New Running and Walking Trail opens in Blarney...

A new walking and running trail has just opened in Blarney near Cork City. It is located at the Blarney Driving Range which is on the approach road to Blarney once you turn off the N20 Cork/Mallow road.

If you look at the map above, you can see the approach road from the N20 bottom right which is alongside the Clogheenmilcon Sanctuary. This is on the left as you drive in towards Blarney. Go past the next T-junction and the driving range is about 200m after it on the right.

There are a choice of two loops...a shorter 1.5km loop and a longer 3km one. The surface is mostly grass which is cut short once a week. Short sections are made up of compact gravel/crushed stone.

The fee for the course is €3.

There is also a tea shop for the driving range which might be of interest to any groups wanting to make a social event out of it as well. They serve all the usual things like tea/coffee/cakes/scones, etc.

You can see more info in the brochure for the walk HERE

This short video will give you a good idea of what it is like.

This new facility might make a welcome change for some people who would like to get away from the traffic even if it's just for the occasional run.

Addendum...
A preview of the course by Mike McGrath can be seen on the Eagle AC website.

I wont be paying to go for a jog

The free amenity walk just around the corner will do for me;3 euro is a bit much when the road is free. If it was lit might get a bit of use o winter evenings.

Looking forward to trying this out. €3 is well worth it for a maintained one way system without having to navigate dog poo and other obstacles, with secure parking

I have to laugh at those giving out about the cost of this, jaysus for the great feeling you get after a good run it's worth it, sure you'd spend more on a night out without feeling any better for it after!

€3 seems will be a reasonable cost provided it's well maintained and there are no dogs off leads.

I would pay 3 euro to run somewhere if its nice, no dog poo or dogs to trip over, well maintained etc.

Not a big poster but this really got my goat. Have been running on this trail for a while now as only living a few miles away. Its a fantastic local facility. Grass is kept like a fairway, great surface to clock up miles off the roads. Unlike the farm in Curraheen(great grass venue) this trail is constantly up and down working everything a runner/walker/jogger needs to get strong. Brilliant for fartlek or tempo especially ahead of the cross country. The owner hasn't just cut the grass around his land. A LOT of work/resources went into this project and the outcome is unique. Obviously they have to start somewhere with a fee and €3 is fair. You'd expect to see a monthly or annual pass if things go well. When I hear people moaning about €3. Wonder are these the same people who complain.. "there was a very poor spread of food after the race John"!Everyone wants something for free these days.

Well said colm spot on, i for one will definetly be using it, e3 is not much for a marked, safe off road course. Some people give out about the amount of traffic on the road these days, dogs etc.. this is an ildeal venue for runners. Well done to the family involved for providing this. I can see this being a major success.

I assume you can go around more than once though for the €3? Is that like entry to the carpark or how is it paid?

Yes, you can do the loop as many times as you want. You can use whatever combination you want of the two loops to get your required distance. The €3 includes parking.

This is a lovely initiative by an enterprising family. Great to see some of our beautiful countryside being opened up to the public. There is such a thing as choice, if you want to run on the Cloghennmilcon walk for free then do, if you want to vary things and run on the new trail for €3 then do.€2 for youngsters, mind, my 16 year-old has already tried it out. I don't think there's any time limit.

I would imagine someone with a history of stress fractures might appreciate this course for say their long runs or tempos at just 3 euro.No one begging or forcing anyone to run there.Well done to the landowner I wish you well.

Used this today for the first time and I would urge those that are complaining about the €3 to just give it a go. I thought it was an excellent lay-out and I believe they have priced it just about right. No cars, no buggies, no dogs, decent scenery, peaceful environment.
There is most definitely room to develop it further but they have obviously limited the area to ensure they got it right, which they have. I spoke to the steward and they do have further plans but of course want to get a feel for the demand before they pump more money into it.
I for one thought it was €3 well spent.

Good luck to the owners, but for just € 50 a year, ie less than one euro a week, you can run twice a week on a real professional running track with a certain club whose name I wont mention !...Just saying, that is all !

Ridiculous to be charging for a walk/run around a field.

Super trail great being able to run on a track without tripping over dogs, great value for 3 euro

I am a keen runner from Australia and ran the trail on a recent trip to Blarney. I loved it! It was well maintained, undulating and interesting. 3 euros is a great price, we pay $10-15 to run on a track here! And that is usually time limited too.

I ran this yesterday and it is well worth the 3 Euro. Peaceful and quite. Great surface and plenty of rolling ups and downs for to provide a good work out. There were only a couple of runners out and no dogs. Ideal for a longer run (several laps)
