Runners in 10k race take wrong route after race steward goes missing...

This story has been doing the rounds for the last day or two. The annual Bournemouth Bay Run 10k was held last Sunday and had a field of about 1200 runners. The race was on a kind of 'out and back' type of course which wasn't a problem except for the fact that the one and only race steward at the turn around point was nowhere to be seen! As a result, roughly 300 runners ended up doing an extra 3kms on top of the 10k.

Some reports say the race steward was off on a toilet break but that seems to be disputed. Either way, there was no-one there to tell the runners the correct route.

This part I like :o) ........"Andy Isaac, from Bournemouth, said the event was "mayhem" with one point where an elderly woman managed to drive on to the route and was flashing her lights at oncoming runners."

Anyway, nobody died but it kind of reminds me of some smaller incidents closer to home when runners were sent the wrong way. In most cases, it was down to inexperience of the race organisers or them putting  inexperienced people at critical points. Motto.....if it can go wrong, it will.

More about the race on the BBC website.
