Results of the Fota Cheetah 4 mile race - Thurs 17th May 2012

The 2012 Fota Cheetah 4 mile race attracted a field of 675 runners on what was a dry and cool evening. Organised by Eagle AC in conjunction with Fota Wildlife Park, the race was sponsored by John Buckley Sports and Laya Healthcare.

The mens race was won by Chris Harrington of Leevale AC in a time of 20:48. Just four seconds behind was John Shine in 20:52. John Meade of St.Finbarr's AC was third in 21:30.

The womens race was also another closely contested affair with Annmarie Holland of the host club winning in a time of 23:48, just pipping Sinead Ní Chonchuir also of Eagle AC in 23:56. Ann Moore of Leevale AC was third in 25:58.

Just a reminder for those of you interested in the special offer on the Soleus GPS watch. Don't forget to hang on to your race number as you'll need it when you are buying it in John Buckley Sports. More info in an earlier post.

Great organisation again by Eagle. The minute silence at the start was well respected by the large amount of runners, a nice touch for the family who are greiving.
Well done to all!

Well done to Eagle AC on an excellent race.
Organisation was perfect.
These guys could organise a race in their sleep.

Looking at the results, the entrylimit was 800 runners, and only 675 finished. A 15% drop out rate seems kind of high, given that the entries were available a few weeks ago. Is this the norm?

Great run Chris Harrington great stuff me man ya

Ref no shows...The entries were only open for 2 days before it sold out. Obviously a lot of people entered without knowing that they could make it on the night.

The 'no-show' rate for the likes of the Ballycotton '10' would be a lot higher.

Enjoyed the race, very well organized, very cool to be running around the wildlife park.
Just one or 2 comments for next year maybe
- there was a guy with the same name as me, so didn't know which number was mine before I went in. not a big deal though, not sure it made any difference?
- couldn't hear what was being said just before the race, didn't even know for sure whether there was a minute silence! maybe a megaphone could have been used if it didn't upset the animals? Same for the start, just saw people started moving.
- Also, the sandwiches & cakes etc were great (very tasty! :) ) but would have been an idea maybe to have a 2nd table on the other side of the room so the queue could split and thus move twice as fast?
The pre-paid system and just collecting the numbers and everything worked really well though, thanks Eagle AC!

The Doneraile Park 5km has very similar feel to it. Maybe not the Cheetahs and ostriches but the more native species of deer and swans in the setting of Doneraile Park make it a very nice race indeed. Great race very well organised. just a pity so many entered and didn't run as I knew of quite a few runners who would run all the races but couldn't get into this one due to being sold out. quite a few mentioned that maybe runners could register and pay at the eagles 5 mile race for the runners who support all as not everyone has access to a internet. just a suggestion loved the race and well done to all concerned.

Good to see there were signs indicating starting positions for runners in different categories at the race start. I am not sure everyone saw them, but I remember some complaints after Balinotis about the narrow road and congestion, so clearly organisers are responding to comments on Cork Running ! Well done Eagles ! Great to see the new Health Insurer Laya, getting invloved in sponsoring racing along, of course, with long time sponsor John Buckley.

Eagle AC are superb at organising races. 10/10. This was a brilliant race right from the moment the stewards ushered me into the carpark and i will run it again. However 125 no shows! How do so many people enter a race that they cannot run?

I enjoyed another well organised Eagle AC race.
I think it might be a good idea to raise the time-zone signs up a bit or maybe have coloured balloons off them. As soon as it got a bit closer to the start time it was difficult to see them. Just my 2 cents.
I'll be back again next year.

I love the Cheetah Run! It is such an unusual setting and the atmosphere is fantastic. Like all Eagle events, it runs so smoothly they make it look too easy :D One little gripe though, it would have been nice if the refreshments afterwards were reserved for competitors first. By the time my group go to the room all of the sandwiches were gone and we were left with cakes and biscuits, which were very welcome, but rough on the stomach.

Re a previous comment about refreshments : How could you possibly administer giving the refreshments to the competitors first ?
Do you tell all the children that came and supported their parents that they can't have a sandwich?
Get a grip.
Luckily Eagle AC showed a bit more sense. Well done to Eagle, great organisation.

Great race, very well organised. If I were to be critical, I think they could have done with a clock at the finish, and also wasn't very clear where the finish line was, I stopped before it... maybe it was just me!

Anonymous said...

Not clear where the finish was? Did you not see the two rather large signs which said 'FINISH', or the two guys standing on the line with the timing watches?!

Anonymous said...

Funnily enough I didn't think it was clear where the finish line was either until I saw a guy with the timing watch, and that was only about 10m from the line. So, obviously more than one person was unclear about where the actual line was. It's not a big criticism but a clock would definitely have helped. When I'm panned out after running 4 miles I tend not to read signs. A clock would have ensured there was no cionfusion.

The problem with the finish line was that it was under some trees. Compared to the course, it was dark and perhaps not so obvious.
