Litter issues after the 2022 Cork City 10-Miler

Following the Cork City 10-Miler last Saturday, someone sent on the following message on Sunday with the photos above...

"Any chance you guys can clear up the mess you've left on the old railway line please there are bottles of water strewn everywhere and it's an absolute disgrace the way participants and organisers have left the place."

All race organisers should have a 'Leave No Trace' policy and waste management should be part of the race process. If water bottles are handed out then all discarded bottles and gels should be picked up straight away after the race has finished.

If enough local residents and members of the public complain to the Cork City Council about post race littering then the easiest solution is for the Council to ban all races on Greenways and walkways. Something to consider.

Results & Photos of the Cork City 10-miler - Sat 20th Aug 2022

First 3-women in the 2022 Cork City 10-miler (L-R) Fiona Santry (3rd), Shona Heaslip (1st) & Niamh Moore (2nd)

This years Cork City 10-miler was held on Saturday the 10th of August 2022 with 1054 runners crossing the finish line. This is almost identical to the 1045 in the last edition in 2019 which is a good showing most races are showing negative growth since the pandemic.

Someone did send me a message to say that they measured the course long at 10.12 miles but I suspect the tree coverage over the railway cutting in Blackrock might lead to some poor GPS coverage and inaccurate readings.

(Update: Someone said in the comments that the first mile was too long)

Notice…John Buckley Sports Cork City 10 Miler - Sat 9th Sept 2017

Here is another one for the diaries. The John Buckley Sports Cork City 10 Miler race is coming up on Saturday the 9th of September 2017 at 6pm. This is the fourth year of this particular event and this year, the race HQ is Shandon Boat Club on the Marina.

Located in the heart of Cork City, this is going to be popular with a lot of runners. 10 miles is a favourite distance for a lot of people as can be seen by the huge numbers doing the various 10 milers like Dungarvan and Ballycotton in the Spring.

As 10 mile courses go, this is up there with the fastest of them and takes in the flat walkways around Mahon and Blackrock.

Blarney Half-Marathon & Cork City 10 Miler numbers

Following on from the John Buckley Sports Cork City 10 Miler recently, someone asked me about the numbers and if they were well down on what they used to be like for the Blarney Half-Marathon?

For those of you new to the running scene, the Blarney Half-Marathon was organised by St.Finbarr's AC and they changed it to a 10 miler in the city in 2014.

I looked at the figures and here are the results...

As you can see from the chart, the numbers grew up to 2010 much in line with the running boom. In 2011, the Charleville Half-Marathon started and it got 446 in its first year. Whereas the Blarney Half-Marathon numbers might have been expected to grow or at least level off, it's obvious that a number of people were opting for the faster course in Charleville.

In 2014, the Blarney Half-Marathon came to an end and the race changed to a 10 miler in Cork City. As you can see, it has been remarkably steady at about 500 per year since then.

So the answer to the original query is that the numbers are actually up when compared to 2011-2013. It's down on the 2010 peak in Blarney but still pretty good. Comparing the three years of the 10 miler from  2014-2016 to the half from 2011-2013 then the move into Cork City was a success.

Results & photos of the Cork City 10 Miler...Sun 13th Sept 2015

The 2015 John Buckley Sports Cork City 10 Miler was held on Sunday the 13th of Sept in very wet conditions. It was hammering down at 8am, by 9am the sun made an appearance but after 10am, the rain came back with a vengeance. Running a short race in those conditions is tough but 10 miles is even more so.
