Results & Photos of the Cork BHAA Army-Navy 5 mile - Sun 14th Oct 2018

After a miserable and wet Saturday, the conditions for the Cork BHAA race on Sunday morning couldn't have been better with blue skies and sunshine. A total of 180 runners turned out which is in marked contrast to the 294 who turned out when it was an evening race in 2017. That's works out as a 39% drop which is a lot.

267 runners turned out for this years Cork BHAA Army Navy 5 mile race in Ringaskiddy on Wed 10th Aug 2016. This represents a 7% increase on last years numbers which makes it the second Cork BHAA race so far this year to record an increase. As you can see from the chart, the numbers used to be up around the 320-350 mark for a number of years.

Results & Photos of the Cork BHAA Army/Navy 5 mile race...Wed 12th Aug 2015

The annual Cork BHAA Army/Navy 5 mile race was held in the Haulbowline Naval base on Wed 12th of Aug 2015. Conditions were almost ideal with a nice sunny evening and no wind.

A total of 249 runners took part which was down 25% on the 330 of 2014, perhaps a sign of just how many races are on at the moment.

One of the Golden rules when organising a road race is that there should be race stewards at every road junction. At the front and back of the field, the gaps between runners can be large and it may not be obvious to a new person which is the right way to go. That happened last night for one runner at the junction near Moog when they were out of sight of the runners in front of them.  Just by chance, there was someone there taking photos to redirect them. It's a mistake to assume everyone knows the course.

Photos of the Cork BHAA Army/Navy 5 mile race - Wed 16th Aug 2012

There was a big drop in numbers this year for the Cork BHAA Army/Navy race with with 216 turning out as opposed to 359 in 2011. That's roughly a 40% drop. I can only presume some people give it a miss due to the very windy conditions?

The winner of the mens race in this 5 mile race was Sean McGrath in a time of 26:24. Eddie O'Neil was second in 26:42 with John Meade third in 26:48.

The womens race was won by Carmel Parnell in 32:24, a full 50 seconds ahead of Geraldine O'Shea in second place in 33:14. Gillian Cotter was third in 33:20.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 Mile road race - Wed 18th Aug 2010

The results for this race can now be seen HERE.

In the meantime, we have some video clips and photos of  the race.

Video.....
The first clip shows the race after roughly half a mile.

The 2nd clip shows the race roughly 400-500 metres before the finish. It starts with Sean McGrath running past like Usain Bolt. Notice the size of the gaps for the front runners! I guess it's like this for most races except you don't really notice it because you are in the race.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 Mile Road Race - Wed 18th Aug 2010

This is the next big race coming up locally and is sure to attract a large turnout.

Please note that it will start at 7:30pm, not the usual 8pm!

Getting there....From Cork City, follow the signs for the car ferry & Ringaskiddy which is on the western side of the outer harbour. As you enter Ringaskiddy, drive straight through and when the road is about to end, take the left towards the Naval base. Once you get to the base, there will be Navy personnel directing you to the parking area. The registration is usually in the Sports Hall on the base. Just join the correct queue.......€5 for registered runners and €8 for non-registered.

Course details...The start and finish points are in the Naval base itself. The course goes back over the bridges towards Ringaskiddy and on to the 1 mile mark.....most of it reasonably level with a slight pull over the bridges. Around the 1.5 mile mark, you take a sharp left and climb 500 m up a steep hill. This is by far the hardest part of the race as the hill is long enough and steep enough to leave you out of breath if you push too hard. Then you take a right onto a quite back road above Ringakiddy and on to the 2 mile mark. This road rises and falls a bit until you join the main road again that was part of the Novartis 5k route. From here, you run downhill past the 3 mile mark into Ringaskiddy and then the last 2 miles are pretty flat until you finish back inside the Naval base. The only hill along the last mile is the bit over the bridges again.

Overall......a pretty reasonable course with just one bad hill. Probably not the fastest of courses so you might find this reflected in your time. Depending on the weather, the numbers for this race may be well over 400. So with the big numbers entering and the fact the race starts at 7:30pm, you need to keep an eye on the time.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 mile road race...Wed 19th Aug 2009
Somewhere in the region of 330 runners turned out for this 5 mile road race in the Naval base in Ringaskiddy. While the numbers seem to be down on recent BHAA races, it might be easy to assume that some people stayed because of the weather. But when you compare it to previous years, the numbers are up (2007...205, 2008...277) so it's another record turnout.

By the way, some of you will have noticed the ongoing debate about refreshments after races. It has to be said that as always, the Navy put on an excellent spread after the race last night.

Lost & Found.........Did someone lose a pair of NIKE Pegasus runners....??? See the message below...
"Somebody left their runners+socks behind after the race. I wonder if you could put a message on your Blog.
NIKE Pegasus 25US 9, UK 8, EUR 42.5, CM 27, with yellow soles.
I presume this is a Ladies size?
This was in a parking area, which you'd reach by turning right at the mini-roundabout at the entrance to the Navy Base."

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 Mile Road Race...Wed 19th Aug 2009
The first thing to note about this race is the start time........7:30pm! Most of the summer evening races in Cork start at 8pm but with the evenings closing in, they tend to start that bit earlier in August.

Getting there....Just get to Ringaskiddy, drive straight through and when the road is about to end, take the left towards the Naval base. Once you get to the base, there will be Navy personnel directing you to the parking area. The registration is usually in the Sports Hall on the base. Just join the correct queue.......€5 for registered runners and €7 for non-registered.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 Mile Road Race - Wed 20th Aug 2008
Despite the fact that we are in the middle of the holiday season, 277 runners still turned out for this 5 mile road race in the Naval base in Ringaskiddy. That's a increase of about 30% on last years figure which is a big jump.
One unusual feature of this race was that there was a dead heat for the finish with both Sean McGrath and Colin Meritt crossing the line together. What is amazing is that after 26 minutes of running, they should finish so close that the BHAA officials on hand could not decide who had won it. This was I presume, a first for a BHAA race.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Army/Navy' 5 mile road race - Wed 20th August 2008 (7:30pm)
Only 2 more evening races to go on the Cork BHAA calendar and this is the 2nd last one. The sign-on, start and finish is in the Naval base near Ringaskiddy.
Directions...Just get to Ringaskiddy, drive straight through and when the road is about to end, take the left towards the Naval base. Once you get to the base, there will be Navy personnel directing you to the parking area.
Course details...The start and finish points are in the Naval base itself. The course goes back towards Ringaskiddy and just as you are entering the town around the 1.5 mile mark, you take a sharp left and climb 500 m up a steep hill. This is by far the hardest part of the race as the hill is long enough and steep enough to leave you out of breath if you push too hard. After that hill, the course is pretty much ok. There are some small drags but nothing major. So overall, it's not a bad race.

Going on last year's entry, I'd expect the turnout to be around the 200 to 250 mark. Perhaps not as high as some other races as a lot of people seem to be holidays at this time of year. Just remember the start time, 7:30 pm, not the usual 8pm.

If you want to have a closer look at the course or need more directions, have a look at this link...http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/cork/3579396
By the way, whatever about the course, in terms of refreshments afterwards, this one is one of the best ;o)
Comments...
"Suggestion for a new competition now that the headphone poll is finished.“Spot How Many People Run This Race Wearing Headphones”. These are the people who still break the rules of the BHAA by continuing to run races wearing headphones despite numerous warnings that they are banned. These are the people who by the fact of wearing headphones are NOT insured to run these races (do they drive without insurance?) and continue to risk effecting the insurance of other runners. What happens if you are tripped etc. by an uninsured runner? They are quite entitled to wear them at other races if they wish but not at BHAA races. So I suggest a “Name and Disqualify” policy be introduced to stop these rule brakers...........James D. Kidd"
"What are the departure times for the launch from Cobh to the Naval base this evening please, I presume ok to use for the race?............. Thanks Fergal"
"Fergal....From what I can see on the Internet, you need a Naval pass to use that launch. Unless someone else has more info, I'd suggest maybe using the Cross Harbour Ferry from to Glenbrook from Carrigaloe.....John Desmond"
