Results of the Great Island 4 mile & 10 mile road race, Cobh - Sun 12th Apr 2014

The Great Island 10 mile road race was a big success this year with a boost in numbers due to the new 4 mile race. While the 10 mile race was down slightly from 568 in 2014 to 528 in 2015, the 237 that turned out for the 4 miler should have made a big difference to the money raised for charity.

Another factor today was the weather which wasn't great to start with. It may have turned off a few people but in reality, it was fine, just a small bit damp early on.

Great Island 4 mile & 10 mile in Cobh this weekend...Sun 12th Apr 2015

The big race in Cork this weekend is of course the Great Island 10 mile in Cobh. This is on Sunday morning the 12th of April at 10:30am. You can enter on the day for €25. All proceeds from this race go towards the Irish Cancer Society.

This is the 10 mile course below...It starts and finishes in Cobh and takes in a loop around the island. There are two hills which are about 400m long but there is plenty of downhill running as well.

One new feature is the addition of a 4 mile race. This in contrast to the 10 miler is a much faster course. There are no hills worth talking about and you should expect to set a fast time. See the 4 mile course below...

The entry fee for the 4 mile race on the day is €15 and it starts at 10:45am.

The race HQ is at the local community centre.

More info in this previous post.

Reminder...Great Island 4m & 10m race, Cobh - Sun 12th April 2015

Now that the Mallow 10 mile is out of the way, the next big 10 mile race coming up in Cork is the Great Island 10 on Sunday the 12th of April 2015. There was a photo shoot recently in Fota with Rob Heffernan who was on hand to endorse the upcoming event.

From the organisers......We had great fun with sporting legend Rob Heffernan last Friday for our photocall in Fota and are delighted another one of Cork's Sports Stars are supporting our event on April 12th. ‘It’s fantastic to see a local running event go from strength to strength with runners from all over Ireland descending on the seaside town of Cobh for the 6th time this year, in what has become a major event on the running calendar in Cork, a great course, great challenge and all for a great cause’

As well as the usual 10 mile race, there is a properly measured 4 mile race this year as well which will suit runners and walkers who prefer the shorter distance.

More info including details on how to enter, course previews, etc in this race notice.

Blog extract #4 from Sonia O'Sullivan after running the Great Island 10 mile race last Sunday

The Great Island 10 mile road race was held in Cobh last Sunday the 13th of April and all proceeds from the race will go towards the Irish Cancer Society. One of those that took part in the race this year was the former World champion and Olympic silver medalist Sonia O'Sullivan. She has written a series of blog extracts for the organisers as she prepared for the race and now this is her post race report...

Blog extract from Sonia O'Sullivan..Pt 4...
Great Island 10 2014...The Great Island 10 didn't disappoint on Sunday, it was the perfect day for running and great to see so many loyal supporters of this Great event in Cobh, return to try to go better over the hills in Cobh.

It's not always about running fast times and setting Pb's, sometimes we need to run on country roads over rolling hills alongside beautiful scenery to get a different racing experience. There are so many races to choose from these days often in very close proximation. This requires the race to have something special or a cause close to people hearts to help make the decision where to race.

For me it is a little easier, the Great island run is in my home town and if I am home then I have no choice but to lace up the shoes and race around the streets. Though nowadays I don't always view it as racing just getting out and challenging myself and pushing myself a little just to remind me of those competitive days when the clock and anyone in the race was there to be beaten. I knew I was a little fitter this year than last so my main aim was to improve on last years time which was just under 70minutes. Last year it was such a challenge to break 70minutes I never dreamt that I wold enjoy the run as much as I did on Sunday.

I stood on the start line with the familiar faces from the local road racing scene, the ever present Mary Sweeney always a pleasure to meet on the road, always enjoying her running and so encouraging of others we wished each other well, with the most important message to each other, to enjoy the run and not be under any pressure. It would be very easy for me to feel like I should try to win the race in Cobh, but I have to be realistic and also I want to pace myself so I am less likely to take risks these days as I need to be smiling and happy when I get to the finish line. PB's are beyond me but running faster than my normal day to day running is satisfaction enough that I am not just jogging around but testing myself enough to feel like I have run a race and got something from it.

So I was very pleasantly surprised when I crossed the finish line, 6 minutes faster than last year. I couldn't believe it smiling and waving as we ran through the town made me wonder what made me so slow last year, maybe too much cycling and swimming.....this year I just keep the swimming and cycling topped up each week enough to allow me a rest from running everyday and enough to help strengthen my weaker muscles and allow me to run better and stronger and feel in control of my running.

I set my watch to record every mile so that I had little checkpoints along the way and the further I went and was able to maintain a steady pace just under 6:30 per mile the more confident I felt that I was going to post a good time, but what surprised me the most was the ease which I was able to do this as all my memories were of last year and really struggling in the final 2 miles and finding the hills so much harder.

As I was running along I was thinking of that Samuel Beckett quote which has been talked about recently talking of failure and trying again to fail better and to continue to try and try again. It wasn't that I failed last year but I set myself a benchmark, a target to aim for this year and all I wanted to do was to come back and run better .

So for all those first timers, don't say never again, but think I know I can do that better next year, you will know what to expect and you will know what to do to help prepare better . It will be very hard for me to improve again, but I am not afraid to try and hopefully it will be the Great Island Run again next year, it's nice to come home and race around the familiar roads from my youthful training days.
It was always Wednesday hills on that very loop, run along but try harder on the hills and each week improve and get up the hills better while relaxing in between and taking control of the run.

Well done to everyone that came and supported the Great Island 10, the Irish Cancer Society and all the sponsors without whom the race would be an even greater challenge to stage so successfully. To all the volunteers, friends and family who make this such a special day for the people of Cobh and particularly Rosslyn and Eamonn Crotty who dedicate their time to this race each year to ensure that research continues in the fight against Cancer.

Blog extract from Sonia O'Sullivan as she prepares for the Great Island 10 mile road race #3

The Great Island 10 mile road race in Cobh is coming up on Sunday the 13th of April and all proceeds from the race go towards the Irish Cancer Society. There is also a 5 km fun run/walk option for anyone not up to the longer distance. More details in this earlier post.

One of those taking part in the race this year is the former World champion and Olympic silver medalist Sonia O'Sullivan. She has written a blog extract for the organisers as she prepares for the race. The first part can be seen HERE and the second part HERE...

Blog extract from Sonia O'Sullivan..Pt 3...
I've been in Ireland for just over a week now and seems like the blog writing has gone to ground but not to worry the running is still being done and now I'm in Cobh taking it easy ahead of the Great Island 10 on Sunday.

We touched down in Dublin via Dubai, last Tuesday lunchtime to a beautiful spring day, it was April 1st so I was a little worried the weather Gods may have been playing an April fools joke giving me a false sense of security after leaving Melbourne on a 30C sunny day.

After a short walk and a bite to eat, as evening was approaching and jet lag about to kick in I went for an easy run around the grounds of Malahide castle. It was a very slow run but so nice to be out in the crisp air and bright sunshine. I was surprised when my watch read 55mins when I walked back in the door. Another few hours and I would be able to allow myself to bed, I was so looking forward to a real bed after 24hours cramped up in row 27 on a very full Emirates plane.

It was so good to get a good nights sleep even if I did wake up close to 5am, I read a little had a coffee and read the paper before embarking on day 2 to the castle grounds. It is so nice to have a park close by to run around and get away from all the early morning traffic. I tried to work out the park as my friend who lives close by told me it's really not that big once you figure it out, I still managed 67minutes very easy without ever needing to look at my watch to check if I had run enough to allow myself run back home.

I was staying near Malahide with Sophie as I was due to work on Sunday for RTE at the Great

Ireland run in the Phoenix park and Sophie was going to have a run in the kids race. As I wasn't running in the 10km race, I decided I would have a run at the local Malahide Parkrun on Saturday morning.

On Thursday day 3 in Ireland I was ready for a little increase in pace and a reminder of faster running. I met my friend Feidhlim in the park for a mini threshold session. All up a short run, which included 3x3mins at HR and a few strides after running to and from the park. I always find a session breaks up the run and also creates some variety when running in the same park each day. In the afternoon, I went to visit a school in Dublin where a friend is a teacher and afterwards I took Sophie on a walk through Dublin and a quick visit to the book of Kells in Trinity college.

Friday Day 4 off the plane was another easy longish run, 71mins around the castle grounds, I was just about figuring out the various loops, though still not finding the park too small. I find when traveling that running is the most convenient activity but I am also always aware of not running too many days in a row so I was on the lookout for my next day off.

Saturday morning, we drove to the castle and did an easy warm up for the 5km Parkrun, Sophie decided that she would have a run too and I was slightly worried when she peeled off the layers and took to the start line in shorts and singlet. The last two times I have lined up in Parkrun with Sophie she has managed to beat me too the line and it looked like today would be no different as she raced away over the first few Km's. 5km is a bit long for young athletes so I could sense Sophie tiring just after half way or maybe she was just saving energy for the Parkrun kids run the next day. In any case I recorded my fastest Parkrun of the year just under 19minutes and Sophie ran the exact same time that she ran at out local Parkrun in Melbourne 19:13.

It always takes at least 3 days to overcome the horrible jet lag feeling, then things start lto feel normal again. Running helps to recreate the daily routine and also eating at the right times and staying in bed even reading when you wake up in the early hours forces the body and mind onto Irish time.
Sunday was day 6 in Ireland, so I was happy to get out early and squeeze in a 64minute run before heading to the Phoenix park for some special comments on RTE while enjoying the racing in the park.

I had a job lined up on Tuesday with Glenilen farm to help launch a new range of the already popular yoghurts that will be appearing in shops soon, we were posing in Photos eating yoghurts alongside a very lovely Jersey Cow called Sue in the middle of Dublin no less. It was a very enjoyable morning bringing the farm to the city .

As a result of Tuesdays activities I decided to change my normal Tuesday training session to Monday morning when I would have a bit more time and wouldn't be rushing. I also felt that I was reaching a plateau with the Heart rate sessions so decided to jazz things up a little bit and vary the pace. After much thought and throwing ideas around in my head I decided 6mins at HR, followed by 4x1minute with 30seconds rest, 6mins HR and another 4x1minute with 30seconds rest, then finally 6mins at HR. The run was nearly 80 minutes all up so a good long run and session combination.

My non running day finally arrived today and I was reunited with the swimming pool and the gym. Unfortunately Cobh Swimming pool is closed for repairs and I'm sure so many people will appreciate Cobh pool when it re opens as we were forced up to silversprings at 6:30am. Apart from the extra drive to silver springs it is a very busy pool at 6:30am. I traveled with local Iron woman Joyce Wolfe and joined in with a 4km swim session, mind boggling but makes such a difference when you are told what to do and once started you just keep on going up and down the pool.

We went for a lovely lunch at the Castle in Blackrock. On the way home I couldn't resist the pull of the energie fitness in Mahon so called in for a quick TRX session. One week in Ireland and I've touched on all the routine activities.

Time is flying past and with just 4 days to go to the Great Island 10, things are winding down . It's time to decide what pace to aim for on Sunday and where to start racing. I think I will take it handy enough the first half and then start racing the clock and see if I can maybe run a little faster than last year and hopefully I will feel better doing it to and in control rather than hanging on at the end .
It's good and bad for me knowing the roads around Cobh as I will know at every point how far to go and what's coming up . Hopefully the sun will shine and the crowds will turn up and we will all have a great day out on Sunday.

Notice...The Great Island 10 mile road race, Cobh - Sun 13th Apr 2014

So far in 2014, all of the 10 mile road races have proved to be hugely popular. The Dungarvan 10 and Mallow 10 both reached their entry limits a lot earlier than previous years while the 2,300 online entries for the 2014 Ballycotton 10 sold out in about 90 minutes.

The next big 10 mile road race coming up in Cork is the Great Island 10 in Cobh on Sunday, the 13th of April 2014 at 10:30am. Last year, they got 611 with a big community effort to make sure that it's a success and it's looks likely to be equally popular again this year.

All of the proceeds from this race go towards the Irish Cancer Society. When this race was first set up in 2010, the organisers had a target of raising €100,000 in the space of 5 years. Last year in 2013, they hit the €100k mark one year early. The aim now is to build on that success and to continue to raise much needed funds for this charity.

Entries....You can enter online HERE for €19.50 including all costs.

Link to postal entries to follow...

The race website is HERE.

5 km fun run / walk...A 5km walk / run will take place on the same day for those less inclined to run 10 miles but want to be a part of the day. Leaving from the Community Centre @ 10.00am (30 mins before the main event) and will finish at the G.P.O. There is no entry fee for the walk / run but entrants would be expected to take sponsorship cards which are available from Sonya Murphy on 087 7904895 or email sonyaomurphy@gmail.com

Results of the Great Island 10 mile road race...Sun 21st Apr 2013

The Great Island 10 mile road race in Cobh was held in almost perfect conditions on Sunday, the 21st of April....mild but not too warm, sunny but with some cloud. The provisional results have 611 finishers, up slightly on last year.

I missed out on this race last year but managed to make it this time around. Having done Dungarvan and Ballycotton this year, I'd put it on a par with them. Sure, the course isn't easy and there are no shortage of hills but maybe that's part of the attraction of it...a tough challenging course.

All proceeds from this race went towards the Irish Cancer Society and I think they're up around the €100k mark now in terms of what has been collected since this race was first held.

Comedian Des Bishop launches Great Island 10 Mile Race...

Comedian Des Bishop was on hand to launch a charity event in Cobh for the Irish Cancer Society, a cause that is close to his heart, even though he had just received news that his father Michael had died. Des was appearing at the Cork Opera House and carried on like a true professional despite hearing the sad news. Michael Bishop had been suffering from lung cancer for some time.

The second annual ‘Great Island 10 Mile Road Race’ will take place on 17th April 2011 at 1pm. and once again it is being arranged for the benefit of the Irish Cancer Society and for Palliative Care in particular. Up to 500 runners ran through the streets and roads of Cobh and the Great Island last year raising €35,000. This year an even bigger entry is anticipated.

“There are few of us who have not been touched by the scourge of cancer and statistics suggest that very few of us are likely to escape completely”, Eamon Crotty of the organising committee said. “Palliative care is something none of us wants to experience but it is also something that has to be witnessed to be fully appreciated. It offers cancer sufferers the opportunity to spend their remaining time in the relative comfort of their own homes surrounded by those they care most about and ensuring the dignity and privacy that only a home can offer. It is impossible to put a price on such a service”.

The ‘Great Island 10 Mile Road Race’ will take place on the 17th April beginning at 1pm and a 5k walk will also take place at 12.30 pm on the same day for those less inclined to run. Sponsorship cards are available from sonyaomurphy@gmail.com and she can also be contacted on 0877904895.
