Results of the Kinsale Regatta 5 mile road race - Fri 30th July 2010

This race attracted a field of 203 runners which was well up on last year. As expected, some of the times posted were very fast due to all of the downhill running.

The full results are now available HERE

The traffic for the last mile in this race was extremly dangerous and put many runners at risk.It was allowed travel in both directions and really did not seem to be controlled properly at all. I had heard great reports of this race but I certainly will not be doing it again and risking my life for a badly organised race.

I have to agree with that comment. Lovely race, i.e. very scenic but very badly organised. Very little stewarts hence the problem with the traffic and friends of mine who came down to watch the race were asked to stand at a particular corner as runners were going the wrong way. This race should definitely be reviewed!

I agree with your other two commentators but I would also like to add that having to wait until almost 9.45 (yes 9.45) for any food to appear and NO cup of tea or coffee was a bit ridiculous. One had to buy a drink when the food managed to appear at last. The organisers would really want to get their act together.

John your reference to ''all of the downhill running'' is unfair. Agree opening two miles are fast but to go after PB one needs to stay very focussed there after for 3 very spread out miles. One can only compare improvement to prior year. There are other fast 5 milers, you seem to get caught up with this one. Agree with other comments on supervision. The food in nr later on was top class a step up on most events, hot food and varied snacks. Money collected went to a great charity. Lets get a balance here, room for improvement in supervision but broadly well worth doing.

I must agree with with my other fellow runners on safety issue of the 5mile Kinsale race. I found that after mile 2, alot of gaps appeared between groups of runners.
I found my self running solo for at least 2miles, not a stewart in site. I met at least 3 or 4 cars on pretty dangerous bends, doing my very best to avoid them and them me. I think the organisers want to take a good look at the very high standard set by other race organisers.I'll give this race a miss next time and give it 1 out of 10 due to the safety issue.

Hi John,
I also ran this race and found traffic quite heavy for the half mile between the bridge and the Trident Hotel, but maybe not quite as heavy as in other years. Apart from that section, traffic was almost non-existent.

Maybe traffic was heavier before or after I came in, but it wasn't a problem for me, and I have been in several scary situations (wrt traffic) in races over the years.

With regard to food, the food was there when I arrived - I don't recall what time it was, but I was the last person to leave the GAA dressing rooms). The canapes were absolutely delicious and I had too many. The race organisers spent €400 on food for this event.

The issue of food is always a 'hot topic' and people differ. Most race participants never wait after a race, some don't eat anything and others make up for it by eating all round them - I usually don't, but couldn't resist the canapes last Friday!

The point I'm trying to make is that no matter how hard they try, race organisers are NOT going to satisfy everyone when it comes to catering. ...and if they do, someone is sure to object!
