Notice...Route2Crook 5 mile race, West Cork - Sun 16th Aug 2015

This 5 mile road race in West Cork is coming up on Sunday the 16th of August 2015. In terms of location and scenery, this must be one of the most scenic in the country. Starting in Goleen, the 5 mile route runs along the coast and finishes in Crookhaven. On a sunny day, it is simply stunning.

From the organisers....This year is the 10th anniversary of the 'Route 2 Crook' 5 mile Road Race from Goleen - Crookhaven which will take place on Sunday 16th August with a new starting time of 11am and is organised by Mizen Rovers Underage GAA as a fundraiser for the club. Registration on the day at Goleen Community Sports Centre from 9.00am - 10.30am.

Main Runners  will start at 11am. Prizes for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd male & female plus prizes for all other categories. There will also be a prize for the 1st local male and 1st local female

Walkers  Starting time for  competitive walkers is 10am. There will be a prize for the 1st lady and 1st gent  to reach the finish line in Crookhaven. Start line is same as main race. Fun walkers are welcome to start when they have registered as in previous years. All walkers will be in for a chance to win spot prizes.

U16's will be bused from Goleen Community Sports Centre to their 2½ mile mark no later than 10.20am for 10.30am start.

Entry Fee ... RUNNERS - €10 ... WALKERS - €10 ... U16's - €5.

Water stations will be provided along the route. Refreshments will be provided to all participants at the finish in Nottage's. Presentation of medals etc will take place as soon as all participants have crossed the finish line.

Sharon Gayter from the UK sets new Mizen to Malin record...

Ultra distance runner Sharon Gayter from the UK arrived at Malin Head in Donegal on Thursday morning to set a new Mizen to Malin record. Having set out from Mizen Head in Cork  at 7am last Sunday morning, it took 4 days, 1 hour and 39 minutes to run the length of Ireland. That is roughly 21 hours faster than the time of 4 days 23 hours that Jen Salter set in June 2011 when she ran in the opposite direction from Malin to Mizen.

Gayter is a holder of several distance records including a 7 day treadmill record set last December.

Jen Salter sets new Malin Head to Mizen Head record...

On Friday the 10th of June, Jen Salter from the UK completed a run from Malin Head in Donegal to Mizen Head in Cork in a record time of 4 days 23 hours and 3 minutes.

The run was broken up as follows.......
Day 1...Sun 5th June 2011.....Starting off from Malin Head at the most northerly point of Donegal at 5am. Running through Derry and finishing near Dromore in Co.Tyrone, a distance of about 68 miles.

Day 2...Mon 6th...Starting again at 5am, running through Enniskillen and finishing in Keenagh, Co.Longford at 10:40pm, a distance of 71 miles.

Day 3...Tues 7th...Starting at 6:30am and running as far as Nenagh in Co.Tipperary, approx 61 miles.

Day 4...Wed 8th...Starting in Nenagh and finishing near Banteer in north-west Cork.

Day 5...Thurs 9th...Starting from north-west Cork and finishing 80 miles later at Mizen Head at 4:03am on Friday morning, the 10th of June.....a total of 4 days 23 hours and 3 minutes.

All of the information with witness signatures will now be submitted as a claim to the Guinness Book of Records.

Coming up on the 3rd of July, the French based Irish runner Malcom McLoughlin will run in the opposite direction from Mizen to Malin in aid of charity.

Raheny AC run from Malin to Mizen this weekend...

This was something I meant to put up a while back but with all the local races, it kind of got forgotten about.

The Dublin based club Raheny AC are doing a sponsored charity run from Malin Head in Donegal to Mizen Head in Cork this weekend. They will have a relay of runners and hope to complete the distance in 65 hours. All proceed are going to the Childrens Hospital in Crumlin.

The purpose of the run is to raise funds for the Children’s hospital in Crumiln and donations will be welcome from anyone joining us and we would request a donation of at least €20 for anyone looking to complete a marathon in return for which you will get a commemorative medal and t-shirt.

Runner attempts new Mizen to Malin record...
I'm not sure if this link will work or for how long! It's a short video clip from RTE news about someone trying to run from Mizen Head to Malin Head and set a new record.
