Since the world class indoor facility opened in Athlone in 2013, there has been a steady number of events there allowing top Irish athletes to race on a proper track at home. Athletics Ireland have done a great job recently in getting live streams online and having them on YouTube so people can watch them later.
Last weekend on Sunday the 1st of February, the AAI Open Games were held. In the womens 800m, the Irish Indoor record holder, Ciara Everard (UCD AC) ran inside the required qualification standard of 2:03.50 for the European Athletics Indoor championships when winning with a time of 2:03.39. In the mens 1500m, Danny Mooney (Letterkenny) ran a PB of 3:42.69 to win and get inside the European qualification standard of 3:43.00 .
