Mallow 10 mile road race cancelled due to serious road accident...

The Mallow 10 mile road race had to be cancelled today due to a very serious traffic accident on the N20 Cork-Limerick road.

The race started at about 12:30pm in the town centre and proceeded on the race route shown below. The multiple vehicle accident happened just a few minutes before the lead car and runners reached the site of the accident at about 2.8 miles. Such was the scale of the accident that the race was cancelled immediately.

Some of the first medical staff to reach the scene were actually runners in the race themselves.

There has been one fatality as a result of the accident which involved a truck, a vehicle towing a horse box and other vehicles.

Some people may be wondering about a rescheduled race but that is something for the future. Obviously peoples thoughts are with the truck driver and his family at this time.

Mallow AC have released the following statement.....Due to unforeseen circumstances today's Mallow 10 was cancelled just past the 2 mile mark. At this time we would ask runners to bear with us until we have a chance to review the situation....Mallow AC

For us the runners there will be other days. Putting things into perspective, for that mans poor family there will not. May he rest in peace. To Mallow AC, considering the rapid development of the situation, well done. Just proves how well organised they are.

A very sad day to what started out as a great day. Our thoughts are with the truck driver and his family. My friend was the car driver with the horse box. She and her family escaped with cuts and bruises. The airbags saved them. Their horse was killed out right. As other poster said there will be other days for us runners and hopefully mallow ac may run the race again. Well done to the stewards for reacting quickly to a situation they had no control over .lead car and runners could have been caught up in the accident if it had started earlier.hopefully we may never have a situation like this again.

To see how quick Mallow ac sprung into action after this accident today was amazing. The mood back in the hall was sombre but it put things into perspective for us all. If it's rescheduled I for one will be definitely back to support the good people who did all they could today for us athletes and the injured people.

A very sad day at the 10 Miler in Mallow yesterday, Started off great as was really getting into the the 10 mile run when we heard people shouting "turn back". Little did we expect an accident to happen. RIP for the people who died and those who were injured and also to the poor horse that was involved. You might let us know when this race will be rescheduled for.

RIP to that poor man and I hope the injured have a speedy recovery. Kudos to Mallow AC for their swift reaction and to their stewards who helped to close off roads and re-direct traffic for hours afterwards. Well done also to the likes of Alan O'Shea, Alex O'Shea and Kieran Minihane amongst others (didn't recognise one or two) who were first at the scene and went straight into 'work mode' and to the first aid crews etc that were working on the race and went straight to the scene.

Thanks to all involved in Mallow AC for handling the situation after the accident so well, we should think of the people involved and the family of the deceased.

To the medics that were in the road race and who came to our aid on the day .. Thank you so much. You were all brilliant. Words can't convey how appreciative we are. We were in the car pulling the horse box. Thank you for helping us. Jackie
