Glen River 5k parkrun cancelled - Sat 21st Oct 2023

Due to extensive flooding damage, the Glen River 5k parkrun on Sat 21st Oct 2023 has been cancelled.

Update 20th Oct: Mallow Castle and Ballincollig cancelled as well.

As you can seen from the photo above, the deluge of water on the 18th and 19th of October not only flooded large sections of the Glen River park but some of the paths were badly damaged.

Cork City Council are working on repairing the path but it's not going to be ready by Saturday.

Note that other parkruns may also be cancelled on Saturday so be sure to check before traveling.

The image above shows the water levels of the Glen River for the last five weeks. The flooding on the 19th of Oct was at records levels.

Even in dry weather, some parts of the 5k route are not that far above the level of the small lake and the photo above shows the route underwater.

2022 Crosshaven 5k & 10k Cancelled

The Crosshaven 5k & 10k was due to take place on Sunday the 6th of March 2022. The organisers have informed me that they have to cancel it due to Covid concerns.

"Regrettably we have taken the difficult decision to postpone our Crosshaven Road Races which were scheduled for Sunday 6th March 2022.

We have waited until the very last moment to take this decision. Many races will take place in the coming weeks, but considering the impact COVID-19 is having in our locality at present, it would be very insensitive to press ahead and organise such a large event which is centred in the village.

We felt very privileged to be one of the very last events to complete a day’s races in March 2020 and we hope this message finds you safe and well.

We want to wish all other race organisers the very best for 2022 and we hope to see everyone again in 2023."

Mallow 10 mile road race cancelled due to serious road accident...

The Mallow 10 mile road race had to be cancelled today due to a very serious traffic accident on the N20 Cork-Limerick road.

The race started at about 12:30pm in the town centre and proceeded on the race route shown below. The multiple vehicle accident happened just a few minutes before the lead car and runners reached the site of the accident at about 2.8 miles. Such was the scale of the accident that the race was cancelled immediately.

Some of the first medical staff to reach the scene were actually runners in the race themselves.

There has been one fatality as a result of the accident which involved a truck, a vehicle towing a horse box and other vehicles.

Some people may be wondering about a rescheduled race but that is something for the future. Obviously peoples thoughts are with the truck driver and his family at this time.

Mallow AC have released the following statement.....Due to unforeseen circumstances today's Mallow 10 was cancelled just past the 2 mile mark. At this time we would ask runners to bear with us until we have a chance to review the situation....Mallow AC

Parkrun in Cork City on Sat 30th Jan 2016 cancelled due to ongoing large numbers...

It has just been announced that the Cork City Council are withdrawing permission for the weekly 5km parkrun at the Tramore Valley Park in Cork City.

From the parkrun organisers..... Unfortunately we have been informed by Cork City Council that they are withdrawing permission for Parkrun to take place at Tramore Valley next Saturday, January 30th due to the difficulties arising from increased traffic volumes and associated parking issues last Saturday. 

Last weekend we had a record of 520 runners completing the two lap course, up from 339 the previous week. There is only room for 240 carparking spaces at Tramore Valley and while the Black Ash Park and Ride is just across the road, there is no pedestrian crossing connecting the two.The numbers taking part have risen exponentially and with the OT promotion of Parkrun there were fears that even larger numbers would be converging over the next few weeks. 

The volunteers are gutted and very disappointed with the announcement as Tramore Valley Park has been a World Leader for parkrun registrations over the last few weeks and have almost 3000 registered runners. While permission has been withdrawn Cork city council have left the door open to a review at an early stage when plans at how to make the event safe to take place can be implemented.

Obviously this isn't good news for the regular attendees at the weekly parkrun. Since it started at the end of September 2015, it has attracted 1410 people.

As the map shows below, there are 940 parking spaces in the Black Ash Park & Ride facility which is only across the road from the entrance to the Tramore Valley Park. At 9:30am on a Saturday morning, the place is practically empty yet there is no public access from there to the Tramore Valley Park at the other side of the South Ring Road.

Obviously the extra publicity from the ongoing Operation Transformation programme pushed the numbers to records level but the question has to be asked of the City Council.......What's the point of having a public park if people can't use it? If they can't handle 500 runners then how can they can't hold any sort of public event there.

We'll have to wait and see if a solution is found.

New York Marathon cancelled...!!

Sunday's New York City Marathon has been called off in the aftermath of the super storm Sandy, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced. In a statement, the mayor said....."We would not want a cloud to hang over the race or its participants, and so we have decided to cancel it. While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division. We cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event - even one as meaningful as this - to distract attention away from all the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track."

Plans to press ahead with the race had prompted uproar from politicians in cyclone-ravaged parts of the city. It was not immediately clear if the race would be rescheduled for another date.

Elected officials representing Staten Island were among the harshest critics of Mayor Bloomberg's earlier statements that the race would go ahead. US Representative Michael Grimm said....."We're still pulling bodies out of the water and the mayor is worried about marathon runners and returning to life as normal. The Verrazano Bridge should be used for getting fuel and food in to Staten Island, not getting runners out. Police resources would be best allocated to prevent looting and in rescue and recovery operations."
