Results of the 'Mizuno' Cork Half Marathon - Sun 14th Sept 2008 (Updated Tues 16th Sept)
The weather forecast for this one looked very bleak with a big band of rain sweeping in from the West. In the end, the conditions were pretty good....just enough rain to keep things cool but not heavy enough to get soaked and miserable. Whatever about the weather conditions, it didn't seem to deter too many people as they got a big turn out of 508, a new record I presume? Looking back on previous years, here are some of the figures 2007-448, 2006-447, 2005-340, 2004-408, 2003-269.
A few people mentioned that their official times were out by a few seconds compared to the official times below. If this is the case, leave a comment below saying what you think the difference was. Looking at the times on the clock at the finish line (see photos below), the times on the results are about 8 to 9 seconds faster. (Please note that the results have now been updated by Ballycotton Running Promotions. 8 seconds have been added to the old times. The official times are now shown below)
As for the race itself, it was my first time actually running the half marathon over the Blarney route. There is no doubt about it but that pull up to Grenagh (4.7 to 6.2 miles) is tough going. However once it is out of the way, the last 6 miles or so are nearly all flat or slighty downhill. It may not be the fastest of courses but it is a lot nicer running out there in the countryside than inside in the city.
Note that the next long race coming up is the Cork BHAA 'Cork to Cobh' 15 mile road race in 3 weeks time on the 5th of October. I'll put up some details here on this blog as we get a bit closer.

"Hi John, have to say I'm delighted with my time of 1.37.15 but by my watch, it was 1.37.21. That's over 20 minutes faster than last year. Also thank God for the weather, it was fantastic. Last year it was way too hot and I struggled with the heat. The rain didn't bother me at all. Must say I'm disappointed with the results format considering they put us down as male over 35's but no catergory in this age group. If it isn't there then put us down as male senior (something for St.Finbarrs to consider for next year). The race was well organised, plenty of stewards and water stations. All that's missing is the over 35's catergory for men which I hope St.Finbarrs will consider for next year......John Dunphy, Midleton AC.

"Thanks for all your help in getting information out before and after the 2008 Half Marathon. I note from your blog that there is a query regarding the M35 category. We did infact present prizes to the first three M35 (outside the top ten). We normally wouldn't do so but I felt the wording on our entry form this year gave the impression that it was a category in the men's race (words to the effect that "full range of prizes will be awarded in all categories" plus it included a box labelled "35" to tick). In normal circumstances this box would have a "w" attached to it to denote it as a women only category but this "w" was omitted in error this year. To avoid confusion and disapointment, we felt an onus to award the prizes to the to the M35's. I will check out the discrepancy between the timing systems with our time keeper teams and see if they can throw any light on it. "Hi John.Going by the results in both half marathons recently, which did you consider tougher? You were only seven seconds faster in the Cork one than the Waterford one but almost 60 places higher finish. Must be some difference in the standard of running between both races......Anonymous"

"In terms of difficulty, I'd kind of rate them both the same. Cork had hills between 4.75 and 6.25 but there was a lot of downhill running for 6 miles which helped a lot. I would say I found them equally tough, I put the same level of effort into each and as you say, the time difference for me was only 7 seconds. As for the Waterford race, that was a National race. There were people from all over the country at it and they were all club runners. In Cork, the runners were more 'local' and a large part of the field were non-club runners who would tend to be mainly slower.....John Desmond"

"Thank you for answering my question John, it seems that we have an awful lot of runners here in Cork that just turn up out of the blue to do these kind of races and are probarley fun runners that train just to do this type of race and disapear for months on end again,as you know alot of BHAA races have grown in numbers over the last few years but i put it down to many people just looking to do one or two particular races in the year and this is fact as i have 2 friends that attended just 3 races so far this year and said how do you keep this up race after race to me.
