15 year old Sophie O'Sullivan wins 800m at Morton Games

The annual Morton Games in Dublin was held on Wednesday 12th of July 2017 and there were a number of international athletes in action as well as of course some of the best of the Irish.

In one of the 800m races, 15 year old Sophie O'Sullivan won in a time of 2m 11.13s. Sophie is the daughter of Olympic Silver medalist Sonia O'Sullivan and she is the U17 Australian champion over 800m and 1500m.

Following on from another successful Cork City Sports last week, the next big athletics event in Ireland was the Morton Games in Santry, Dublin on Fri 11th of July.

1:20...Mens 400m hurdles...Thomas Barr of Ferrybank AC put in another fantastic performance to win the race in a time of 48.94 seconds. This was a new stadium record and was just four one-hundredths of a second slower than his national record which he set in June this year in Geneva.

40:45...Morton Mens Mile...John Travers of Donore Harriers went under four minutes for the mile for the first time with 3:55.44 finishing in sixth place. His 1500m split of 3:37.27 qualified him for the European Championships (3:39.30).

On the same evening, Kelly Proper (Ferrybank AC) ran 23.16 in the 200m in Rhede in Germany. That time moves her to second on the Irish all-time list and is inside the European Track and Field Championships Standard of 23.35.

Last Monday, Brian Gregan of Clonliffe Harriers qualified for the European Track and Field Championships (46.0 sec standard) when he ran a season’s best of 45.94 to finish sixth in the 400m at the Gugl Meet in Austria.

Several Irish atheltes were in action at the Welsh Athletics International in Cardiff on Tuesday. Fionnuala Britton finished sixth in 15.38.01 in the 5000m with Sarah Lavin (UCD) third in the 100m hurdles running 13.37. In the pole vault, Zoe Brown cleared 4.45m setting a new personal best.

In the mens 800m, Mark English from Donegal ran a new personal best time of 1m 45.32s beating his old time of 1m 45.77s and won the race as well! In the same race, Paul Robinson took over a full second off his old personal best time when he ran 1m 45.86s. Paul was just outside the medals when he finished 4th last weekend in the 1500m at the European U23 Athletic Championships in Finland. In terms of all time Irish performances, Mark jumps from 5th to joint 2nd fastest Irish man over the distance. Paul jumps from 13th to 6th.

Brian Gregan runs a personal best time of 45.61 seconds in the 400m

Ten run sub 4 in the mens mile!..........winner ~3:56. Ciarán Ó Lionáird finished 6th in 3:57.01....a new outdoor PB for him. Interview post race...."I didn’t run a great tactical race, I got bunched up a bit on the back straight and it was gone."
When asked about his Achilles injury........“I can feel it now to be honest, its burning a bit, I’ll get a session in now and do a bit tomorrow before heading back to London”

Later in the night, he said....."3:57 flat. An outdoor PB but obviously not where I want to be yet. Felt really smooth, just need to work on positioning + closing. got in a solid workout immediately afterward and excited to finally start working on some speed now to fine tune. Most importantly, the achilles is in one piece! It handled the stress well tonight and I'm thinking we're through the worst on that end."
