This event was advertised at costing 12 euro (see poster) yet when we arrived we were told it was 15 euro. Many of us arrived carrying only twelve as advertised only to be told to go back to the car and get the balance or "could you not borrow it". This was added to by the fact that there was only ONE LADIES TOILET. A total Rip Off that they could not hire a couple of Porta Loo's with the huge profit they make. OK half the profit is going to charity surely they could afford a Porta Loo out of the rest.

First time doing belgooly 4 mile. Great race. Well Marshalled great course coffee tea cakes loads of prizes everyone was welcoming. Smoothly run event definitely be back next year.

Isn't €15 fairly dear for a 4 mile race ,as races go ?? Wouldn't €10 be plenty.

Agree with last comment, was half thinking of not entering/running it on principle when I saw the €15 entry fee after being advertised as €12. Can't see myself running it next year.

Think €15 is pushing it for a 4 mile race, especially when it was advertised as being €12!!

I wouldn't have paid 15 if they had advertised it as 12 I be insisting on 12 or wouldn't have done it

Just for the record, I checked the race flyer. It clearly states a €12 entry fee. No mention of €15 on the day.

Belgooly did say on their Facebook page entry on Dec 24th that it would be €15 entry on the day though I imagine many would not have seen it. Charging extra on the day for a 5k race isn't a very welcome departure from normal procedures for club races.

Seriously?!?! The start was a mess. It was very poor for a club race. It was obvious the organisers had very little experience organising road races.

hi guys, i've done the belgooly 4 mile a few times. it's a local club running a race and splitting the proceeds with a charity. they provide chip timing which has a cost and it's always a well organised race and something to look forward to. there was a post on dec 24th on the belgooly ac facebook page saying that entry on the day was 15 euro. i entered on the day too for 15 euro . really enjoyable day and thanks to belgooly ac again. i hope that clubs will keep hosting races like this as we have lost a few over the past few years.

Well start was only messy because people did allow enough time to get to the start. Race was meant to start at 12. People still coming to start as we started at 12.10ish. As I said first time I did belgooly 4 mile. I can't imagine you can blame organisers for people not allowing enough time. I didn't need to go to the toilet so that wasn't a problem for me and I only had a €20 note so had no problems.

To be perfectly fair, i don't think a fraction of runners in Cork would have checked Belgooly AC's Facebook page. This site is our gospel. End of. Look, it's only a very minor thing in the grandeur scheme of life, but I feel Belgooly AC could have handled it, and the reaction on here, better.
Bottom line fir me, charity or no charity, €15 is too dear for a 4 mile road race.

There is a 5k tomorrow for 15 so this race works out cheaper per mile but 10 would definitely be plenty.

I personally was not in Belgooly St Stephen's Day BUT it us never ever excusable to advertise the cost of a race & Then on the day to expect participants to pay more. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES for such behaviour

Lads let’s draw a line points well made. Belgooly St Stephens day 4 miler is a long tradition, let’s not lose another prestigious event. Great if an official from Belgooly AC would make short statement on lessons learned but let that be it please. People go absolutely mad over Christmas spending without a second thought . Running keeps us all grounded. Seasons greetings to all and let’s chill

But this site didn't advertise the race from what I can see so you wouldn't have got the 12 or 15 euro price details here

John Desmond said...

The price was listed on the race calendar as €12, exactly what was printed on the flyer. Most runners would use the calendar on this site to find out about upcoming races.

Absolutely John I fully agree as I always check in on the race calendar. It is very comprehensive. Belgooly AC have MESSED UP BADLY. What makes it more infuriating and damaging is them not coming forward and making a statement

Looking at some upcoming races it is disappointing to see other clubs now charging € 15 for short distance races - is club running now going to be divided up into those who can regularly pay € 15 to run once or twice a week in races and those who cant ? That is not the spirit of amateur running - at least we have the Cork BHA for those who want to race regularly and within their budget. If clubs want to kill the golden goose, then overcharging is one way to do it.

I personally think 15 euro is too expensive. Just before Christmas the Clon Waterfront charged €32.50 for a 10 km race. They always get the crowds turning up. They only have 3 prizes for male and female.

Anonymous said...

Clon cost me €37.23 for 10k that's ridiculous. Belgooly 15 euro is fine. Especially because money goes to charity. Where as clon is profit making and nothing goes to charity. I find it funny that their was not one negative comment about clons prices and so many here. Seems unfair.

John Desmond said...

There was no negative comments about the Clon 10k price because no-one complained.

€37.23 for a 10k is expensive but at least people knew what it was when entering. Races set out their stall so to speak and it's up to people then whether they want to pay or not.

The problem with Belgooly was that the advertised price and the actual price on the day was different. That and some organisational issues probably got people annoyed.

Half of the profit were taken by the club also so it wasn't a 100% charity event.

Belgooly is an athletics club run by volunteers to train youngsters in athletics. Therefore 100% of the profit goes to charity.

My concern about the inflation in club race prices is about the overall annual cost of taking part in club races - for many low or moderate income runners a 50% increase entry fees has to have an impact on how many races they can take part in and this is particularly so in the case of couples of where a parent and child regularly run in races. The question I would put to clubs is what are their priorities ? Is it to promote and encourage participation by all in races or is it about generating revenue to be spent whatever way they decide to spend it ?
And can making donations to charity be reconciled with pricing even small groups of people out of racing. Personally I dont think those positions can be reconciled but that is only one opinion.

John Desmond said...

Regarding the 50% increase. When the entry fee is online, the entry fee can be pretty much anything. For entries on the day, the preference is to go for multiples of €5 so that there is no delay in having to give out change. It may only take seconds but when there are several hundred people trying to enter a race in a short period of time, those seconds count.

Regarding the other point, a sports club is not a charity.

And still no official comment on here from Belgooly AC. Very poor PR on their part. I was also one of the many runners who had to return back to the car because i always take the right money to check in.
It was only a minor issue lets be fair, but the non-response has annoyed me more than the actual inconvenience at check in.
