Results of the Bay Run Half-Marathon & 10k - Sun 19th May 2019

Another race from the weekend....I almost forgot about this one! :o)

The annual Bay Run Half-Marathon in Bantry was on this year on Sunday the 19th of May 2019. As can be seen from the chart above, this was one of the main half-marathons on the calendar a few years ago when it got well over a thousand runners.

Since 2011, the numbers have been in decline and this year was the lowest ever dropping below 400 for the first time between the two races.

Great event.
Beautiful scenery, well organised. Buses to starting point, bag drop bus. Generous goodie bag and plenty food after. It's a shame to see the decline in numbers. I can't understand why. Possibly the clash of weekend with the Rosscarbery half marathon and 10k

I have run the half and was very annoyed with the plastic drinking cups. It is really impossible to run and drink out of a cup. Also not everywhere bins for the cups so these were blown around. They were picking litter a day after, I can imagine there are still quit a few plastic cups out in the open. Also selling shirts which are dark grey while running outside on the roads instead of a high vision colour is something I can't understand. As said that respect for the many volunteers as without them such events can never happen.

A challenging but enjoyable half marathon and there was great support throughout. Lovely scenic course. Did anyone else notice that the mile markers were in completely the wrong places though? I had 9.3 miles done on my watch when I passed the 10 mile mark for example. One other small point was the water, it's just not possible to drink out of plastic cups when running and small bottles are much better but I understand there would be a cost aspect to this also.

Enjoyable 10k. Thanks to organisers and volunteers.

I think the registration fee was high enough to supply small bottles, but to be fair the refreshments afterwards was very good.

It is actually possible now to distribute water to runners without the use of plastic containers. The London Marathon handed out a few hundred thousand of these seaweed based 'pods' containing a sports drink. They are both edible and biodegradeable ... NOTPLA is the name of the company that provided the alternative to plastic cups/bottles.

I agree totally re the plastic cups, also the mile markers were completely off. Overall, enjoyed the run. Thanks to the volunteers for making it happen, but maybe look at a few improvements as suggested.
