Some 500 people have already signed up so it looks like it will be a record turnout.
Organised by Carrigaline & District Lions Club, supported by Carrigaline Road Runners AC and sponsored by Phelans Pharmacy and Catalyst Gym, the Great Railway Run will raise money for the building of a new Youth Centre in Carrigaline as well as other Lions Club charities.
The Great Railway Run will follow the scenic old railway line along the shores of Cork Harbour passing through Blackrock, Mahon, Rochestown, Passage, Monkstown, Raffeen and finishing in Carrigaline. The route is measured by Jones Counter and chip-timing is provided for all participants.
Carrigaline & District Lions Club President, Patrick Coughlan, said he was confident that the event would generate support from across the local community and beyond. “A purpose-built Youth Centre now nearing completion is badly needed in Carrigaline which has a very large population of young people and this event will contribute towards the building costs. The event features 5K, 10K and 25K distances to accommodate a wide range of participants. It’s going to be a well organised, enjoyable day out for everyone taking part.”
Pharmacist, Conor Phelan, whose company, Phelans Pharmacy, is the main event sponsor, said the event was a very important public health initiative. “Supporting an event that keeps people fit and healthy is in line with our policy of not only helping people to prevent illness - physical fitness is a most effective way of preventing the onset of many illnesses including diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease and cancers.”
The 25K run will start at 9:30 am from Centre Park Road in Cork city which is near the site of the original railway terminus. For a large part of the run, the route will follow the old railway line that skirts the shores of Cork Harbour. The total distance is 25 km and the race will finish in Carrigaline. Water stations will be provided en route at intervals of approximately 5 km. Shower facilities and refreshments will be available in the GAA Club after the race.
The 10K run will be held on the latter part of the same route with a separate start in Monkstown at 10:45 am.
The 5K run/walk will start at 11:30 am from Shanbally GAA Club.
The entry fees on the day are as follows...
5K..............................€17
10K..............................€3025K..............................€40
Proceeds from the event will go towards Carrigaline Lions Club

To be honest, charging 30 euros for a 10K run is way too much. If it was half this I would think there would be a much higher entry for all the distances in this race. I know its for charity, as most races are, but in comparison to The Great Island 10 and the Ballintotis 4 miler its just too much.
€30 for the 10k is the late fee. It was €17 up until the 17th of March.
The early bird was €17 and the normal rate was €20 (up until 15/4/15). The late rate is intended to discourage late entry but not exclude the possibility of entering. This helps organisers plan things like numbers of medals, amount of food, water, buses, portaloos. Looks like a nice day for it. Online registration closes at midnight. After that it is possible to register in person at Phelans midnight pharmacy, Kinsale Rd from 6-8p.m. on Saturday or one hour before the starts at the starting areas.
