BHAA numbers - A matter of perspective

Some of you may not be aware that there are two versions of the BHAA i.e. the Business Houses Athletic Association.

The Cork BHAA hold some of the most popular road races in Cork with the evening races getting anywhere from 300 to 1200 finishers. There is also another version in Dublin known just as the 'BHAA' and they hold their own series of races.

Last Tuesday, they had the BHAA Irish Life 5 mile race in Dunboyne, Co Meath. They said that this was a 'record 220 runners'.

If a Cork BHAA evening race got 220 runners, we'd be wondering what went wrong, why were the numbers so low?

It really is a matter of perspective. A record number for the Dublin BHAA may look poor to us here in Cork but maybe the numbers here in Cork are exceptionally high?

The competition for races in Dublin, and surrounding areas, is non-comparable to Cork. It is possible to race practically every day/night. Indeed, frequently, there are choices of races/events on the same day/evening. While this may seem to be a good option, it does dilute the competition and competitors.
That said, Cork BHAA is in very rude health and it is fantastic to see the phenomenal numbers participating. BHAA Dublin is certainly not achieving the numbers it once did, sad to see, as they offer a super, well run, friendly experience.
