A record 151 runners took part in this year's Lisgoold 5k road race in East Cork, an increase of 34% on last year's figure of 113 (2010 = 78).

Preview of the Lisgoold 5k road race - Sun 11th Nov 2012

This 5k road race in east Cork is coming up on Sunday the 11th of November at 11am. Lisgoold is located on the R626 Midleton to Rathcormack/Fermoy road.

If you are not sure of where Lisgoold is then the easiest way to get there is via Midleton. If you are coming from Cork City then as you leave the dual carrageway (N25) and enter Midleton, you will come to a crossroads almost straight away. Take the left here and follow the relief road to the west of town. You need to follow the signposts for Fermoy. This will bring you on to the R626 road and after a few miles driving north, you will come to Lisgoold.

As you enter the village of Lisgoold, you will see the Community Centre on the right just after a crossroads. Registrations are taken here from 10am.

The Community Centre and the GAA grounds 500 metres up the road are available for changing and showers.

Course...The race is basically on an out and back course. The route follows the rough outline of the Owennacurra River so there are no big hills to contend with. For the first half of the race, you are going uphill to Ballincurrig and a little bit beyond.

Then you reach the turn around point and of course, the second half of the race is largely downhill and very fast.
The total ascent from the start line to the 2.5 km half-way point is about 50 metres. Some sections have a few short pulls while other sections are gentle gradients. Overall, nothing too serious.

The initial few hundred metres are a bit of a pull but once you get around the corner at the top of the road, the road eases off as you pass the GAA grounds. From there, you are on a twisting road and you cross over the Owenacurra River at about 700 metres.....

From there, the road continues to climb until it eases off as you reach the 1 mile mark at the entrance to Ballincurrig village...

The first mile is by far the hardest of the 3 miles so at this stage, the worst is behind you. The 1 mile mark also doubles up as the 2 mile mark so you have an approx 805 metre run out to the turn around point which is roughly here...

From here, the second half of the race is nearly all downhill and very fast. So it's back down to Ballincurrrig...

...past the 2 mile mark, back down to the bridge and back to where the race started....

This is the 3 mile mark. From here, it is 150 metres on a fast dowhill slope to the finish line outside the community hall.

Overall.......Obviously a race of two halves. The trick is to get to the turn around point at 1.5 miles without being completely out of breath. If you can have something in reserve for the second half then you should be able to exploit it to get a fast time. The course is unlikely to produces times as fast as a flat course but they shouldn't be too far out.

Results of the Lisgoold 5k...Sun 13th Nov 2011

This 5k road race in Lisgoold, east Cork attracted a field of 113 runners, well up from the 78 of last year. The mens race was won by James McCarthy of East Cork AC in a time of 15:57 while Geraldine O'Shea of St.Finbarrs AC made it 2 weeks in a row by winning the womens race in 19:35.

Results of the Lisgoold 5 km race - Sun 7th Nov 2010

There was a turnout of about 70-80 for this 5 km race in Lisgoold, East Cork. Conditions were ideal for the race with blue skies and sunshine on what was a beautiful Winter's morning.

The big talking point regarding this race however was the statement from the Cork branch of Athletics Ireland (AAI) advising club runners not to attend. Considering that around 125 took part in this race last year, you can only assume that a considerable number of people did not take part in this year's race as a result.

Whatever the positions of both parties were, there are no winners in a situation like this where runners are in effect advised to boycott an event. A lot of runners, club and non-club, will be wondering why can't two sporting organizations come to some sort of agreement? Boycotts and the like do nothing but generate bad feelings and ill will. There surely has to be a better solution.

Preview of the Lisgoold 5 km road race - Sun 7th Nov 2010

This will be the 2nd running of this event and there are a few changes this year. Last year, the race route started up a huge hill which made it very tough, especially when you consider the race is only 5 kms long. This year, they have a new flatter route. The race entry fee was supposed tobe €10 but considering that they have had problems with the t-shirts, the fee is now €7 with no T-shirt.

The race starts at 11am.

Getting there............Basically, it's a few miles north of Midleton. If you are coming from Cork City, take the N25 East and take the turn-off for Midleton. Almost immediately, you'll come accross the new road junction. Take a left here and bypass the town. You'll come out on another wide road junction. Take the left here and you are now on the R626 heading North for Lisgoold, Ballincurrig and Rathcormack. Look for the Community Centre when you get there.

Due to logistical reasons unfortunately we have had to drop the t-shirts advertised this year, The entry fee has been reduced to 7 euro to reflect this.


The new course this year is an out and back course. the race starts about 400m from the village and proceeds north to the village of Ballincurrig. The course takes a right at the crossroads in Ballincurrig and proceeds for about 1/2 mile from the village. The turn around point is here. The course will finish as per last year at the community centre.


Changing facilities and showers are available at the club gaa changing rooms. Refreshments will be served after the event and hopefully the results will be processed a bit quicker this year.

Results of the Lisgoold 5 km road race...Sun 8th Nov 2009

This new 5 km road race in Lisgoold in East Cork took place in ideal conditions with blue skies and some nice winter sunshine. By all accounts, the start was a 'bit' tough but they still got around 125 runners which for a first outing was excellent.

Race report by Donal O'Donoghue...

"The Lisgoold 5k went ahead in excellent conditions. 9-11C, Sunny, slight cool breeze. With the clear skies, you could see for miles over the East Cork countryside.Did somebody mention a hill at the start? It seemed more like a mountain! The start line was on an uphill section, before the Church, on the road signposted Leamlara.The first mile was very tough uphill. Some people even falling back to walking pace for a while, and still I couldn't catch up with them.

The road was not closed to traffic, but was exceptionally quiet. There were plenty of traffic marshalls in yellow jackets at junctions and bad bends with mile markers at each mile. The finish was a decent downhill stretch, with many flying finishes. Big Seiko clock there too. 125 ran altogether. Everybody received a bottle of Gatorade at the end, and there was all-you-could-eat in terms of sandwichs, biscuits, cream cakes, swiss-roll, teas, coffees, at the Lisgoold Community Centre.

Overall a good race, but perhaps just a little bit steep at EUR 10 for 5k"......Donal O'Donoghue

Preview of the Lisgoold 5 km road race...Sun 8th Nov (11am)

This event is organised by Lisgoold GAA club and is a brand new race! From time to time, I come accross 'runs' organised by GAA or other sports clubs and they are are nothing more than fun runs. This however is a proper race with plenty of prizes and run on an accurate course measured to the nearest micron by John Walshe of Ballycotton Running Promotions. The entry fee for the race is €10.

Lisgoold........Where is it???........I had to admit I had to get out a map to find it! It's one of those places where most people have heard of it but few people have seen ;o)

Basically, it's a few miles north of Midleton. If you are coming from Cork City, take the N25 East and take the turn-off for Midleton. Almost immediately, you'll come accross the new road junction. Take a left here and bypass the town. You'll come out on another wide road junction. Take the left here and you are now on the R626 heading North for Lisgoold, Ballincurrig and Rathcormack. Look for the Community Centre when you get there.

Course.......This is a rough outline of the course. A description of the course is given below...

"Starts in the village. Mile markers. Course starts on an uphill section, with a gradual pull for about 600 metres and then a steep incline up past the graveyard to Top Cross which lasts about 400m. Turning right at the cross roads the course is relatively level until the 1 mile mark where you can catch your breath and enjoy the scenery before the course ascends to Corbally and there is a small incline back onto the main road at Smarts Bar before turning right for Lisgoold Village. Mile 2 is just beyond the thatch houses on the right. Mile 2 to three is a gradual down hill until you reach the bridge which has an incline up to the GAA pitch. From here to the village is a gradual downhill, the 3 mile mark just at the housing estate and the finish line just before the entrance of the community centre."

Overall......with an entry fee of €10, this race would be in the upper range compared to other similiar road races locally. With a tough uphill start, it's unlikely to be a course for fast times. However, the route would seem to be on nice quiet country roads and will make a nice change from running in built up areas. They are taking entries from 10am and the race starts at 11am.
