An article appeared in the Irish Times today (Tues 9th June) about the costs of organising a major road race. In particular, it focused on the Docklands 5k in Dublin organised by Crusaders AC but it could just as easily apply to any large race organised in a city.
It gives a good insight into some of the costs and hurdles encountered as a lot of runners underestimate what's actually involved.
You can see it here on the Irish Times website.
Just some of the costs for the Docklands race...
a) Barrier & traffic cone hire...€3,500
b) Distribution of information leaflets to local residents...€1,200
c) Portable toilets...€400 delivery and then €55 each
d) Online registration...€1.50 per entrant
e) Timing chip & number...€1.50 per entrant

The Cork BHAA should setup a services company that race organisers could 'outsource' to.
They have everything so fine tuned I reckon they could slash the overall cost for the organiser and still make a profit.
They are doing well with the chip timing down here it costs 400E before you start plus 50euro for the clock plus then 1,50 per number and VAT on top of all that.
