Reminder...Cloyne 5k road race - Wed 6th Aug 2014

Just a reminder that the Cloyne 5k road race is coming up on Wednesday the 6th of August at 8pm. This is another one of the big 5k races in East Cork and is sure to get another large turnout on Wednesday again.

The race will be “chip timed”.  Cost is €10 for runners and €5 for anyone that wishes to walk.

You can enter on the day from 5pm or you can pre-register on Tuesday evening in the school from 5-7pm.

More info including the race flyer, maps and preview in this previous post.

The success of races like Cloyne are due in large part to the effort put in by the local community. Local people...many with no direct involvement with running...give up their time in order to assist an event which raises funds for various projects which benefit the local community.

This is a short report from the local community council about the race and shows where some of the funds that have been raised in the last few years have gone...

Under the guidance of Margaret Twohig, a new 5K Road Race in Cloyne was held on the 9th of September 2010 after an absence of many years. The race was in aid of Cystic Fibrosis that year and Margaret was kindly assisted with the organising by the Members of the local Community Council. It was a huge success and the Community Council decided to hold the event annually from thereon, dispersing funds to local groups i.e the Parents Association of Cloyne National School benefited from the road race in 2012. The funds raised the past two years have gone towards the newly built Children’s Playground which was opened in 2013.

Playground funding.
Main funding came from South & East Cork Area Development (SECAD) Approx 70%. Other funding came from Cork County Council. Approx 15%. The remaining funds were raised by Cloyne District Community Council (CDCC).
The Rachel Allen cookery demonstration was very successful and the annual 5K road race is also a great support to our fundraising.
We also had several other small fundraising events that were organised by many of our committee members throughout the past few years.

Many thank to all bodies and people who helped in raising these funds and also a big thanks to all in our community and all our kind sponsors who contributed to these funds and in making our race the success it is today.

Thank you all....Cloyne Community Council.
