First time running this.I did the 10k. I thought it was a excellently run race,very well stewarded with a lovely family athmosphere in the local grounds afterwards. The 10 k course was tough but fair - 5k downhill with 4k uphill (ish) and a fast finish for the last 1k. I would go back next year. Well done to Bweeng, great to see so many good races in North Cork and South Limerick on for the summer.

It's an awful pity a lot of these Races don't award Medals to all who complete

A group of us traveled from Kilworth to take part in the 10k for the first time and without exception, we were all very impressed by the organisation, reception and of course the culinary display. A big well done to you all you should be very proud this evening. The smell of freshly cut hay fermenting in the sun by the way only added to the atmosphere and I've no doubt we'll stop by again next year. Thanks for a great event and a great day!!

Twas the best spread I've seen since me wedding. Hat's off to the trail blazers.

I wouldn't worry about the medals thing. A lot of that kind of thing is rubbishy enough anyway. It's all about your time. Are we that needy as adults that we need a silly medal to tell how us how average we are?

why are people so interested in medals these days? fine for half or full marathon but for a 5k or 10k I think that's a bit much. fantastic turnout btw, conrats to Bweeng Trailblazers, a great achievement!

I'd rather have a well run race that hand out participation medals. Most of them end up in a drawer somewhere so its better to keep the cost down for a needless item.

For €10 this was a super event, cant complain at all. I love collecting the race bling myself but agree with previous comment, its hardly needed for a 10k. Well done the Trailblazers!

A good Race Day in itself is fine but giving Medals for Races is reference to participation in same Race in furure years. For the growing number of people who appreciate Medals awarded for completing Races, no matter what the distance, and display them where they can easily see what they have got to bring home from any particular race.

What a super race put on by Bweeng. Well organised with two seperate race distances on offer. Lots of safety stewards course accurately measures and lovely scenery. What can I say about the spread. Best in Munster hats off to all involved in the baking. It was very obvious that a lot of work was put into this race by Bweeng. Well done guys ill be back next year

Correction for me above I'd rather have a well run race that don't hand out participation medals....

One day people will realise why Medals are awarded for participation and success. It will be smiles all around. Until then those of Ye that don't currently value Medals wont see the point. This is sadly only all too obvious here

Brian Ahern race official here.

Thank you for nice comments. Our mission was to provide the best value for money race we could. For 10euro i believe we delivered. There is several 5ks on every weekend and ive yet to see medals at many of them. Some charge 10euro and more and at some you dont get a cuppa. However we are only concentrating on ourselves.

A chip timed start and finish. Over 2000euro in prize money, category prizes, goody bags and people were actually sent home with cakes and food but this is our 3rd year and for all of that we still only charged 10euro. We have already decided we will have medals next. Pleae note when we originally set out our stall we were not expecting such numbers. As someone said. Value for money was our main aim.

My email is bahernsports@gmail.com I can be contacted at anytime.

Comments like the above are what put me off medals. Even if i won an olympic medal it would mean nothing to me. Theres probably another dozen lying around cork from people that bought one for themselves. Not a complain but to me a medal is just a piece of metal

Great event, very well organised with a beautiful spread of food afterwards. You're after setting a high standard for Donoughmore and Dromahane.

What an amazing race start to finish. So well organised. You could see there was a lot of effort put into this race. The Bweeng Trail Blazers should be so proud of themselves. The amount of food and refreshments afterwards was unbelievable and a little goodie bag at the end of the race was a bonus. Will be back to do this race again next year. I have to say it was the best race I have ever been to so far. Good luck with your next race.

great race, to the organisers save yourselves the cost of the medals, who needs them, I have done hundreds of races over the years and have no idea where they are. I don't need a medal to validate my performance. I laugh when I see people walking around with a cheap medal hanging around their neck strutting like they have just won the Olympics.

Brian & co clearly put in a tremendous amount of work into the day and it's a little irritating to see that some people will complain about a lack of a participation medal. It was a 10 euro race, we got way more than we bargained for. This was a local village race, a very worthy cause supporting the development of the club and we shouldn't expect anything in return other than a well organised race. We had the whole community out cheering, volunteers catering us with a massive spread, sunny weather and a fantastic buzz in the air. It was a memorable event and yet still people aren't happy. It boggles the mind. If people want medals, the price will have to increase accordingly and I'm not entirely sure the majority of participants want that.

Hi guys,
great day, no wonders numbers doubled up in just a year. Tough enough second part of the 10k, but 1st half very fast, great reward at the end. Great organization. before, during and after the race. Not sure the chip timing worked great, my gorss and net time were the same and I definitely cross the line 10-15 seconds after the gun. I see a lot of same gross/net time on the result list. Just one suggestion for improvement, put a sign with direction at the 5k/10k split. The rest is fantastic! Well done! Luigi

Hi,
I wasn't at the race, but I do plenty of races and just wanted to comment on the discussion about medals.
Personally, I don't like getting a medal, as I'd rather get something useful e.g. running buff, t-shirt etc.
Also, I feel there isn't a need for a medal for 5k or 10k race. Fair enough if it's a half marathon, but even then I'd rather get something useful, such as the hat they give out for the Waterford half. Just my opinion, but I think medals are a waste of money.

Hi
I was at the race in Bweeng and I thought it was excellent. It was my first time there and I will visit again next year. The race is great value for money. The atmosphere was fantastic and it seemed that there must be a club member from every house in the village involved as there was so many club tops going around volunteering on the day.
Personally I wouldn't be pushed about a medal. I'd prefer to have the cost the same and see the money going back into the club that supports such great participation in the community.
Well done to Brian and all the team at Bweeng for putting on such a great event.

Does anyone out there want a Medal? This question now needs to be asked as it seems from reading comments above that they don't!!!

John Desmond said...

Just from my own experience, I would estimate that roughly 95% of people that do a 5k do not want a medal. A small number do and there is nothing wrong with that, it's just a different point of view.

If someone has done loads of races then a medal for a 5k means nothing. If however someone does a Couch to 5k programme and then completes a 5k, that medal will mean a lot more. For some, they might have thought they could never run 5 kms so actually doing one is a big deal for them.

Medals for 5k races are probably more suited for the ones where there will be a lot of beginners or very casual runners. e.g. Something like the Women's mini-marathon.

Thanks John. What about the 10K though?

Brian Ahern here again. Some great comments here and feedback to our page also. I am extremely happy and proud of our event. I wont even begin to tell you what went into organising such an event but it was months of hard work. The goody bag, 10euro voucher, protein bar, towel, the bag itself, water and protein milk is well over the 10euro entry fee added to that the huge spread of food and I think it is the best value for money race on the circuit but of course I am going to be biased.

In relation to the medal. Like John said I totally understand how a medal would mean a lot to someone who maybe doing their first 5k. My marathon medals are the only ones I cherish myself but for some people the 5k event is their marathon. However as I already said I am very conscious of keeping the cost down. The person who may do one 5k and looking for a medal has to be considered but also the person who may do two to three races a week and soon enough it becomes very costly for those who enjoy getting to races the most. There is a simple answer and one I will look at for next year. When registering the option to enter for 10euro and not want a medal or pay a bit more if indeed you do want a medal. Then all bases are covered. Simple.

Finally we must be doing a lot right.
2015 = 215participants.
2016 = 256participants.
2017 = 581participants.

The numbers speak for themselves and I would say 99.9% have given huge positive feedback and I don't even take the medal discussion as criticism. The person making the point is entitled to do so and constructive feedback will only help to continue to push this event on. I am surprised that there wasn't more made of our numbers. I read a lot of commentary on races on this site and others and the general theme seems to be that the numbers at races have dropped off due to the saturation of races and introduction of the 5k parkrun.
