Great race , great evening but please please do something about the people wearing headphones. So annoying. I like to listen to music sometimes too but for races I leave the music at home.

Yeah, echoing the above. It's only getting worse as the races go on this year. At least the BHAA fella with the mega phone was trying to shame people at the finish line, but something more has to be done. A genuine danger to other runners and themselves.

Anonymous said...

I did notice a lot more people with them on than usual, but it didn't seem to be causing any bother - they were as aware of their surroundings as anyone I thought so is it that big a deal really?

Anyway great evening, enjoyed it - fair play to all the organisers and the ever appreciated onlookers cheering everyone on, it definitely gives me a boost to keep going, thanks to all.

Another year..another great race.well done to all involved.i think the comments about the headphones are a bit ridiculous but its obviously something that bothers the "serious" runners. People still can hear and sense what's going on so give them a break-it's not a serious safety issue.

Anonymous said...

Not quite sure how someone waring headphones is a danger to other runners but it's probably best to leave them at home for races......anyway, a great event, well done to all concerned!!

For those who can't understand it:
1. Earphones are NOT allowed at BHAA races. There's notices at the desks, and people are told before the race. It's a rule, like it or not.
2. You can't hear marshalls if you're listening to music.
3. You've obviously never been cut off by a runner more concerned with adjusting their volume or song instead of concentrating on running in a straight line.

I'm not a 'serious' runner, but I don't want to have to spend my time running around people who aren't paying full attention.

Steve, I echo your sentiments, I'm not a 'serious'sub 20 min runner either but its frustrating when people aren't aware of their surroundings and cut people off. you don't need them anyways much better funny to chat to the people around you, I ran with and engaged with a lovely couple yesterday evening and enjoyed it, wouldn't have happened if I had had my headphones in.
but as an aside, thanks to those who marshalled, supported and organized the race... hats off to you guys...

Great race, my only issue is I don't understand what the point of chip timing is if they only put up the time I went through the barrier which is from the time the gun went off, yet I didn't cross the start line for about 30 or 40 seconds after???? Can anybody clarify about this???

Regarding the headphones, aside from the safety issue which does exist, people know that they are not allowed to wear them but still do so. They are deliberately going against the rules, and to me that's just bad manners. It's actually the blatant bad manners and lack of respect that irritates me more than the safety issue.

I came across a plonker in Dublin marathon last year running across in front of a wheelchair user on a down slope, with a dozen fellas shouting at him to get out the way, oblivious to his surroundings due to the head phones. Lucky boy he wasn't knocked over but he'd have earned it!

The chip timing thing is interesting alright. A couple of runners said to me they couldn't understand the point of a finishing mat as there wasn't one at the start. Have to agree. As for the person who said they were chatting to people I presume they meant before the race and not during otherwise you weren't going fast enough :-)

Have to agree with the chip timing comment; also took me about 20 seconds to cross the start line but my official time was the one on the clock at the finish line. Precision timing website has the same time which seems strange. Very enjoyable evening all the same, thanks to all

Re. Headphone wearers. 1. It is against the rules. 2. They normally have the volume up so loud they can't hear stewards.

At the pfizer bhaa run I saw a girl running with headphones and from mile 3-4.5ish where you run along by the water she chose to run at the right hand side to shorten her run. As a result she caused traffic chaos as the road was too narrow for two lanes of traffic with runners at both sides. The ambulance volunteers then came along to try to tell her to run on the left hand side like everybody else and despite numerous attempts she couldn't hear them. They had no choice then but to go slowly along with the traffic until they could pull in and wait for her to come along for them alert her to the mayhem she was causing. When this eventually happened she was initially narky with the ambulance volunteers for interrupting her run and her reaction also made it obvious that she had no idea as to the chaos she had created. Nobody got injured because of her but she created ill will towards the race and runners by the car drivers and because of so much traffic accumulating it wasn't so nice for other runners running amongst the cars. Also I don't think it was what the ambulance is brought to races to do.

To make a long story short headphones do cause a problem and are an inconvenience to other runners and organisers.

As has been said already though, the fact that they are against the rules should be reason enough.

Race times for BHAA are always gun to finish, so it doesn't really matter (other than for your own knowledge) how 'late' you started.

I imagine, because of the lapped nature of the course that a starting mat would be a nightmare anyway.

The real benefit of the mat is at the end, in previous years people couldn't get over the finish line at the end, such were the queues from finishers.

Ref Chip Timing...
The primary purpose of chip timing in this instance is to generate a set of results for the organisers. The problem with having roughly 1000 runners in a 5k race is that there are too many people finishing in a short space of time. Before chip timing was introduced, the finish line chutes filled up and runners had to queue before reaching the finish line.
The introduction of chip timing has now eliminated this problem and all runners have to do is cross the finish line.

Gerard said...

I was in the last marina race before they introduced chip timing and as John said there were queues before some runners actually got to the finish line itself.
Maybe chips have some disadvantages occasionally, but they are clearly an improvement.

Anonymous said...

I understand that John but if there is no timing mat at the start what is the point?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous: you obviously don't understand: all BHAA races are gun to finish times. The results are the same as having no chip timing but without the queues and manual processing of 1000 names numbers and times.

Could i make a suggestion regarding earphones which might sound draconian, so its just a suggestion - in any sport, if you break the rules, you are liable for punishment. What about if people who deliberately wear earphones are noted at the finish line, and a DQ is added next to their name, rather than an official time.
Just a suggestion - something HAS to be done about it at this stage. Its getting ridiculous the amount of runners wearing them in races.

Anonymous said...

Well said about rules being rules and all that. If earphones are not allowed then maybe an auto DQ is an option. However I think the examples above are more down to people's stupidity rather than the fact they were wearing earphones? Just saying!

Brian said...

Whilst I agree that reason for the chip timing is to prevent chutes filling up as in previous years, I seem to remember the guy anounce prior to the start that they was no need for pushing towards the front as runners' times would only start upon crossing the start line (or something to that effect?)

Agree with Johnny G on the headphones issue. If it is in the rules, then not abiding should automatically result in a DQ instead of a finishing time.

Great race though, credit to all involved in organising it.

Anonymous said...

Regarding the last comment from Brian - the guy at the start just made a point of saying 3 o 4 times there was no starting mat so the chip is a gun time only. Don't think he made any reference to pushing to the front etc.
Also BHAA is always gun time so there shouldn't be a need for a starting mat - its a race after all so gun time is whats counted.
They will have change all BHAA races to chip times with start and finish mats or none of them. Its one of the other really

Anonymous said...

Ref to the clown who said Anon "doesn't understand". I do. if it takes 20 seconds to cross the line then obviously your time is not correct compared to someone who takes 5 seconds to cross the line. A chip is of little use without a timing mat at the start. It should be one way or the other not a half way solution. Gun to chip isn't 100 % accurate in large crowd situations

JohnDun said...

As John has said a couple of years ago there were huge problems with runners filling up the chutes to the extent that they tailed back over the finish line and some runners couldn't even cross the finish line. The chips were introduced to alleviate this problem so that runners could cross the line and walk away and to also help to produce fast results which the BHAA were always being slammed for not doing. There was an announcement before the start informing everyone that there was no mat at the start and that if you were using a watch to start it as you crossed the line.If runners in the BHAA races are that concerned about accurate times I suggest they buy their own watch and time themselves.

John Desmond said...

Ref Chip Timing...
The primary reason for chip timing for this race or in fact any race is to generate a set of results for the organiser.
In the case of the JBS 5k, it's a simple case of using chip timing or have people queuing to reach the finish line.

Anonymous said...

Are people trying to be deliberately stupid here ? It has been mentioned a few times that the reason for the chips is to fix the issue with the chutes at the end. Do people even read the other replies ?
As a person who has regularly criticised the BHAA for the long queues at the end and the slow results, they should be commended on totally resolving that issue.

People are making a mountain out of a molehill with their need for exact times. Buy a bloody watch!

Anonymous said...

Going around in circles here..... ;-) What's the problem with putting a timing mat at the start or will the world crumble at the logic of the whole thing? It's probably the way it should be in larger more popular races such as the ballycotton series and so on.

Anonymous said...

Re chip timing. Great idea. I remember finishing a few yrs back and having to queue at the end. A guy runs past the queue, says sorry lads, and skips at least ten places in front of us. All too polite to say anything, of course. The point is its a race and your finishing position is more important than your time. Buy or borrow a Garmin if you want an accurate time for your run.

Reading all the earphones & timing comments above you'd hardly realise what a successful & enjoyable event it was - my first & the first time I've jogged 5k without walking in between, willed on by the tremendous atmosphere. Please stop detracting from a very successful event with minor gripes. Be thankful that we all had the opportunity to run in such a well organised race, well supported by stewards, runners & onlookers. Thanks to all who organised. Looking forward to the next one!

Fantastic race, well done BHAA. I was unsure about doing the race because the last time I did it there was a massive crowd (600+) and queues at the finish line. Although this time it went so smooth it was hard to believe there was 960 runners. Awesome stuff...Gun-to-line chip timing was perfect. No real queue to register. A massive feed of sandwiches afterwards. I hope the person who missed out on the sandwiches at the Fota 4miler made it to this one.
