Anonymous said...

jaysus bring a bottle belt if yer that concerned with getting a drink, its not as if its going to slow you down much if yer going that slow already to not get one from a station.. mars bars! hahaha I'll post my mars to anyone that wants it ,tis still in the back of the car..

Anonymous said...

Where did you learn/read that a runner 'should not need water' over 10 miles!!! This is the most incredibly uninformed and downright dangerous statement to make especially given the heat of today. No one with even only the slightest knowledge of athletics would, or indeed could, agree with that post. If there is no need for hydration during a race then why are there water stations in the first place? Be careful when 'doling out' advice like that,.

Anonymous said...

Great day... Fair play to Ballycotton promotions and all volunteers who gave up their time. Lovely day and great atmosphere..

I thought the one water stop was sufficient.. but would hope to see the water station at miles 3/7 back for 2016

The BallyCotton race is great value and a fraction of what you pay for some other races.

Well done again to the organisers and all who ran

First time doing it. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Great atmosphere and well organized.

Re the water station, it was OK but could of been better, I don't remember seeing a sign coming up to it to say it was ahead or which side of the road. When we got to it (was pacing a few for 75min) there was no water on the table, they were unloading it from the van! Manage to get one slightly afterwards and then passed it around to other runners as I didn't really need a whole bottle, just a small sup.

Will deffo come back next year to race it, want one of those top 100 shirts!

Had a brilliant day as usual in d great bally 10 thanks 2 all will d official results placing b on chip Times it would b nice to see thanks

Anonymous said...

I didn't finish last, but almost. There was water for me at the water point. I got a mug, I was in no state to eat a mars bar, or a banana. I ran my worst Ballycotton ever out of 7. My time is the only thing I have to complain about. The stewards were ignored by motorists leaving the village as well. I suggest people stop getting hung up on trivial matters like screw tops or a mars bar. Bring your own, or stash water like I did around the course.

Anonymous said...

Whatever side of the argument you fall upon, statements like "especially given the heat today" and " on a hot day" and "it was so hot" are way off the mark and, frankly, misleading - it didn't rise above 11C!!!!! If there was no water left and you needed some, well, that is misfortunate, but is probably due to inconsiderate greedy runners that we're running before you that took 2 bottles, and is not down to "bad organisation". And as regards bemoaning the lack of Mars bars.............. I have no further comments your honour.

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure about ye lads but I'd sooner have water available to me on the course than a Booklet (if a shortage of money is the problem and we had to choose one or the other).

Put up the registration by €5 (or even €10) next year and put out more water PLEASE if it's a case of not having enough money for the water. That should buy at least 10 extra bottles PER RUNNER!

Also, if there is a shortage of volunteers for the Water Stations, please take them off the mile markers (where they're counting out the time) and have them at another water station (I would put water ahead of counting out the time as a priority).

P.S. I brought my own water in a running belt (as did others), so how was there not enough water if not everyone stopped for it?

I don't understand why the results aren't listed as per the chip time finishes. Here is a link to the chip time order for the fastest 1500 chip times. Personally, I jumped over 100 places when changed to this format.

Results are always based on Gun times. The first person over the line wins the race, not a person who starts further back and runs a faster time.

Are the organisers getting complacent?? Water station was a disgrace....one side of the road....bottles were too big. Runners behind me did not get any. Ran out of coffee in the hall....a few biscuits on a plate. Look at Balllintoitis as a benchmark.

Anonymous said...

Water stop was complete congestion, when I got there, runners couldn't see tables ahead so we all went for the first table, the bottles couldnt be got out of packaging fast enough, bottles were far too big and runners were falling over each other to get to them. My sister in law was about 15minutes behind me and when she got to the table she was offered a dribble of water, there wasn't a bottle left. Then when she got to finish line, there wasn't a mars bar left, might sound silly but were not in the elite group, were never going to win the race so its the little things that get us over the finish line.
Yesterday was a very warm day and I'm not sure one water stop was sufficient.
The stewards out on the course were very good, course was kept clear for all runners, but when waiting for my sister n law to come in to the finish the steward at about the 100m mark had no interest in keeping people back off the road, this is when people need the encouragement the most, but spectators were all over the road and at several stages got in the way of the runners.
My first Ballycotton race was 2012, I had heard only good things about this race. Last year I heard there were issues with the times and now this year the water, don't drop your standards, I've never organised a race so I can't even imagine the work that goes into one like Ballycotton, but time to rethink and keep on top on the high standards that are already there. These hiccups seem minor but its these things that make a good race.

Anonymous said...

Are people serious with their comments? This was my first time running Ballycotton 10 and it's possibly the best event I ever ran. It was so professionally organised and the vibe around the place was brilliant.

Although I'm probably bias because I don't rate an event by how many mars bars I get or if the coffee was cold at the end. I tend to go by other things liked atmosphere, chipped time, accurate course, marking of mileage, support, closed road, things that actually matter in a race.

It's probably a case people are quicker to complain than compliment.

Two water stations needed

Anonymous said...

Amazing performances once again by Sergiu Ciobanu and Maria McCambridge. If some people are saying there was no water available at the water station they are hardly making it up. People here suggesting runners should have drank enough water the day before or on the morning of the race, or carrying their own water the whole way, or stashing it out on the course are getting carried away a bit. Some people would have under-trained for the race, and perhaps did their training early in the morning or late in the evening and would not be used to running in sunshine - and the sun usually does shine on day of Ballycotton 10!! Fair play to these runners who still turned up to run, giving it everything and more to complete the 10 miles and running all the way or maybe with the odd walk and finishing around two hours later totally and utterly exausted. If some of those runners did not manage to get water out on the course I'd imagine they would not have been happy about it. If some of the quicker runners took two bottles of water, they should have been entitled to two. Complaining that the bottles were too big or were twist offs is really petty stuff. Lots of fine performances and I'd say lots of pbs. Well done to all.

John Desmond said...

Just one stat...roughly 60% of the finishers were over 80 mins. When people are out that long, water is required.

Anonymous said...

My first Ballycotton 10 i enjoyed it very much. I didnt think the hill was that tough but i didnt beat my target of 90 mins either. I finished 59 seconds over. Hopefully next year. well done to you all.

Unknown said...

My first time doing the ballycotton 10 and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed over all. Yes the water station was poor and the climb back up the packed hill when you've crossed the finish for water was tuff enough too. In comparison to the dungarvan 10 I done last month ballycotton is way behind. Don't know if I'll be back next year.

Anonymous said...

regarding the "heat".It has been a cold winter and if you train early or late you would most likely have been training at 1-2 deg most of the time or less.So there is at least a 10 degree rise in what the body has become used to.Therefore you would feel hot as you haven't had time to adjust.11deg is obviously not warm and even taking high humidity into account should not pose problems like heat stroke etc.It is just your perception of the temperature in your mind that made it feel warm.
Regarding water.I think 1 water station is enough personally.I would not drink in races except for the marathon. You don't need water on most training runs. However given the comments Im sure BRP will take it into account and respond by restoring 2 stations. They have always listened and changed if necessary.
I haven't seen any comments regarding the road surface and maybe while not as bad as 2 -3 years ago is still rough in places,Not expecting a track but you did have to watch out for holes etc

I loved the race yesterday; it was my second time running it. A good few of us came down from Dublin and really enjoyed the whole weekend in Cork and especially the race. The atmosphere in the village is great, the marshalls are friendly, the course is lovely - and I think it's a fast course, more down than up. I love having the times called out at the mile markers, and I love my mug (& enjoyed the Mars bar :-)) I didn't actually take water as it's only ten miles and it wasn't midsummer, but I suppose there should be enough for everyone if you say there's a water station. My only grip (& it's not the organisers, it's the runners!) is the huge number of people starting in the wrong place. Everyone around me in the sub-75 section set off at about 8.30 pace. It's so hard to get into a rhythm when you're having to weave around people. But after the first mile or so it was fine.Overall I loved it and will be abck again - thanks, Ballycotton running & Ballycotton village!

Is it as a result of Irish Water that there was a cutback in the water! Has water metering started already in places!

In fairness the fact there would be 1 water station was well highlighted before the race and it should definitely not take away from what a well run and well organized race the Ballycotton 10 is and the tremendous effort and dedication given by all the volunteers and especially people like John Walshe whom dedicate so much time to giving runners such high quality races and absolutely spoiling runners for choice with all the first rate events on offer to runners throughout Munster.

For those bemoaning the fact they didn't get a Mars at the end, they will be overjoyed to know there's an offer on them in the shops at the moment giving 3 mars bars for €2 or a medium mars easter egg for €2.

All the people complaining should consider those who are ill or injured, those who can only dream of taking part in such an excellent race, on such a perfect day, in such a stunning location and in such a wonderful atmosphere and everyone who took part and finished the 10 mile run yesterday should be so grateful and appreciative of having the good health and well being to complete such a wonderful 10 mile course rather than bemoaning trivialities.

Firstly, BRP should pat themselves on the back for another great event. I would still like to offer my tupence worth too though and I am fairly sure that they are the kind of race organisers to take all constructive criticism on board.

I’d like to think that I am a fairly experienced runner yet I was gasping when I got to 5 miles. Personally, I feel that there should be two water stops at different parts of the course. I would also be more than happy to pay a few euro extra on my entry fee to ensure that small bottles were used.

Other than that, parking, atmosphere, stewardship, cups and mars bars were all perfect. I’m sure that next year’s event will be even better.

Anonymous said...

When you post a comment like this at least have the decency to name the club as you seem to have a club to name. Looks like you are just stirring it as it seems like this only happens in one club.

Anonymous said...

Thanks David Crowley. Now I know what place I actually finished in.

Chip timing is daft if the results aren't going to be published in order of the chip time. A simple, cheap stopwatch will tell us our individual times, but it's also nice to see where you finished in terms of the actual time it took you to complete the course.

Otherwise you're comparing the time it took for runners to complete different distances (e.g. one guy may have run 100m more in the same gun time and with a big crowd between him/her and the start line) -not the same distance and hence not the same 'race' (or not a fair comparison anyway).

Can you imagine the Olympics with just one run for all runners of the same distance on the one track -all at the same time?

It'd be kinda messy....

A running track wouldn't be too different in width as compared to the width of the road at the start of Ballycotton... so think of a (very long) running track with 2715 runners on it. Chip timing is the fairest solution.

Anyway, thanks again David for putting that list together.

Well done to Ballycotton on another great race, is there any update on the guy that fell down around the 9 mile mark, very sad to see.

Anonymous said...

My 5th Ballycotton and i really enjoyed it. Great atmosphere, friendly stewards. I have given up taking drinks during races unless absolutely necessary as it slows things down and can be chaotic even around the best run stations. That said i think plenty of water should be provided for participants at a few points on the course. I would imagine that is something that they could get sponsored by a water company. I am not bothered by the lack of mars bars and biscuits - it is impossible for the fee to look after all food needs. Regulars come prepared foodwise. Water however should be provided.

Anonymous said...

Your official finishing time is always the gun to finish line. Your chip time is for your own personal information only. As for the water, a friend of mine who used to run sub-2:30 marathons would never take a sip of water for the whole 26 miles. Others would be gasping for water half way through a five mile race. Everyone is different. I'd say very few people cared if there were one or two water stations there yesterday - as long as they got the water.

Anonymous said...

I think enough has been say about the the water stations. I'm sure the organisers have got the message.

More importantly a great win for Sergiu Ciobanu and pushed all the way by the signs of it.

Any news on the runner that was attended to by the paramedics ?

There was an issue a few years back where athletes were warned not to use another club members numbers I.e running under someone else's name. Deciding not to run the race after receiving an entry in your own name does not give anyone the right to give it to another club member. Penalties to the club in question would be no future ballycotton entries through their club. Safety and race respect being the main reasons. Not just Ballycotton rules. Athletic Ireland races in general.

Anonymous said...

Great race like every year. Pity so many taking issue with the waterstops .. I thought 1 station was enough.. I didnt take a bottle as it wasnt that warm.. but I appreciate every one is different. I have done some races where there wasnt even water at the finish and paid more than what Ballycotton 10 cost.

Im sure BRP will take on board the feedback and implement what ever changes are needed for next.

What everyone needs to remember is that these are volunteers trying to promote running. they give up a lot of free time weeks/months before the event. They dont change a fortune for the race. No matter how much planning you do things can always.

Have done Ballycotton 10 for the last 10 years.. and have enjoyed the day every time . Great atmosphere.. loads of encouragement especially through the village (in and out).. stewards did great work

Well done all involved..

Will be back for number 11 in 2016 :)

Re: Running under other people's numbers. You might have the odd case in where this for innocent reasons, injuries, unforeseen circumstances.

No need to start picking out individual clubs. Get a grip & stop stirring sh1t.

I reckon Maria McCambridge's new course record of 54:20 is easily the fastest 10 mile run by a female runner ever in Ireland. Check this out though, Sonia O'Sullivan won the Bupa Great South Run in Portsmouth in a then world best time of 51:00. Sonia was on fire back then. Hope Maria McCambridge gets to run in the Rio Olympics next year.

Think poor guy that collapsed at 9 mile mark is ok, it was from exhaustion, he was nearly there..

Having ran this race many times I do feel that this year was disappointing due to the water issue or lack off. For me Dungarvan 10mile is the best organised race in the country.

My First Ballycotton 10 and hopefully not my last! So great to run in such a fantastic event. I had heard so many great things about the race and have wanted to do it for a few years. I am not a competitive or fast runner by any stretch of the imagination but I managed to get around the course at a steady pace… I have one complaint about the whole thing. I was coming in to the village and was so disheartened by ppl walking across the road ( Had to duck and dive around ppl), cars and buses coming against me. I know, I was well passed the 1 hour 30 mark on the way back in, but it was just as much an effort for me to run the race as it was all the ppl who did it in less than an hour… I just hope in future years, ppl will stand back off the road and let us slow coaches through. A red and white tape along the last .75 mile might be an idea. Thanks to all the organisers. Ye did a fantastic job. Just wished the spectators had a little bit more respect.

Ballycotton is Ireland's mecca for road running races and the Ballycotton 10 is 'the must do' race. You can run all the other road races in Ireland but you haven't experienced the best till you have run the Ballycotton 10. Paying just 15 euros for such a race is phenomenal.

Anonymous said...

Ballycotton 10 has become too big for the village, sheer numbers, tight start, and parking issue,s makes the whole experience a bit stressful. Dungarvan and Mallow are top 2 10 milers in munster now.

Anonymous said...

It occurred to me looking around at the start that a lot of people were way overdressed for the weather. This is a big factor in why the water became an issue.

Anonymous said...

People are right to voice their opinions! If standards slip at all they keep slipping. Water stations getting cut, refreshments reduced, etc. None of that is acceptable. Being told that there are no mars bars, that the children ate them because we were too slow finishing. . .not acceptable. A brilliant run on such a fabulous day and a great buzz in Ballycotton as usual! Thanks. :)

Maura Turner said...

1 waterstation was well highlighted in the booklet provided to all,so it should not have come as a surprise. However I would recommend bringing back the second or possibly the third station. All other aspects were great particularly the stewards ie the parking facilities, toilets (now theres a thought for more)and time calling. A credit to the local community and organisers.

Anonymous said...

With regard to running under other people's numbers, there's no point punishing a whole club just because one person [allegedly] didn't stick to the rules. You can't expect clubs to be able to validate all their members are wearing the right numbers or even being able to confirm what members are at/not at the race at all. Maybe some of the smaller clubs at best, but it certainly wouldn't be possible for the big athletics clubs to police this.

No point in punishing scores of people simply because one person didn't go by the rules.

Anonymous said...

I'm assuming the reason it's advised not to run under another number is that if anyone had a serious accident or heart attack or the likes that the organisers would have wrong details for the athlete. With crowds as big as in ballyc it would be hard for St John's ambulance to find someone who might know the person.

Anonymous said...

So we all need to start on d line to get correct placing dat makes no scenes with so many runners chip times please

Anonymous said...

Plus it makes a pig's ear of the results, masters women giving their number to senior men etc. I wonder are there many people that day they are club members to get in. As far as I remember the form didn't ask me for my AAI number or anything. With club runners guaranteed entry I wonder what is stopping people just putting do ten any club.

When I ran the Waterford AC half marathon earlier in the year, all the food was gone. Kids and families troughed a lot of it. When I mentioned this on Facebook, one of the committee (Keith) stated that "we were under no obligation to feed anyone".

The publicity for the race read (quote/unquote):

"Entry costs €25 and includes:
Post-race refreshments (plenty of Blaas!!)"

I (and others) were livid with the attitude shown by WAC - committee members on the day telling us to forage for scraps around the hall.

If clubs are advertising food and refreshments as included in the entry fee, then (without sounding petty) there is a legal obligation to supply it. Dozens of people cleaned out the local Topaz in Waterford that morning.

There is a post on here about standards slipping, and the poster is 100% correct.

Some clubs like West Waterford AC get better and better every year - their organisation this year was exemplary.

Kevin said...

First time running it, and my thoughts on the water are 1 half way was enough for me at least. I didn't think half the bottle though, a smaller bottle would have been plenty. Maybe they could have spread the bins out, put some close to the water tables, most of the bottles ended up in the ditch.

I have to agree with others on the time - if it's being graded on gun time vs chip time you're going to have everyone pushing up as far forward as they can. Elite runners are reserved a place at the front so makes no sense not to use net time. I was over 2 mins reaching the actual start line through no fault of my own, trying to comply with the request for slower runners to start further back.

In fairness to WAC they put on an excellent event for great value. It wasn't their fault people were so greedy. I imagin the convenience of the venue worked against them in that regard with refreshments, start, finish and parking all in one place. Dungarvan refreshments are served 1 mile away from the finish so I imagine a lot of people just head off. Waterford introduced a lovely medal this year gave out chocolate milk and moved the race out to Carriganore which is an amazing facility. I don't know how you can say that race is slipping. Dungarvan don't even provide chip times for a field that large that means most people are timing themselves.

If you want water, bring some.
If you want a Mars bar after , go into the shop and buy one.
Seriously...€15 for a marshalled race, closed roads, chip timing, race book, mug, tea biscuits after.

What a random post about the WAC half? How were their standards slipping? That race has gone from strength to strength every year with loads of extras thrown in over time (medal, choc milk, class hat). It was a great event, one of the best I ran in last year. I am sure if the food ran out they will address it for next year no point chastising them for it or calling out individual volunteers.
I am sure when you bust yourself putting on a brilliant event only to have one element hammered on it is hard not to take it to heart. I feel sorry for those organisers in Ballycotton too who tried something which didn’t work and seems to be the only thing people noticed.
Legally obliged to provide food because they said plenty of blaas on a poster. Get a Grip

Really no need for chip times as only gun times count we all have stop watches. I Agree with the rest totally

Of course there is a need for chip times, that's what everyone looks at.

If it makes you feel better that you came 670th rather than 680th with results in order of chip times then so be it.
