IAAF announce high qualification standards for the 2020 Olympics

The IAAF have recently announced the qualification standards for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Based on this, it seems to suggest that most Irish athletes will fail to qualify.

An athlete can qualify for the 2020 Olympics in one of two ways: Achieve the entry standard OR  qualify by their IAAF world ranking position.

According to the IAAF....“The process is designed to achieve about 50% of the target numbers for each event through entry standards and the remaining 50% through the IAAF world ranking system.”

The qualification periods are from January 1, 2019, to May 31, 2020, for the marathon and 50km race walk; from January 1, 2019, to June 29, 2020, for the 10,000m, 20km race walk and combined events; and from May 1, 2019, to June 29, 2020, for all other events.

Very high standard
The most obvious thing about the standards is just how tough they are in comparison to those for the Olympics in Rio.

For example, the qualification standard for Rio for the women's 3000m Steeplechase was 9m 45s. Kerry O'Flaherty, Michelle Finn and Sara Treacy ran 9:42 to 9:44 at a race in Letterkenny in July 2015 to qualify. The new standard is 9m 30s.

The new qualifying times for Tokyo for the women in the marathon is 2h 29m 30s. The standard for Rio was 2h 42m.

The time for the marathon men has gone from 2h 17m down to 2h 11m 30s.

Unless someone qualifies through the ranking system, it seems likely that there will be a very small Irish athletics team in Tokyo.

This is a real pity. Is this the final ruling? Not sure if we will have any athletes in the marathon now. It will affect lots of small countries, essentially excluding them from the Olympics.

Finnola Britton will be our only hope now in the marathon

Can't see any Irish athlete getting any of those times, bar maybe English in men's 800.Sinead Diver class act in Womens marathon, but because Athletics Ireland did'nt pick her she now runs for Australia!

Arent you forgetting f. Britton, tomas Barr and ciara m.

No, not forgettin those 3,F.Britton pb around 2.31 i think, 400m hurdles time is around Barrs pb and Magean will have to have a great race to get the time. I hope they all get the times, just saying will be very tough.

She has gotten that pb on a hard course and tough conditions. If she went to Berlin she'd get that time easily

Don't think 2.29 will be got "easily" as you say; think Sinead Diver only Irish women to go sub 2.30 recently, although i stand to be corrected

She would only be 90 seconds off it. 3.5 seconds a mile off only. At the end of the day she is our only hope of getting someone into the Olympic marathon. Diver is considered Australia in running terms because she ran those times as an Australian citizen

She probably is only 1 capable of maybe getting near the time. Sinead Diver born in Ireland so she is Irish to me, pity she won't be wearing green of Ireland instead of green of Australia
