Question.....what is the point of chip timing if everyone is given the same start time??? If you started towards the back I'm sure it could have taken 30 seconds plus to cross the start line.

In this case, the use of chip timing allows the organisers cope with over 900 runners. It's very difficult to use manual timing for that many runners in a 5k race.

In an ideal world, it would be nice to have a timing mat at the start line but it's a public road and it's not closed for the race.

They also use the full width of the road for the start so even for someone at the back, the delay shouldn't be anything like 30 seconds.

I began near the back and when I passed the timer 35 seconds had already elapsed. It would be fantastic if they had the timing mat at the start and finish.

Had a great night and very well done

So.....why don't they just close the road for the race? It's not like it's a massive inconvenience for anyone to take Monaghan Road at that time of the evening, in fact it would be much safer for all, 2 cars passed through the crowd at about 7:59, I'm pretty sure they wished they hadn't/couldn't

A race is a race not a time trial. Yes its nice to have a time but i have seen a few incidents where someones chip time was faster than the race winners. The people who come second in a race but have the fastest chip time will even tell you themselves that they just simply were not the best in he race. I think chip times should even be done away with

I think chip timing from start to finish would be great (it' a fast course, everyone wants to do a PB) and that would avoid slower runner to pack up at the front, congesting the stat and potentially creating risk of falls. Regardless of chip timing, road closure should be implemented: as mentioned 2 cars passed through the whole crowd at the start + I remember last year episode when an artic just pulled out of an industrial estate, dangerously cutting the way to the front runners. In a weekday, at that time of the day, closing those roads for 1h should not be a big deal nor too expensive.

The Gardai decide on how much of the road the race has to be run on. They have to leave one side open for traffic, which the organiser has no control over.

well done again to he BHAA and John Buckley for a great race again, for those who made the comments on the times, this isn't the first year that this race has been timed from the gun to the time you run over the finish line,i am guess these comments are from runners who are new to this race, every other BHAA race is gun to finish line (without the chip timimg)i am involved in organizing a BHAA race on the calendar and there is a huge amount of work involved in making the event go to plan, trying to get the road closed by gardai is something that does not need to be added to the list ,for 5 euro for registered runners it represents great value

Move closer the front so

Well said and well done to all involved

Im failing to see why people are having an issue here. All other bhaa races are timed this way. The only difference here is that there's a matt instead of a tunnel at the end.

No need to be so defensive. This person was simply saying what actually happened on the day. I'm sure all new runners to the race would have presumed proper timing but it's not a big issue in the end. It was a great race. Besides it would be difficult to just move closer to the front without being an inconvenience to the other people already lined up.

Please don't if your a slow runner. I started about a third of the way back (20min runner). After the race I went for water and did a cool down and then saw some ppl who had started ahead of me coming over the line at 33 minutes. I'm all for participation but start where you think you will finish in the field would be my recommendation. Who wants to be overtaken by 700 runners in a 5km race?

It took me 7 secs to pass start line..probably 10-12 rows of runners ahead of me and I certainly had no business being any closer to the front. Believe most sane people refrain from going to the front for the rightful fear of holding up elite runners. It boils down to your definition of "chip timed" race. Should probably really only be advertised for races with starting and finishing mat. We all know these BHAA races are great value for money and what is involved in organising them.

So what if someone's chip time is faster than the winner? That's their fault for not starting up the front. The winner was better because they choose a better starting position i.e. they had better tactics. The winners and finishing positions are still decided by the order in which you cross the finish line - chip times don't come into it. And anyway for a very large majority they are treated like time trials. For example, the majority of runners in tomorrows marathon are there to break a time barrier, not to place. I've often heard someone say I want to break 3 hours. I've never heard someone say I want to come 256th.

It would be great if there was a chip mat at the start, but there wasn't and I'd say there never will be. OK, it could have been made a bit clearer that it was finish times only, but perhaps the lack of a mat at the start was a giveaway? And it would also be great of the road could be closed for even just the start or the race. But it wasn't and probably won't ever be, so we just have to get over it. We're lucky enough to have races so close to the city centre. This was a great race as always and one I look forward to every summer. Hats off to the BHAA and John Buckley Sports. Great value for €5 - you wouldn't get that sort of value anywhere else. And no queueing at the end either - pure torture that can be at times!!
As an aside, I seem to recall a race where the timing was done without a mat - perhaps it was some technology used in the gantry at the start and finish line?
