This is a new event coming up in Schull in West Cork...The Mizen Maniac Mile. Proceeds in aid of Schull First Responders. Entry fee €15. As you can see from the video below, you start high up on a hill above Schull and assuming you don't break your neck, you end up on the pier at the waterfront.
Here is the press release.....
Want to run a four minute mile? With a little help from gravity, maybe you can. The Mizen Maniac Mile is a new addition to the Irish running calendar, a one mile downhill time trial which should enable a good runner to fun a four minute mile. The seaside village of Schull in scenic West Cork will be the venue for the innovative first ever "Mizen Maniac Mile" on Sunday May 5th, at 3pm.
Starting on the hill above the village of Schull known as Ardmanagh, the route takes runners downhill into the village of Schull, down the Main Street, a right turn onto Pier Road and then a last gallop down to the Pier where the run terminates. Runners will have Schull harbour and Roaring Water Bay in front of them as they progress to the finish line, which is where Schull pier meets the shore. Any overheated runners can run straight into the sea for a quick dip to cool off.
Timing chips will be used to ensure that every runner gets an accurate time for their Maniac Run. Everyone beating four minutes will get a certificate declaring them a "Maniac Miler" and there will surely be a certain cachet to being amongst the first ever Maniac Milers anywhere in the world. Sure to be a pride of place parchment in years to come. There will be a special prize for the fastest time.
The run is being organised in aid of Schull Community First Responders and entry fee for this unique event is €15. More information can be had from the website: www.maniacmile.com.

hard to determine but......If for example you can run 5:30 for a normal run on the flat what would this equate to for this race.....could you really gain 90 seconds ??
It's very hard to tell but my own very rough guess is that your time would be 30 seconds faster than usual.
Will be a great race but not the first by any means. The Meltham Maniac Mile was held annualy near Huddersfield in the North of England some years ago. It began in 1984 and the record was 3-24 set by Craig Wheeler a 16-year old schoolboy. This was in 1993 and at the time the world record was 20seconds slower! It has a 400 feet drop and a 60-year old has broken 4minutes in it, so lots of hope for club runners everywhere to set a great time. They also held the Murder Mile which was of course the other way round...all uphill.
€15 a mile. A bit steep. (excuse the pun)
Did this yesterday. Really well organized, and good crowds watching, but a very small turnout of runners. Hopefully it will grow in the future, nice to have a different type of race on the calender. Great effort from the winner, just 8 seconds over four minutes.
