Results of the Munster Novice Cross Country Championships...Sun 23rd Oct 2016

The Munster Novice Cross Country Championships were held near Carraig na bhFear in Cork on Sunday the 23rd of October. The numbers taking part were pretty good with 66 in the women's race and 88 on the men's.

However, when you drill down into the results and look at the inter-county competition, you'll see that a lot of counties are missing. In the mens novice race, there was no county team from Kerry, Waterford and Limerick...i.e. half of the counties in Munster. For the women's event, there was no teams from Waterford or Limerick.

Aoife Cooke, Youghal AC and the Cork team win at the National Novice Cross Country Championships

The National Novice Cross County Championships were held this year in Dungarvan with West Waterford AC being the host club. It was a particularly good day for the clubs in East Cork with Aoife Cooke of Youghal AC winning a national title. Aoife also led Youghal AC to a national team Gold and the Cork team to Gold as well. A remarkable performance especially when you consider there were teams from all over the country.

The only other team from Cork was East Cork AC who finished 9th.

In the mens novice race, the Cork team finished in 4th place.

In a interesting twist, it turns out that Aoife Cooke is coached by her aunt Mary Sweeney who is a well figure on the local race circuit. Athletics Ireland have the story HERE

In terms of numbers, it was interesting to compare this year to last year when the National Novice XC Championships were held in Santry, Dublin.

In 2014, there were 133 women taking part with 16 teams from clubs and 10 counties being represented. This year, it was down to 89 women with 11 club teams and 9 counties.

By contrast, the mens numbers were up. 211 men this year compared to 197 in 2014. 24 teams from clubs this year compared to 23 last year. The number of counties represented remained the same...12.

Results of the Munster Novice Cross Country Championships, Waterford...Sun 25th Oct 2015

The 2015 Munster Novice Cross Country Championships were held on the outskirts of Waterford City on Sunday the 25th of October.

In the Men's Novice race, Leevale AC took the team title with Cork taking the County honours. In the Women's Novice race, Youghal AC took the title with Cork again taking the county title.

One thing that is very evident from the results is that the number of clubs with full teams was pretty low. There were just 8 men's teams and 7 women's teams.

Leevale AC & Youghal AC take titles at Cork County Novice Cross Country Championships

The Cork County Novice Cross Country Championships were held in Carrig na bhFear on Sunday the 4th of Oct 2015.

In the Novice mens race, Leevale AC took the title with two of their men finishing 1st and 3rd.

Leevale & Cork team dominate National Novice XC in Santry

The national novice cross country championships were held in Santry today and attracted runners from all over the country. In the mens race, teams from Cork were very much to the fore with Ben Thistlewood winning by a margin of 5 seconds. The Leevale AC athlete also helped his team take the national novice title by a margin of 2 points.

Results of the Cork Novice & Master Road Championships, Midleton - Sun 2nd Mar 2014

The Cork AAI Novice & Masters road championships were held in Midleton, East Cork on Sunday the 2nd of March with both men and women competing over a 4 mile course. The races were very well organised and it's a credit to the host club Midleton AC for doing such a fine job.

Cork County Novice & Masters Road Championships...Sun 29th March 2009

The county championships for Novice and Masters runners in Cork will take place in Carrignavar next Sunday, the 29th of March at 1:30pm. This is open to club athletes and anyone interested in taking part should contact their club secretary as soon as possible.

The mens race is 4 miles and the womens race is 2 miles.
