Results of the Cork Airport 5k run...Sun 22nd Nov 2015

There was a big turn out for this 5k run in Cork Airport organised by the Irish Independent newspaper.

"Our chosen charity partners for the event are The Cork City Hospitals Children’s Club and the Cork Mental Health Foundation. You can complete donations to either charity on the next page. Alternatively further information on how to raise funds for either online will be available in your confirmation email."

Again, where did all of the proceeds go? The runners are expected to donate extra to the 'charity partners'.

How is there so many late entry's on the results when everyone was pre registered in advance and it was sold out. Who did the entries and results for this race?

I was a late entry. I won 2 entries on Wednesday and had to give my details on the night. They gave away a lot of places over the week so I'd expect that is the majority of them. It is a pity I'm down as late entry.

My Run Results did the timing (Old staff from precision timing) but they wouldn't have much to do with the late entries. I had to fill out a form on the night even though I was asked by the organisers for details when I won the entries.

Overall I felt it was well organised. There must have been a lot of work and fair play to the volunteers who would have spent a long time hanging around.

Yeah.....I'd like to know what's going on here.....some people put on a commercial event in a capitalist economy....other people, of their own free will, spent their hard earned money on the event....a profit was made (presumably) by group A and members of group B had a good time. This can't be allowed to go on....runners should only be allowed to compete in a defined list of events that meet certain arcane criteria. Also what people do with their own money needs to be much more tightly controlled......Godsake

There is nothing wrong putting on a commercial event. It is an issue when it gives the impression that it is a charity event.

There was a similar race on in Shannon airport during the summer which was a great buzz. It wasnt the cheapest but all the proceeds went towards TLC4CF (Tipperary Limerick Clare for Cystic Fibrosis) and Milford Care Centre. I think the Cork one only gave just ten percent to the charities.

Unless someone is very naive then I think they'll realize that all these type of events are for profit. Both the Irish Independent and Cork Airport are commercial businesses and are not going to all this effort without some financial reward.

Cork Airport are in debt up to their necks and probably welcome any opportunity to make some extra money from their facilities.

All Irish newspapers are losing readers and advertising at a rapid rate and as their revenues plummet, they're look for any chance to get a new revenue stream outside of selling newspapers. In this case, it happens to be a race but it could be any event that attracts a crowd. They'll stick the name of a charity on the front of it to make it appear more attractive and then take a lions share of the takings.

The charities are desperate for money so they'll accept it from any source, even if they only end up getting a small percentage.

The clubs get €30 per head for providing race marshals and are desperate for money. It might be only crumbs from the table but it's better than nothing. If the organizers had to pay staff on overtime to do the same job then it would cost way way more than €30 per hear so it suits them.

In the end, everyone is getting something from it. It certainly wasn't a charity event though.

Very well Run event and atmosphere was great. Was a bit disappointed for another event to come up short in distance.

Some people are just negative. Get a life. Plenty of stewards. Water, fruit and yoghurt after, free parking, long sleeved t-shirt and a likely one off chance to run up and down the runway. Negative points, we were standing around too long. The weather we can do nothing about.

Why didn't ye clowns that are giving out about charity percentages etc not ask this beforehand??? I also won't be hiding behing an anonymous post. Any problems with what I've said, give me a shout.

I did this run - it was brilliant. Very well organised and a fantastic atmosphere.
I did it based on the fact that it was different from the norm it being on the runway and it was for a very worthy cause. I was however very surprised to learn afterwards that the stewards were not there on a voluntary basis, they were paid. And paid handsomely I might add at €150.....so even less than I thought going to the cause.

The local athletic clubs got €30 for every race steward they provided. I don't know where you got the €150 from.

As John said below. €150 is not at all accurate or true. Clubs received €30 for each steward they provided, none of which went to the steward themselves. The stewards were up there long before and long after this race took place on their own time. Many of whom checked you in at registration and then stood out on the course in the freezing cold.

Fair enough i may have been told an untruth.... But i was only stating what i and others were told on the night.....
your tone is a tad unfair, i attend lots of runs and appreciate 100% the job that stewards do out in all elements. Its a task ive undertaken myself. No run can happen without them.

My name is PJ Walsh, from St Finbarrs AC in Cork. I was the race director on the night of the airport run.

It was such a complicated event to organise, and the airport management and staff bent over backwards to make it happen. I imagine it cost the airport a small fortune to stage the event, contrary to all the comments made by the ANONYMOUS people, and they certainly did not receive any payment for doing so.

The Athletic clubs in Cork, who provided all the stewards, received a €30 payment per steward, the stewards DID NOT receive anything, they gave up their time for free. I and two members of Cork athletics county board organised the staging of the event with the aid of the airport authorities, on behalf of Brassies charity, and done it all voluntary, without payment. The amount of effort and organisation that went into that race was immense, over many weeks.

The money received from entries had nothing to do with Cork airport or cork athletics.

The amount of positive feedback received, before, during and after the event was overwhelming, from everyone that took part, more than any other event I have been involved with.

I hope this has cleared up any misinformation that the ANONYMOUS people have banded about.

it was very well organised PJ , i was one who helped on the night and also ran it was a great experiance to see the amount of work that goes into races beforehand,also the work afterwards.Just for confirmation i did not receive anypayment for the help i gave and enjoyed every bit from helping to running it

Marian Heffernan finished after Jill McCarthy, she shouldn't be listed as second lady finished. Look at the finish line video, a fellow crossed the line at 20:18. This is all rubbish!!!
Other than that the event was brilliant. Thank you very much, was a real pleasure to attend.
