Ballincollig 5k parkrun cancelled - Sat 22nd Feb25

Due to all the rain this week, the course for the 5k parkrun in Ballincollig Regional Park is flooded and the event on Saturday 22nd of February 2025 is cancelled.

Other options include the parkruns at 9:30am in Macroom or in the Tramore Valley Park. Getting the train to Midleton might make for an interesting option as well. (... and Glen River as well of course!)

Update: Mallow is cancelled as well.

Guest Post: Two hundred 5k parkruns for Michael Comyns ...by Mick Dooley

Michael Comyns (L) with Mick Dooley (R)

Well done to Michael Comyns on completion of his 200th parkrun this morning (11th Nov 2023) in Ballincollig Regional Park.

An avid GAA man who took up parkrunning in 2016  and 9.30 of a Saturday morning is an important date in the diary each week for Mick .

A big man with a great handshake and a pleasure to meet at the end of each parkrun.

New path in Ballincollig Regional Park now open

The new path in the eastern part of Ballincollig Regional Park is now open to the public.

As can be seen from the photos, the Council workers have made a great job of it and should be a welcome addition to the park.

Hopefully in time, this path will eventually link up to a path by the River Lee and into the city.

New riverside path proposed for Ballincollig Regional Park

9th May 2019... Update on the new riverside walkway in Ballincollig.

From Cork County Council....Last week marked the final contract signing by Cork County Council for improvement works to Ballincollig Regional Park.

Works on the project, carried out by Sole Sports & Leisure Ltd., will link the Regional Park to the 20 acre amenity lands at Fionn Laoi. The development will open a section of the park behind the former heritage centre to the public and create a 1km riverside walk and cycleway. It is anticipated that the work will start on the 20th of May and be completed in July.

This is one of the final projects to be completed by Cork County Council in the park since its acquisition in 1977. Usage of the park, which had formerly been a gunpowder mills, has seen a huge increase in recent years, with over 660,000 visitors for 2018.

In addition to the walkway project, Cork County Council will be planting hundreds of additional trees and developing wildflower meadows and picnic areas.

The park will be transferred to Cork City Council on the 1st of June 2019 for future maintenance.

New junior 2k parkrun in Ballincollig on the way!

It looks as if there is a group forming in Ballincollig to set up a junior event there, a separate entity totally from the 5k event.

This event will be for 4 to 14 year olds and will be held on a 2km course in the Regional Park every Sunday morning at 9:30am. As with all parkruns, it will be completely free.

They've already got a course mapped out which they're waiting for approval from the council for & also they're trying to do a bit of fundraising to pay for the startup costs.

If you're interested in being involved or want to help out then send an email to john DOT kissane AT parkrun DOT com

He will then put you in touch with the event director.

New Defibrillator for the Ballincollig 5k parkrun!

Thanks to some Tesco Blue token campaigns and generous donations by runners, a new defibrillator has been bought for the 5k parkrun in Ballincollig!

The model purchased was a Zoll AED Plus which was in the region of €1,200.

Another local volunteer group, Ballincollig First Responders, have kindly offered to train 10 of the organisers of the local parkrun in its use.

The photo above shows Suzi Quirke and Maretta Brennan, co-Event Directors of Ballincollig parkrun with the Manager of Tesco Ballincollig.

Perhaps the organisers of other 5k parkruns might consider doing something similar?

The reason I noticed this photo in particular was that the runner on the right Kei Ado, ran 21:49 in Ballincollig and also ran in the 5 mile race in Castletownbere in West Cork a few hours later!
