Fionnuala McCormack finishes 25th in Olympic Marathon in 2:34

It was a mixed day for the Irish at the women's Olympic marathon in Japan on Saturday.

Fionnuala McCormack finished in a very respectable 25th place with a time of 2h 34m 09s, just under 7 minutes behind the winner in the 27 deg C heat. This was the fourth Olympic appearance for the former European cross country champion.

It was a tough day at the office for Cork's own Aoife Cooke who had to pull out of the race.

Aoife was just 28 seconds down on the leaders at the 10k mark but had to retire just before the halfway point.

This will obviously be a huge disappointment for Aoife who ran a 2:28 qualifying marathon back in April.

In an Instagram post, Aoife wrote..."Incredibly disappointed with having to pull out of the race today. Can't put my finger om what went wrong but the conditions really got to me, my body shut down and I couldn't really do anything about it"

The only other Irish runner in the race was Sinead Diver from Co. Mayo. She was representing Australia and finished in an impressive 10th place with a time of 2:31:14.

Guest Post: DEATH OF FORMER BALLYCOTTON WINNER ...by John Walshe

DEATH OF FORMER BALLYCOTTON WINNER ...by John Walshe

Karen MacLeod, a Scottish international runner who won both the Ballycotton ‘10’ and Ballycotton ‘5’ races back in the 1990s, died suddenly last week at the age of 63.

Karen MacLeod in the 1996 Olympic marathon in Atlanta

Although born in Tanzania, Karen grew up on the picturesque Isle of Skye off the north coast of Scotland. She didn’t start competitive running until the age of 24, having moved to Bath in England. Most of her best performances came when in the F35 age category, including her Ballycotton ‘10’ victory in 1996 when she set a course record of 55:34. The time would remain as the fourth fastest on the all-time list in the 40-year history of the race.

That same year of 1996 she qualified for the British Olympic team in the marathon where in the heat and humidity of Atlanta she finished 45th in 2:42:08. With a PB of 2:33:16 - which was set when finishing fourth at the Commonwealth Games in Canada in 1994 - Karen won international marathons in Bordeaux, Majorca and Seville. She also recorded personal bests of 33:17.88 (10,000m), 53:42 (10 miles) and 73:07 (half-marathon).

However her career was brought to an end in 1998 when she fell ill at the Boston Marathon. She was diagnosed as having Berger’s disease – a rare kidney problem – and she later had a kidney transplant from her sister Deborah. Just last November, as a act of gratitude to her sister, Karen teamed up with a number of top Scottish folk acts to raise funds for Highlands and Islands renal services through a charity album.

Many tributes have been paid to Karen on social media, including one from fellow international athlete Amanda Wright who wrote: “Devastated to read of the death of my great running friend and travelling partner. Beautiful person inside and out, you will be greatly missed, forever in my memories.”

Her kindness and concern was shown the year after her Ballycotton ‘10’ win and Olympic marathon when she was looking forward to returning to defend her title. When injury ruled her out she sent a two-page hand-written letter describing her disappointment, along with a card of good wishes from the Isle of Skye.

She also mentioned the possibility of taking in one of the summer races and, true to her word, on an August evening in 1997 she turned up at Ballycotton where she again established another course record of 28:27 for the five miles.

Sadly, Karen MacLeod is the third Ballycotton ‘10’ winner to have died in the past 12 months following the passing of Pat Hooper (1979 winner) last October and Jerry Kiernan (1983 and 1987 winner) in January. Also deceased are Jim Dingwall (1985 winner) who passed away in 2005 and Ursula Noctor who died at the young age of 28 in 1993, just five years after winning the race.

May they all rest in peace.

Rob Heffernan finishes 6th in Olympic 50k final

Rob Heffernan finished 6th in the final of the 50km race walk in Rio on Friday the 19th of August. At the half way mark, Rob looked as if he might be in the mix for a medal but muscle cramp in the second half forced him out of the back of the leading group.

At first, it looked as if he finished 6th but a Japanese athlete who was in 3rd place was subsequently disqualified after he had been found to obstruct a Canadian competitor. After another appeal, the Japanese athlete was reinstated so Rob was 6th.

The second Irish athlete was Brendan Boyce who finished in 19th position with a time of 3h 53m 59s. This top 20 finish is an improvement on his performance at the London Olympics where he finished in 27th place in a time of 3h 55m 01s.

The third Irish athlete Alex Wright had to pull out after 30km, perhaps a sign that he hadn't fully recovered from the 20k race last weekend.

Thomas Barr sets new National Record to finish 4th in Olympic final

In another amazing performance, Thomas Barr of Ferrybank AC ran a personal best time of 47.97 seconds to finish 4th in the final of the 400m Hurdles in Rio today. Not only was that a new national record but it also broke the previous record of 48.39 seconds which he set in the semi-final just two days ago.

With his trademark strong finish, Thomas stormed down the home straight to finish within five one-hundredths of a second of the Turkish athlete in 3rd.

It probably emphasises one again that if Ireland is to win medals in major world championships then it has to be in technical events like hurdles, race walking, hammer, etc.

A little bit of history was made this morning when Thomas Barr of Ferrybank AC in Waterford made it through to the Olympic final of the 400m hurdles in Rio. Not only did Thomas qualify but he also won his race in impressive style.

With his trademark kick in the final straight, he caught up and passed the leaders to take the win. His time was the 3rd fastest of the semi=finals.

The final is on Thursday evening Irish time.

An Unforgettable Marathon Finish by Gabriela Andersen-Schiess in the Los Angeles Olympics

The very first womens marathon in the Olympics was held in Los Angeles in 1984. While the race was won by Joan Benoit in a time of 2:24, one of the finishes that stood out was that of Gabriela Andersen-Schiess of Switzerland.

With the LA sunshine and temperatures hitting nearly 30 deg C, the conditions were very warm for running the full marathon distance of 26.2 miles. At the time, the rules stipulated that there could only be five water stations and the contestants couldn't be given water anywhere else. Unfortunately for Gabriela Andersen-Schiess, she missed the 5th and last station and got badly dehydrated as a result.

Her entrance to the Olympic stadium and the struggle over the last 400m which took five minutes and forty four seconds to complete would make it a memorable finish. What's maybe even as amazing if that despite her tortured finish, she still managed to finish 37th out of 44 in a time of 2h 48m 42s.

The video is about 10 minutes long...

Alberto Juantorena of Cuba...Double Gold Champion at the 1976 Olympics

The Sporting Witness programme on the BBC World Service covers various notable performances from the history of sport. Recently, they covered the story of Alberto Juantorena of Cuba, a double Gold Champion at the 1976 Olympics.

Early in his career, the 6ft 2in Alberto Juantorena tried to get on the Cuban Basketball team but didn't quite make the grade. A Polish coach named Zygmunt Zabierzowski persuaded him to try athletics and Juantorena soon became one of the best athletes in the world over 400m.

At the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, he was the hot favourite for Gold in the 400m. His coach however had other ideas and convinced him to try the 800m as well, a distance that was completely new to Juantorena.

After getting through to the 800m final, the 400m specialist with his 9ft stride not only won Olympic Gold but also set a new world record for the event with a time of 1:43:50.

Doing a double in the 400m/800m is highly unusual and is a feat that is very unlikely to be repeated.

Martin Fagan runs Olympic qualifying time in Zurich marathon

Martin Fagan has just completed the Zurich Marathon in a time of 2h 16m 09s which is inside the qualifying time of 2:17 required for the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Finishing in 11th place overall, Martin went through the half marathon mark in 1:06:16. Just to give you a better idea of how fast that is, a 1:06:16 half is 5:03 min/mile pace. A 2:16:09 full is 5:12 min/mile pace.

This will be a controversial result considering that he served a 2 year ban for taking EPO and there is likely to be a pretty mixed reaction to this.

Seb Coe raises the possibility of including cross country events in the Olympic games

Seb Coe recently launched his bid to become the next president of the IAAF...the international world body for athletics. As such, his opinion carries a lot of clout.

In a recent interview, he expressed a view that on how important cross country was and that it should be part of the future Olympic programme.

“One of the things that has really, I suppose, worried me in the last few years is that I don’t think enough younger coaches realise how important cross country is. I would love to see cross country back in the Olympic programme and maybe even something, thinking out of the box for a moment, why not include it in the Winter Olympic programme?”

The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road road is coming up at the end of this month in West Waterford. With that in mind, it might be appropriate to look back at the 1984 Olympic Marathon in Los Angeles and the performance that put the man from Villierstown on the podium.
