Results of the Great Island 10 Mile Road Race - Sun 17th Apr 2011

A total of 398 runners turned out for this 10 mile road race in Cobh on what was a warm sunny day. That is a good bit down on last years figure of 513. I'm not exactly sure why that might be the case? Perhaps last year had a bit of a novelty factor in that it was the first year of the race? Perhaps the choice of so many races on the calendar? Or was it as someone suggested in a recent comment due to the time of the race? 1pm as opposed to 11am last year?

With an 11am start, people have the option of doing the race and still having the afternoon free to do something else. When it's a 1pm start, the race can become the day's event leaving no time for other things.

The winner of the mens race this year was Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford AC in a time of 52:52. In 2nd place, Colin Merritt of Carrig na bhFear AC finished in 53:08 while last years winner George Waugh finished in 3rd place in 54:30.

The winner of the ladies race was Ann-Marie Holland of Eagle AC in a time of 64:18. Margo Dinan of St.Finbarr's AC finished 2nd in 68:03 with Karen Prendergast finishing 3rd in 68:30.

Did the Great Island 10 today and it was a really nice course with lovely scenery. Great atmosphere about the place!!
Be back to race course next year as I paced a friend today.
Cuppa tea on arrival was very welcoming as I travelled long distance,
Well done to all!!!

Reading the preview it was presented that once we go through mile 4 it was pretty much straight all the way home except for mile 9 drag which we all know. No way, plenty of more drags while not as secvere as mile 3/4 still took the energy. John you need to give a more realistic preview next year, that said I won't forget.
Great race, very warm. I think they may have pulled more numbers if they ran it at 11am . A 1pm is just too late for those with family. I think some of the quality runners stayed away with late start.

What drags? They're only gentle inclines ;o)

Time was the reason for me not making it. 11am next year if at all possible. Have a young family and 1pm makes the day too long. Had done the race in 2010 and was a brilliant race to do, sad to have missed it this year.

Great run, tough hills. Agree with earlier comment 11am would have been a great start time. However well done to all involved, it was exceptionally well organised and plenty of stewarding, water and support along the route.

Great to hear the feedback being new to this we will only but learn. Next years race will hopefully be at 11am. The problem we had last year was Church times so we thought it would make things easier (having 3 in Cobh can cause a lot of problems). Thanks to you all for your support and I do hope to see you all next year to raise money for this worthy cause.
All help or improvements greatly welcomed!!

Must agree and point out that last year was a much easier race at 11am, Yesterday at 11 would have been perfect as it was overcast, 1pm means I'm suffering from sunburn today.

It is however a challenging and very rewarding course, the sense of community is outstanding, hope to be running this one every year.

What a great race! Well organised and the route was lovely. Quite a technical race I think. Only for your preview John I could of found myself in a heap of trouble!
Agree that an 11am start would of suited better. And some stewards/signs on the way into Cobh to tell me where the race registration was located would of helped!! :-)
Loved the race though! Keep it up!!

Its not well down ,its only 15 people , come on , lets be realsitic its still a great turn out , well done to the organisers , great event..
especially at the end with the finish , well laid out compared to cork to cobh , and a great crowd to cheer home.....
the course could have been described a little better though.... still , what a day......

Well done Eamon on a great day. Such a warm atmosphere and the unnofficial water stops were fantastic. It was a tough race but that is what made finishing all the better. We can't run a PB in every race but it is nice to say "I ran 10mls around the hills of Cobh". Long may your charity race continue and hopefully get a better response locally.
How can Ballycotton 10 sell out last month and this race for such a worthy cause 20 mls away fail to get a crowd?

It was 115 down, not 15. 398 this year Vs 513 last year.

did it last year and this year. tough run and very well organised.the finish and the crowd at the finish was equal to a marathon. just 1 point would it be possible to organise 1 small bottled water stop.

From the moment I arrived to the moment I got into my car to return home I could not put praise all involved with the race.I was surprised to see the race centre so in control of everything and lots of helpful and smiling faces. Registration was done very quickly and no delay and I was on my way with all the answers to my queries. The race was a test, but it was a beautiful test with the scenery and the people of Cobh along the route.I would urge people to do this race as you truly are missing out on a well run event.Well done to all involved.

Well done to all involved. It's one of my favourite races (did last year's one as well). Tough little track that is really well organised.

1pm start is probably a touch late, but there's nothing wrong with an experiment as the organiser mentioned.

The finishing clock was hard to see but that's ok

Well done again

Great praise for the organisers, from the build up through to the day all was great. The course was tough for an amatuer runner like me but hey that's what makes the elation of finishing all the better.

Agree with previous comment on the numbers other 10 mile runs get in particular the Ballycotton, would be great to see more come on board for this race next year and also support a very worthy cause so close to all of us!

great day . Traffic was mental on way home with the garden show thing in fota. 11.00 would have been better but then again i would not have got a tan otherwise, Never saw the clock at the end . Loved the course, tough. i will be back next year

Fantastic race, did it last year too. Agreed that 11am would perhaps suit better, but 1pm on the superb day that was in it was ok.

The only thing I would fault is the lack of signage to find the community center. With all the windy hills and one way streets it's tough to find!!

Thanks to all involved in the organisation, very friendly and professional.........

Thanks for your comments and advice.. More signs at Belvelly Bridge will be up for next year... Bottled water may be a bit of a problem "being a charity event", we try to get a lot sponsored and in these economic times found it very difficult this year. Time for next year will be 11am and hopefully we can build on numbers over the coming years. We handed over a cheque for €36,000 last year and this is all down to your support so thank you so much and glad you enjoyed the day. Thanks also John for your support it's very much appreciated!!

John Desmond said...

Hi Roslyn....regarding the water....if you provide bottled water then you'll end with discarded bottles everywhere between that water station and the finish.

The main thing is that there is water available in some form like plasic/paper cups and this suits the vast majority of runners.

I personally did the course with 30 others midweek as we couldn't make the 1'o clock start it on Sunday..I also know of about another 20 others who walked the course before the day.We also submitted our reg and 15euro to the organizers but as we did not come over the line on the day our numbers didn't count but our donation did...11 start would defo be great again..

Dee Carney said...

re ; Francis comment..I also did the run on the Saturday evening and submitted my entry and 15 euro (which by the way is a very reasonable amount when you consider the cause its being raised for..I personally know of 4 more girls who did it earlier on the Sunday..my finish was not recorded either.not sure about the other 4 girls..so I dont think the numbers were down as such.I think the later time may have affected the bigger runners,as any of them I spoke to last year were definitely coming back...
