Lee to Sea Active Travel Event - Sun 12th June 2022

Lee to Sea is a proposed Greenway which will stretch from the Inniscarra Dam through Cork City and on to Crosshaven. It is envisaged that this will be a hugely popular route for walkers, runners and cyclists. More details of this further down the post.

As part of the Cork Harbour Festival, the Lee to Sea Committee and the Cork Cycling Campaign are promoting an active travel event on Sunday the 12th of June 2022. This is to promote the use and awareness of the Lee to Sea concept.

While this is primarily a cycling event, walkers and runners are invited to take part as well.

Note that this is a FREE event although you can register your interest in attending HERE

The general idea is to show your support of the Lee to Sea project as well as getting in a bit of exercise.

Routes...

There will be two proposed routes... one from Ballincollig to Kennedy Park and the other one from Passage West to Kennedy Park

There will be a bit of a social gathering in Kennedy Park afterwards with some music and maybe even some refreshments! There is a local café as well so it might be no harm to bring a few Euro if you want a cuppa.

Ballincollig to Kennedy Park...

The plan is that the cyclists will start at the western end of Ballincollig Regional Park at 12 noon and cycle slowly as a group to another meeting point at Fitzgerald Park at 12:45 and the Grand Parade at 1:15pm. The plan is to reach Kennedy Park for 2pm.

It's likely that if anyone wants to walk or run it then they will probably have to organise transport of some sort before or afterwards. The route is about 13kms or 8 miles in length and should take about 90 mins to 2 hours for runners and 2 and a half hours for walkers.

There is also the option of joining in later along the route if you wanted a shorter run.

I have a suggested route to follow HERE if you're running or walking.

Passage West to Kennedy Park...

The plan is that the cyclists will start at the Fr O'Flynn Park in Passage West at 12 noon and cycle slowly as a group to another meeting point at Harty's Quay at 12:45 and Blackrock Castle at 1:15pm. The plan is to reach Kennedy Park for 2pm.

Again, it's likely that if anyone wants to walk or run it then they will probably have to organise transport of some sort before or afterwards. The route is about 13kms or 8 miles in length and should take about 90 mins to 2 hours for runners and 2 and a half hours for walkers.

Lee to Sea Greenway...

The Lee to Sea Greenway envisions a world-class walking, running, and cycling route through Cork city and around its harbour.  Starting from the River Lee’s lovely valley and rolling farmland at Inniscarra Dam, the Lee to Sea would follow the River Lee into Cork’s bustling city centre and along its historic quays, skirt the western shore of Cork’s huge natural harbour, and end at the impressive coastline near the harbour mouth.

About 200,000 people live within minutes of the Lee to Sea. It is envisaged that it will become a hugely popular Greenway for cyclists, walkers and runners as well as visiting tourists.
