"All competing athletes will be refunded the €5 post competition"

Actually you just go to a table pre competition and show your race number and get it back then.

Last thing you will remember post race.

I was a competing athlete at yesterday's cross-country race. I didn't get a refund as I exited the field. I was told it will be sent to my club though, so hopefully that will happen. Same might apply to others, so it's worth following up if you didn't get a refund. (For future races, it would be good to advise & emphasise to athletes on the way in so they remember go to the table pre-competition - otherwise lots of athletes will be out of pocket. I was told I would get my refund on the way out).
