Results of the Run in the Dark (Cork)...Wed 14th Nov 2012

Just over 1100 runners took to the streets of Cork last night for this unique charity event. As far as I know, it went off without too many problems? The dreaded bollards weren't as bad as expected but then again, I'm not so sure if the course could have handled many more people.

Did you take part in the 5k or 10k? What did you think of it? The course? The atmosphere? Afterwards? How did it compare to last year? Any suggestions for improvements?

The results of the 5k can be seen HERE

The results of the 10k can be found HERE

Well thanks for not telling anyone you were closing the city centre! Nothing on AA Roadwatch, Cork city web-site, Examiner or 96FM. Was in town yesterday and no notices up - thanks for ruining my evening!!!

Someone, give Pat a hug.

Great event! Organisation was spot on.

Poor Pat! Was lovely to do the run and nice that the city centre was opened up. Would have been nicer if it was advertised better though and if there was more of a buzz. I did the 10k. T'was tough!
Was a little disappointed by the goody bags:(

I didn't take part nor was I in town but I definitely saw it in print and pretty sure that I heard it on local radio as well.
Chin up though Pat, imagine if you were blind and in a wheelchair, that'd definitely ruin your evening.

Really enjoyable! Well organised considering the location, route and numbers of athletes.Good atmosphere also !!!

It was a good idea to split the 5 & 10k starts, eased the pressure a bit. I thought it went off really well.

Pat, it was on AA Roadwatch all this week, and on all major news bulletins yesterday. Do you normally drive your car around the city centre on Wednesday nights for an hour anyway ?

To Pat;
There's been a notice in the back of the Examiner over the last few week regarding the race and traffic delays.

5k. Great that the race starts were split. Lovely running around a closed city. No real problems with the roads being too busy, plenty of wide roads for any overtaking, if necessary. Look forward to next year again.

Had serious doubts about the route with such large numbers taking part but thankfully they were unfounded.

Great atmosphere, great course, great organisation for a great cause - long may it continue !

Yeah, great atmosphere, at most places there were people encouraging you on which was great, apart from the South Mall where the atmosphere was a bit flat! Thouroughly enjoyed the race though, I did the 10km, and managed to get a PB (know a few people who got a PB actually),didn't get as bottled-necked as i thought it would, although someone almost got taken out by a pedestrian pushing their bike!! Cheer up Pat :)

I did 10k but am showing up in 5k results. Other than that great race.

Thought I was on for a great PB, only to find that the course wasn't even 6 Miles!

I know runners were defintely aware of the race but those who didn't or don't run didn't know anything about it.

I think the comments are a bit tough on Pat but perhaps him/her saying it "ruined your evening" is a bit OTT. Cheer up !!!! ;-) Sure you might do it yourself next year ;-)!!!!

It was a well organised event with a fantastic buzz around the city. I think the weather also helped make it a great evening. Let's not forget the great cause it was in aid of either. 10/10 all round.

We really enjoyed run last night. We felt it was v well organised and a big step up on last year. There was a great energy & atmosphere before race. You had to keep your wits about you between footpaths and bollards but the stewards did their job very well making sure everyone was safe. Someone fell coming down Washington Street though, hope they are ok. Does anyone know?

Race was great in fairness.
Stewards did great work in the areas where it was anyway dangerous in fairness.
That person who clocked 6 miles on the course must have been cutting some serious corners!

I loved it, I did 5k, and for fun, not for a fast time, which is exactly what the route was...really nice to run around the streets of cork at night..no hassle with the narrow streets and bollards, however the more competitive folk blew a few people off the street :) I totally understand the competitivenes but not on this route!! Defo doing it next year, great stewarding. I had Mark in mind the whole way round and it was a privilege to be a part of it for him :) Judy

Was there as a supporter only for a change, everyone seemed very happy. What were the GPS distances ppl got though, course a bit off? Cyclists did very good job bringing the leaders round unharmed.

I'm not sure did the cyclist need to bellow at everyone to clear the streets for the leader. It gave him a huge advantage over those behind and its not as if it was going to be a PB

Can I remind people that this was a charity event - to raise money for charity!!! It was an honour to be part of it. Mark Pollock is such an inspiration to me and do many others. Well done to everyone who organised this event!!!

my garmin 310xt had the distance right on - a mapmyrun.com plot gave 10k as well. i would expect a bit of variation in gps distances with the ducking and diving required in passing/being passed and especially all the corners.

In response to the two posts about distance:
GPS watches will be affected by the proximity of tall building and trees, consequently streets like Maylor st, Princes St, Paul St, Oliver Plunkett St are likely to give rise to understating the distance.. Wrt the last post. MapMyRun, based on SPR, gives the distance as 5.92 miles. This race did not have a course measurement cert. from AAI.
