Results of the Kilworth Camp 5 mile road race...Fri 1st May 2015

The weather conditions for this race were pretty awful. The thermometer was stuck at 7 deg C for most of the day and the rain started at about mid-day and never stopped. Perhaps the norm for say November or February but you'd expect things to be a small bit milder for the 1st of May.

Someone said the following in an e-mail....."The additional long trek from registration at Ned Roache's pub to the start line ensured that many people were soaked before the race started. There was also a strong wind blowing, and even some hailstones before the race started! Running into wind for much of first half on each of two laps. Even the photographer would not get out of his car, just opened window and took pics. It was such a contrast to the heat-wave conditions at this same event in 2013."

A total of 144 hardy souls braved the conditions in Kilworth Camp, a big drop of 32% on the 212 of last year.

Results of the Kilworth Camp 5 mile road race...Fri 9th May 2014

The first race of the Ballyhoura Cork Series was held in Kilworth Camp on Friday the 9th of May. Despite the damp conditions, a total of 212 people took part which is up 36% on last year. The race was organised by local club Grange Fermoy AC.

Notice...Kilworth Army Camp 5 mile road race - Fri 9th May 2014

This 5 mile road race in Kilworth Army Camp is coming up in NE Cork on Friday, the 9th of May 2014 at 7:30pm. This is located between the towns of Mitchelstown and Fermoy. This is also the first race of six in the Ballyhoura Cork Race Series.

Organised by Grange Fermoy AC, the race takes place inside the Army grounds on private roads. The race starts at 7:30pm.

Directions......The army camp is just off the old road from Fermoy to Mitchelstown in North-East Cork and is very easy to access from the M8 motorway...take exits 13 or 14 as shown on the map above. Sign on for this race this year is at Ned Roches Pub which is situated near the top of the hill on the old main Cork - Dublin road.

More info from the organisers...Grange Fermoy AC...The first race in the Ballyhoura starts off on Friday the 9th of May 2014. Registration will take place in Ned Roaches pub which is 400 meters from Gloccamora pub on the old Fermoy, Mitchelstown road. The race itself is started a half mile from the pub and is 5 miles, which is a two loop course of Kilworth hill contrary to its name it is pretty flat. The course record for men is 24.41 and the ladies is 29.27 If you can beat these times there is a special prize, and there is a prize fund of €2000 on the night.

Travelling from Mitchelstown take the old Fermoy road up by Gloccamora Turn right just after the pub and 400 meters on the left is Ned Roaches pub and race head quarters. Coming from Fermoy take the road out by Moorpark and when you pass Corbett Court you take the left just before Gloccamora and Ned Roaches pub is 400 meters down on the right.

Please arrive as early as possible.

The Kilworth Camp 5 mile road race was held on Friday, the 12th of July 2013, the 3rd race of 7 in the ongoing Ballyhoura Cork Series. Organised by Grange-Fermoy AC, the race attracted a field of 156 runners on what has been a very busy week for races in Cork.

Preview of the Kilworth Camp 5 mile road race - Fri 13th July 2012

This 5 mile road race in Kilworth army camp is coming up on Friday, the 13th of July 2012 at 8pm. This is the 6th race in the ongoing Ballyhoura Active Series.

The army camp is just off the old road from Fermoy to Mitchelstown in North-East Cork and is very easy to access from the M8 motorway.

Organised by Grange Fermoy AC, the race takes place inside the Army grounds on private roads. The race starts at 8pm.

Getting there......Sign on for this race is at the Glocca Maura Inn which is situated at the top of the hill on the old main Cork - Dublin road. If you are coming out from the Cork city, then the easiest way is to leave the M8 motorway just after Fermoy and take the old road. If you see any signs for Corbett Court then follow those....the Glocca Maura Inn is about 2 kms up the road from there.

Entries......The entry fee is €10.

Course.......The race is inside the Army grounds about 1 km or so from the sign on point so you have a short jog to get to the start point. Just run down the road for 300 metres or so and take the small little road to the left and that will take you down to the start line.

Essentially, the course is roughly in the shape of a triangle and consists of 2 loops. See map up top. The roads are like narrow country roads and there will be little or no traffic.
You start at the north-west corner and you run south east...slightly uphill at first and then gradually downhill...a fast 1st mile.

Just after  the turn, you are at the lowest point of the course and you are approx 30 metres or 100 feet below the highest point which is roughly at 2.3 miles. That might sound a lot but that is spaced out over roughly 1.2 miles......so in essence for the whole race, you have 2 long downhill sections and 2 long uphill sections.

Overall.......it's a reasonable course with no steep hills. There are some really nice views from the top out to the west over the Blackwater valley with the Ballyhoura Mountains and the Galtee Mountains to the North.........but perhaps you should leave that for the warm down ;o)

A lovely spot for a race on quiet roads with no traffic.

Results of the Kilworth Camp 5 mile road race - Sun 10th July 2011

A total of 113 runners turned out for this new race in Kilworth Camp between Fermoy and Mitchelstown in NE Cork. This was the 4th race of 8 in the Ballyhoura Active series.

The winner of the mens race was Eric Meade of East Cork AC in a time of 29:24. In 2nd place, Johnny O'Sullivan ran 29:29 while Don Lehane of Eagle AC took 3rd place in 29:36.

In the womens race, the winner was Sinead O'Connor of Leevale AC in a time of 32:15. Maura Regan of Eagle AC finished 2nd in 33:22 while Karen Kenny of Grange Fermoy AC finished 3rd in 34:46.

The 5th race in the Ballyhoura Active series is the GR8 KM in Mitchelstown on Friday, the 5th of August.

This is the 4th race of 8 on the Ballyhoura Active road race series and a brand new event on the Cork  calendar. Organised by Grange Fermoy AC, the race takes place inside the Army grounds on private roads. The race starts at 12 noon.

Getting there......Sign on for this race is at the Glocca Maura Inn which is situated at the top of the hill on the old main Cork - Dublin road. If you are coming out from the Cork city, then the easiest way is to leave the M8 motorway just after Fermoy and take the old road. If you see any signs for Corbett Court then follow those....the Glocca Maura Inn is about 2 kms up the road from there.
