This year's Cork BHAA Musgrave 5k road race was held on the Marina in Cork City on Wednesday 14th of June 2023 with 359 runners crossing the finish line. As can be seen from the chart above, this is down 2% on the figure for 2022.
Considering that the evening was dry, the numbers would probably have been up this year if it wasn't for the Grant Thornton 5k in the same area the previous evening. Considering that the Grant Thornton race had 642 finishers, the Cork BHAA race did well to get as many as 359 runners.
As for why the Grant Thornton race didn't have a bigger impact, I had a look at the percentage of runners breaking 20-minutes. For the Cork BHAA race, 24.5% of the field broke 20-minutes which is reasonably high. For the Grant Thornton race by contrast, just 5.3% of the field broke 20-minutes which is a huge difference.
What we might infer from this is that most of the people running in the Grant Thornton 5k were people that wouldn't be regulars at road races and would probably only participate in major events like the Cork City Marathon 10k or corporate commercial events like the Grant Thornton where their employer might be paying the high entry fee.
The Cork BHAA race by contrast mainly attracted the usual BHAA runners as well as a lot of club runners who are regulars at road races.
