Niamh McCarthy of Carrigaline & Eagle AC wins Silver in the F41 Discus at Paralympic Games in Rio
Niamh McCarthy from Cork won a Silver medal in the Women's F41 Discus at the Paralympic Games on Thursday evening. The Carrigaline native who is a member of Eagle AC left it until the 5th round of throws to secure the Silver medal.
The chart below shows the progress of the competition and it was really between the top 5...three Tunisians, one Moroccan and Niamh.
In the first round, Niamh's first throw put her in the Bronze medal position. Her second attempt kept in that position but the distance was short of what she was capable of. By the time of the 4th round, it looked pretty grim as Niamh had slipped to 5th and that special throw seemed to elude her.
In the 5th round however, she nailed it with a throw of 26.67metres. The leader had a huge lead of nearly 7 metres and was never going to be caught. Niamh final throw would have been good enough to secure Bronze but in the end, that 5th round throw secured the Silver.
A remarkable performance for someone competing in their first Paralympic Games and only took up the sport recently.

Orla Barry from Ladysbridge in East Cork wins Silver in the F57 discus at the Paralympic Games in Rio
Orla Barry from Ladysbridge in East Cork added to her medal collection when she won a Silver medal in the F57 discus at the Paralympic Games in Rio. This is a step up from the Games in London in 2012 where she won Silver.

First 4 in Paralympic 1500m final run faster than winning time at Olympics!
One of the most remarkable races at the Paralympics has been the Men's 1500m in the T13 category.
There are three classes for visually impaired runners – T11, T12 and T13 – the higher the number, the less severe the impairment is.
Note the times for the first 4 below...
Amazingly, the top 4 finishers were faster than the winning time for the 1500m at the Olympics!
While perhaps the times at the Olympics were a bit slower due to it being more of a tactical race, it still highlights the high standards that these Paralympic athletes have.

Irish Men in the Marathon at the Olympics...1948 to 2016
Following the men's marathon at the Rio Olympics recently, I had a closer look at the history of the event since the London Games of 1948. As you can see below, it puts into perspective the performance of Paul Pollock with his time of 2:16:24. He is now the third fastest Irish man is an Olympic Marathon.
A total of 22 Irish men have completed the Olympic Marathon between 1948 and 2016. Dick Hooper completed 3 (80, 84 & 88) while John Treacy completed 2 (1984 & 1992). (DNF's excluded)
This is a breakdown per year. Note the numbers between 1968 to 1992 and the complete absence in the following Games.
Year - Venue - Number of Irish Men
1948 - London - 1
1952 - Helsinki - 1
1956 - Melbourne - 0
1960 - Rome - 2 & 1 DNF
1964 - Tokyo - 1 DNF
1968 - Mexico - 2
1972 - Munich - 3
1976 - Montreal - 3
1980 - Moscow - 2
1984 - Los Angeles - 3
1988 - Seoul - 2 & 1 DNF
1992 - Barcelona - 2 & 1 DNF
1996 - Atlanta - 0
2000 - Sydney - 0
2004 - Athens - 0
2008 - Beijing - 1 DNF
2012 - London - 1
2016 - Rio de Janerio - 3 (Max team of 3)
Following the 2008 Games in Beijing, the Irish Marathon Mission was established to improve the standards of elite Irish runners. This has been mostly financed by the organisers of the Dublin City Marathon and as you can see, it has helped in getting a full team for 2016.
An easier qualification standard for the Rio Olympics probably helped as well though.
This chart shows more clearly the times of the 22 Irish men between 1948 and 2016. As you can see, Paul Pollock's performance in Rio was faster than a lot of other Irish men in previous Olympic marathons. Kevin Seaward's time was the 5th fastest.
It''s also worth noting just how fast John Treacy and Jerry Kiernan were relative to other Irish marathon runners.
Note that these times were all set on different courses and with different conditions so we can't do an exact comparison. Still though, they are all Olympic Marathon finals so they are similar in that respect.
As a footnote, the following Irish athletes competed in the Olympic Marathon for these other countries...
1912 Kennedy McArthur (Antrim) 2:36.55 for South Africa
1964 Peter McArdle (Dundalk) 2.26.25 for the USA
1988 Peter Maher 2:24.49 for Canada

Rob Heffernan finishes 6th in Olympic 50k final
Rob Heffernan finished 6th in the final of the 50km race walk in Rio on Friday the 19th of August. At the half way mark, Rob looked as if he might be in the mix for a medal but muscle cramp in the second half forced him out of the back of the leading group.
At first, it looked as if he finished 6th but a Japanese athlete who was in 3rd place was subsequently disqualified after he had been found to obstruct a Canadian competitor. After another appeal, the Japanese athlete was reinstated so Rob was 6th.
The second Irish athlete was Brendan Boyce who finished in 19th position with a time of 3h 53m 59s. This top 20 finish is an improvement on his performance at the London Olympics where he finished in 27th place in a time of 3h 55m 01s.
The third Irish athlete Alex Wright had to pull out after 30km, perhaps a sign that he hadn't fully recovered from the 20k race last weekend.

Irish women in the Marathon at the Olympics...1984 to 2016
Following the women's marathon at the Rio Olympics last weekend, I had a closer look at the history of the event which was first introduced in 1984 at the Los Angeles Games. One of the most suprising findings is just how few Irish women have actually taken part in this Olympic event.
Some stats...
1) Only 11 Irish women have taken part in the Olympic Marathon.
2) Prior to the 2012 Games in London, only five Irish women had run an Olympic marathon. The three in 2012 and the three in 2016 brought the total up to eleven.
3) Amazingly, there were no Irish women in the Olympic Marathon from 1992 to 2004.

Thomas Barr sets new National Record to finish 4th in Olympic final
In another amazing performance, Thomas Barr of Ferrybank AC ran a personal best time of 47.97 seconds to finish 4th in the final of the 400m Hurdles in Rio today. Not only was that a new national record but it also broke the previous record of 48.39 seconds which he set in the semi-final just two days ago.
With his trademark strong finish, Thomas stormed down the home straight to finish within five one-hundredths of a second of the Turkish athlete in 3rd.
It probably emphasises one again that if Ireland is to win medals in major world championships then it has to be in technical events like hurdles, race walking, hammer, etc.

Thomas Barr wins Semi-Final of 400m Hurdles in Rio
A little bit of history was made this morning when Thomas Barr of Ferrybank AC in Waterford made it through to the Olympic final of the 400m hurdles in Rio. Not only did Thomas qualify but he also won his race in impressive style.
With his trademark kick in the final straight, he caught up and passed the leaders to take the win. His time was the 3rd fastest of the semi=finals.
The final is on Thursday evening Irish time.

Lizzie Lee from Cork qualifies for the Rio Olympics after running 2:32 in Berlin Marathon
Lizzie Lee of Leevale AC ran an amazing time of 2:32:51 in the Berlin Marathon on Sunday the 27th of September. Lizzie's previous best was 2:38:09 which she set back in Berlin in Sept 2013 so this is a huge jump.

Lizzie's time of 2:32:51 is the 5th fastest time for an Irish woman which is pretty amazing. To put it into perspective, that's about 5:50 per mile for 26.2 miles.

The qualifying standard for the Marathon in the 2016 Olympics in Rio is 2:42. The problem with qualifying though is that Ireland can only send three athletes for the women's marathon. For the 2012 Olympics in London, four had the qualifying time but only three could go. It may well happen again that more than three will qualify for Rio but Lizzie's time of 2:32:51 is just over 9 minutes inside the standard. That should mean that Lizzie is almost certain to go to Rio.
Post race intervew...
In the mens event, four got inside the 2:17 qualifying standard.

Martin Fagan runs Olympic qualifying time in Zurich marathon
Martin Fagan has just completed the Zurich Marathon in a time of 2h 16m 09s which is inside the qualifying time of 2:17 required for the Rio Olympics in 2016.
Finishing in 11th place overall, Martin went through the half marathon mark in 1:06:16. Just to give you a better idea of how fast that is, a 1:06:16 half is 5:03 min/mile pace. A 2:16:09 full is 5:12 min/mile pace.
This will be a controversial result considering that he served a 2 year ban for taking EPO and there is likely to be a pretty mixed reaction to this.

IAAF announce qualification standards for 2016 Olympics in Rio..
The entry standards for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games have been approved by the IAAF, the world governing body for athletics. They have abolished the old 'A' and 'B' standards and there is now just one.
* 50km walk...men only
*IWR = IAAF World Relays
One standard to watch out for is that of the marathon. For the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the mens standard was 2:15 and womans was 2:37. In the run up to that Olympics, only one Irish man qualified but there was some controversy in the womens selection as four had qualified but only three could be sent.
2012 World Championships.....In another development today, the IAAF announced that the 2021 World Championships would be held in Eugene, Oregon and it would be bypassing the normal bidding process. IAAF chief Lamine Diack said the decision was taken "in the interest of the global development of our sport". The sports brand Nike also has strong connections to the town.
