Guest Post: Summer Sunshine ...by Pat Walsh

 ** Summer Sunshine **

Depending on, where in Ireland you are, sunshine has made a few brief appearances this year. I’m a bit like that myself.

All is good and I am only posting to say thanks to the many people who have messaged to enquire and say lovely things. I do appreciate that, it means a lot to me.

I just needed a break from it all and was lacking the inspiration to post and inspire. If it isn’t there, then is no point in posting rubbish for the sake of it. I do read what I write and it won’t make an Olympic athlete out of anyone. I'm still running and moving.

Like a heatwave in late summer I could come again and shine but for the moment I am happy to plod away and make a brief appearance here and there like the sun for Summer 2024.

Even posing for a pic in front of Holy Mary with 2 PROPER runners Ken and Paul last Thursday in Churchtown South isn't enough... !! I Joke 😂😍

Keep the faith
Keep running
Keep moving

Second public consultation for Greenway in the Skibbereen area - July 2024

There are a number of Greenway projects planned for County Cork and one of these is in West Cork taking in the towns of Skibbereen, Drimoleague, Baltimore & Schull.

In February of 2024, an initial public consultation was carried out and the project area is shown below.

This was more about getting feedback on the proposed Greenway project without going into too much detail about the specific route.

Here are some of the key points from the first public survey...

A. Distances - Skibbereen to Baltimore (13km) - Skibbereen to Schull (23km) - Skibbereen to Drimoleague (13km)

B. There were 644 submissions of which 63% were women.

C. Feedback was very positive and 96% expressed an interest in using the Greenway.

D. Road safety and traffic levels was mentioned as a reason for using a Greenway in about 50% of the submissions.

E. A Greenway from Skibbereen to Schull and Baltimore are the most popular options with fewer choosing the link to Drimoleague.

The second public consultation is open until Friday 26th of July 2024.

The route choices have now been narrowed down as can be seen from the map below.

If you are interested in making a submission or want to look at the documents for the project then go to https://wcgskibbereen.ie/publications/

These Greenway projects tend to move at a glacial pace but the end result show be safer areas to run and train. This is especially true in or near towns where a lot of roads are like rat runs for cars and can be unsafe.

I had a look at satellite images for the area concerned and the old railway route is now largely gone. It's not like the case in East Cork where the track of the old railway line from Midleton to Youghal was largely intact.

It's very likely all of these Greenway projects will link up and it will hopefully be possible to go from Cork City to Schull without using a public road.

A full timeline for the Skibbereen project is shown below...

Guest Post: IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS - 1st Jan to 21st Jul 2024 ...by John Walshe

IRISH 10-MILE RANKINGS 2024 - 1st January to the 21st of July 2024 ...by John Walshe

The following is a half-year ranking list over the popular 10-mile distance for men (under 55:00) and women (under 65:00).

This list, from January to July 21st, shows the time (gun), name/club/category, the race and finishing position, along with the date. Where an athlete appears more than once, just the surname is used after the initial listing.

At the end of the year we’ll do a more comprehensive statistically break-down. While the women’s standard so far is on a par with previous years, one alarming statistic is that just one man – Keelan Kilrehill last Sunday – has broken 50 minutes this year.

Any additions or corrections are welcome and can be made on the comments section wherever this list appears and will be included in the next updated edition published in the autumn.

Cork is the largest half-marathon in Ireland for the first half of 2024...

The 2024 Cork City Half-Marathon was the largest half-marathon in Ireland for the first six months of the year.

The chart above shows the half-marathons with over 1000 finishers and Cork is in first place with 3500. The Great Limerick Run Half-Marathon is just behind with 3277 finishers.

The only other half-marathons in Munster that broke the 1000 mark are the Waterford Viking Half-Marathon with 1224 finishers and the Run Killarney Half-Marathon with 1151 finishers.

There were at least 53 half-marathons in Ireland for the first half of 2024 and the distribution is shown above. As can be seen, most have reasonably small numbers with 30 of the 53 with fewer than 300 finishers. 15 of those had less than 120 finishers which would have meant a lot of big gaps between the runners.

Cork V Limerick... I thought it was a little surprising how relatively close the Limerick numbers were to Cork considering that the population for Cork City is over twice that of Limerick city.

The chart above shows the numbers for the Cork and Limerick half-marathons since 2013.

From 2013 to 2015, the numbers for both events were pretty similar despite the difference in population. After 2016, Cork began to pull away as the number of finishers grew.

It was only in 2024 that Limerick has begun to close the gap again.

The second half of 2024... One of the most important and biggest running events in Ireland is of course the Dublin marathon and many people use a half-marathon race as part of the build up to it.

There are plenty more big half-marathons coming down the line and it'll be interesting to see how Cork and Limerick fare by comparison by the end of the year.
