The Cheetah Run 5k in Fota Wildlife Park organised by Eagle AC is coming up on Thursday the 18th of May 2023 at 8pm. As well as there being the usual 5k race, there is also a one-mile race for juveniles (11-15 year olds).

Update 15th May: Juvenile race sold out. The 5k has now sold out which I am told is a few days ahead of them selling out in 2022.

Info from the organisers... Eagle AC together with Fota Wildlife Park and with the co-operation of the OPW, are delighted to announce the return of the Eagle AC Cheetah Run 5km race for 2023.
We are very grateful to our sponsors John Buckley Sports & Brooks for helping to make this possible.

The Cheetah run offers a truly unique experience to run a 5K race (adults & those aged 16 and above) or a 1 mile race for those aged 11-15 years, within a wildlife park. Your supporters will be not only your family and friends but also all the animals within the park. The Giraffes & Ostrich’s always take a particular interest in our runners as they gather for the race start! With the additional celebration of Fota Wildlife Park’s 40th Anniversary, this promises to be one to remember.

Number collection will be at the ticket booths and entry for those with their numbers already via post can go in the main gates. We will have 4 booths in use for the 5k divided up by clearly signed surname groups, and one for the 1 mile/general enquiries.

Catering will be in the wildlife park’s Savannah café but using our own equipment and volunteers. Entry will be via the gift shop door which will be open on the evening for the first time this year, and exit will be through the café entrance. Prize giving will be at the raised "plaza" type area outside the gift shop windows.

Included in both entries is free access to the park for a small family group attending with the race participant. Access will be controlled on the night and gates open at 6:30pm.

A few important reminders, for your safety & the safety of the animals in the park.

• No children’s bikes or scooters are permitted in the park
• Participants cannot run with buggies or strollers
• No pets are permitted
• No drones or balloons permitted in the park
• No race flyers to be circulated during the race or placed on cars in the carpark.
• No headphones/ air pods etc are permitted, please listen to the stewards.
• Number transfers are not permitted.

***

5k Course...The same 5k route will be used again which takes in all areas of the Wildlife Park.

The entry fee includes free access to the park for two adults and two children on the night. Access will be controlled on the night and will be open from 6:30pm.

There will also be a 20% discount voucher for John Buckley Sports. The savings on say a new pair of shoes would cover the entry fee. This must be used in the period two weeks after the race.

Juvenile 1 Mile Race.....There is also a 1 mile race for juveniles this year (Ages 11, 12, 13, 14 & 15). This will take place before the 5k race at 7:15pm. The numbers will be limited to 100. Entries for this will open also on the 8th of April. The one mile race has been measured accurately by Jones Counter, will be chip timed and all finishers will receive a medal. Please note that there are no prizes in the juvenile race. The entry fee is €8 including an online processing fee.

Update 10th Apr 2023: All of the Juvenile 1-mile entries are now gone.

As always, entrants can bring family members to either race. This includes free access to the wildlife park for the runner and family members.

There is also a 20% discount voucher from John Buckley Sports.

The minimum age is 16 for the 5k race as per Athletics Ireland permit recommendations.

5k Race...There will be prizes for the first 5 men and women as well as the usual age categories.

I would seriously advise people that have an interest in doing this race to enter as soon as it opens.

This is one race that sells out every year. Updates about the race will be made available here and on the race page on the Eagle AC website.

Sponsor...John Buckley Sports is one of the race sponsors and is one of the main specialist running shops in Cork City. They have a wide stock of gear in the shop and on their website....www.johnbuckleysports.com

They have been in business since 1981 and it's fair to say that the shop is highly regarded by many of the runners on the local road race scene. They also have a app which you can download to your smartphone which gives a generous discount when using it.

Can't wait and Eagle are such an inclusive club and very accommodating for slower runners.
