Back in March of 2024, the UCC athletics track at the Mardyke was closed due to safety concerns as the track surface was beginning to disintegrate in places. Then there was the saga about who was going to pay for a new rack surface.
On the far left, you can see the remains of the old track crumpled up on the grass. On the mid-right, you can see how the new track comes in rolls. In the centre, you can see how they are using bricks to weigh down the edges of the strips to allow the adhesive to cure properly.
All of this work of course requires dry weather so that may be a factor in the coming weeks. After the new track is put down, all of the lanes and markings will need to be painted on.

Update - 22nd Oct 2025 - The track will reopen on Tues 28th Oct 2025. The lines on the track will be painted in the Spring of 2026.
Update - 9th Sept 2025 - The new surface is now completed and it just needs to be painted now.

To allow a facility bearing Sonia O'Sullivan's name to fall into disrepair and remain closed for nearly 18 months is very disrespectful to Sonia herself.
Its disrespectful to the Cork running community, doesn't matter who it is named after.
Cork nees to get the act together with tracks and access
Looks like Cork City Athletics will be back on track soon enough. This resurfacing has cost over 820K!
4 tracks in Tipperary? Clonmel, Moyne, Templemore and Nenagh indoors? How is that Cork rely on two so much...!
Sure the track in mtu cost around the same last year. I never get why ucc wanted someone else to pay for this.
1 in reality. Mardyke has always been a bit of a shambles and completely overpriced
Will clubs be rushing back to it? I heard they were looking for crazy money for clubs to train on it in comparison to MTU. More economical to stay at MTU?
What's happened with the Midleton track?
MTU is half the price of the Mardyke.
Which never made any sense as MTU is twice the facility. Stand, indoor strip, field events etc.
