Results & Photos of the Cork BHAA HSE 5k in Tramore Valley Park - Sun 3rd Nov 2019

Early on this morning, the weather looked like it might be pretty grim for this race with persistent rain and drizzle. Perhaps it might have deterred a few from traveling but at about 10am, the rain stopped and the race at 11am was held in dry fine conditions.

I haven't been in the park for a few months but the council have done a fine job in marking out the km marks with permanent signs. It seems likely that more 5k race will be held there in the future.

One notable feature of this race can be seen in the photo above. Nearly all of the front runners were young men and this contrasts to the usual race which is usually men in their 30's and 40's.

A record 375 runners took part and as the chart shows below, it is in marked contrast to just a few years ago.

Notice: Cork BHAA HSE 5k in Tramore Valley Park in Cork City - Sun 3rd Nov 2019

The Cork BHAA are holding the HSE Cork Kerry Community Healthcare 5k in Tramore Valley Park in Cork City on Sunday the 3rd of November 2019.

As always, you enter on the morning of the race and it's €5 for BHAA registered runners and €10 for non-reg. Registration is in the park from 9.30am with the race starting at 11am.

The annual Cork BHAA HSE 5k road race was held on Sunday the 12th of November with 228 runners taking part. As can be seen from the chart above, it's up somewhat on the two previous years. Perhaps the central venue in Mahon and the sunny weather made a difference?

Results & photos of the Cork BHAA HSE 4 mile road race...Sun 1st Nov 2015

The annual Cork BHAA HSE 4 mile road race was held on Sunday the 1st of November on the Marina/Centre Park Rd circuit. There was however a big drop in numbers this year with 186 taking part. For most road races, that might be a good number but you'd expect a bigger turnout for a BHAA race.

 As you can see from the chart about, it's the lowest number in about a decade.

The question is why? A drop of 5-10% is one thing but a drop of 29% is something else. The weather was overcast but fine for a road race. The county Masters Cross Country was on the same day so perhaps that had an impact but then again, last year it clashed with the Senior Cross Country. Is the new parkrun in the city having on impact on race numbers? I'm not sure what the reason is but it's still a suprise.

Results of the Cork BHAA HSE 4 mile road race...Sun 2nd Nov 2014

After a miserable few days, the weather cleared nicely on Sunday morning for the Cork BHAA HSE 4 mile road race near Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork City. As you can see from the photo above, there were plenty of 'water features' out long the course.

Notice...Lee Fields 4 mile race - Sun 26th Oct 2014

This is a brand new race on the calendar...the Lee Fields 4 mile on Sunday the 26th of October 2014.

The 4 mile route takes in the Carrigrohane Straight...Inchigaggin Lace...Model Farm Rd...Dennehy's Cross...Victoria Cross. You can see a preview of the course HERE

You can pre-enter online HERE and there is a free technical top for the first 200 entrants. You can also enter on the morning of the race but obviously the tech tops might be gone at that stage.

As you can see in the flyer above, the race HQ is at the Kingsley Hotel.

The race is part of the HSE Cork Local Drug & Alcohol Task Force initiative to encourage people to take part in Sunday morning activities. This is their message...The Cork Local Drugs Task Force has responsibility for  developing a strategic, locally based response to  substance misuse  in Cork. Today, the Cork Local Drugs Task Force funds twenty five projects. These projects are spread across local communities and voluntary agencies throughout Cork city to support individuals affected by substance misuse. All Drug Task Forces now have the  responsibility  of Alcohol  added to their brief. We in the Cork Local Drug & Alcohol Task Force are highlighting this addition of alcohol by creating an event to support the “Hello Sunday Morning” initiative.

“Hello Sunday Morning” encourages individuals to look at changing the pattern of their drinking by taking a break from alcohol & incentivising that break with goals e.g taking up running/exercise – further details www.hellosundaymorning.org

We are also aiming to  highlight to the general public all the services available across cork city regarding substance misuse as part of our drug & alcohol awareness month (poster attached)

A total of 245 turned out for this BHAA race in Cork City, down 17% from last year. It also clashed with the Cork AAI Senior Cross Country Championships which might explain the drop in numbers.

Results of the Cork BHAA HSE 4 mile road race...Sun 4th Nov 2012

HSE Race celebrates 30 years...The HSE four-mile road race last Sunday was the 30th promotion of the event which started off as Our Lady’s Hospital 6½ mile race around the Lee Road-Straight Road and later became known as the Southern Health Board event. A number from the original race in November 1983 (pictured below) took part on Sunday, including Michael Dunne and race founder Jim Murray who finished first and second in the M65 category.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'HSE' 4 Mile Road Race...2nd Nov 2008

There was a slight increase in numbers for this 4 mile race in Cork City with 280 runners taking part. The mens race was won by Mark Hanrahan in a time of 18:50, knocking 17 seconds off of his already-impressive course record. Craig Murphy from Togher second in 19:36.
The ladies race was won by Rhona Lynch in a time of 23:24, Louise Cavanagh came second and Mary Sweeney came third, just 6 days after running the Dublin City Marathon in a time of 3:08!!

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'HSE' 4 mile Road Race - Sun 2nd Nov (11:00am)

Now that the Dublin Marathon is behind us, it's time to take a look at what is happening locally. There are now only 3 BHAA races left in the 2008 calendar, all of them 4 milers. The 3rd last one takes place next Sunday, the 2nd of November on the Marina in Cork City. The registration is at the Lee Rowing Club clubhouse which is located just next to the Pairc Ui Chaoimh GAA stadium. There are plenty of parking spaces available here at the stadium, outside the rowing club and down along the cul-de-sac by the waterfront (Just where the 4 is marked on the map).

They got about 270 at this last year so I would expect something similiar if not closer to 300 this year. The race starts at 11am so it is worth getting there a bit early to avoid the backlog at the sign-on.

Course...They hold a number of 5km and 4m races in this area using different routes. The route shown above is the usual one for the HSE race. You can get a better look at the course at this LINK
So, on to the description. The course is almost dead flat and there are no climbs. The race basically starts on the Marina near the clubhouse, takes in 2 laps of the Centre Park Road and Monaghan Road, and then finishes near the Marina again. You can expect your times to be pretty fast on this course. They only thing that you have to be careful about is the road surface. There are a lot of heavy goods vehicles using these roads and the road surface can be uneven in spots. It is not a big issue but just keep it in mind if you are running close behind someone and your view forward is obstructed.

Overall, this is a nice fast course. The roads are quiet at this time on a Sunday morning and it is one of the few places where you can hold a road race in Cork City without traffic being an issue. There are refreshments available after the race in the clubhouse.
