Weather Forecast for the Kinsale Regatta Race...

This one is a bit of a 'last minute' post! At the moment....2:40pm, the rain is bucketing down and it looks grim for this evening for the Kinsale race and the other 3 races in Munster (Kerry/Clare/Waterford).

However, looking at the satellite picture, there seems to be a chance it might clear from the west?? The 4 red dots represent the location of the races this evening.

The latest shot at 4:30pm suggests that the fine weather should be present for the races in Kerry and Clare but it will probably arrive in Kinsale too late?

Next race.........the Kinsale Regatta 5 mile road race - Fri 24th of July (8pm)

This is the only race on in Cork this weekend and it has a reputation of being one of the fastest 5 mile road races around. It basically starts up on a hill and the rest of the race is either downhill or along the flat with little in the way of hills in the way. If you want a good fast time, this is the one to go for.

"Could jogging be bad for you?"...ask the BBC...

Some of you may have seen on the news last Sunday that President Sarkozy of France "fell ill while jogging". Needless to say, this got the 'armchair experts' going and they posed the question of whether jogging/running was bad for you?

Of course, the answer was no as the overall health benefits outweigh any other issues. They offer the following advice...

1) Don't overdo it - faster than a walk is sufficient for a beginner........fair enough
2) Don't use an iPod when running in the street or road because you need to be attuned to your environment.......there you go, stay attuned
3) Scan the ground in front of you to detect uneven surfaces........??? Considering the state of the roads around Cork, if we were to 'scan ahead', we would probably need to run on our hands and knees ;o)

Looking ahead to upcoming races for the rest of the year...

While there are still plenty of short races coming up, there are a few long ones that people might be interested in training for...

1) Cork Half-Marathon....This 13.1 mile race is on Sunday, the 13th of September (6-7 weeks away). The route starts and finishes in Blarney and follows some hilly country roads to the north of the town. If you are comfortable running 5-7 miles at the moment, you still have time to get ready for this one. If you fancy something more scenic, there is the Dingle Half-Marathon on the previous day (12th).

2) Cork BHAA 'Cork to Cobh' 15 mile road race....This one is on Sunday, the 4th of October (9-10 weeks away). This is a novel race in that you start in Cork City and finish in the town of Cobh in Cork Harbour. This main road is always too busy to walk on let alone run on so this is the only time of year you can do so and this makes this annual race a unique event. As with all Cork BHAA events, the entry fee will be very modest unlike some other long distance races around the country which are very expensive.

3) Dublin Marathon.......This is the big one, the main Marathon race in the country for the year. This year, the 26.2 mile race is likely to attract around 10,000 entries and all will be attempting the Marathon distance, no relay event in this one. The Dublin Marathon takes place on the Bank Holiday Monday, the 26th of October which is roughly 12-13 weeks away. If you are comfortable doing 10-12 mile runs at present then you still have time to get ready.

There are one or two other events but the ones listed above are the main ones of interest for runners in Cork.

Any new runner who has been running for a while will know that for the short local races, there is no real challenge in covering the distance, it's more about how fast they can run. With the long races, you need to prepare for them. There's a fine balance between speed and trying to complete the race. If you are interested in trying one of the races above, now is the time to start training.

Races this weekend / Appeal for Marathon DVD...

Item 1.

While there are no races in Cork this weekend, there is a 10 mile race up in Ballynonty in Tipperary on Sunday. It's a very low key event and usually attracts a small field. From Cork, it basically is a trip up on the Dublin road as far as the Horse&Jockey and turn right. With all of the new roads, it's not such a long journey anymore. Item 2.

Many of you may recall an item I had here a while back about John Quigley of Eagle AC running in the Cork City Marathon Relay with a special Cancer survivors team. Well after the event, Setanta Sports interviewed John as part of their special programme that they had covering the Cork Marathon. This programme was broadcast several times on the Setanta Sports channel and was up on the Eircom website for a while as well.

Results of the Churchtown South 5 Mile Road Race...Thurs 23rd July 2009
Another race, another huge turnout. This year, the numbers at the Churchtown South 5 Mile exceeded all expectations with 473 runners taking part. That compares with 323 in 2008 and 269 in 2007, both record years. While it's great to see the large numbers, they do however bring their own problems such as...
a) Getting everyone to the start on time so that the race can start at the correct time...
b) Queues at the entry due to the large numbers...
c) Backlog in the finishing chute due to the sheer volume of runners finishing...

In a race of 200 people, many of these problems don't appear or can be handled easily. When the numbers are closer to 500, it's a different story. One problem last night was with runners arriving too late and running without numbers. This in turn causes major delays in the finishing chute....as if they didn't have enough to deal with already.

It might be as well to remind people that everyone should make an effort to get to the races early. If you are not sure where the venue is then leave earlier so that you can find it in time.

Preview of the Churchtown South 5 Mile Road Race - Thurs 23rd of July (8pm)
The 3rd race in the Ballycotton Summer series takes place next Thurdsay evening, the 23rd of July at 8pm. Last year, they got 323 runners for this race. With the high numbers at present, I'd expect that they will get close to 400 for this one.

Directions...If you are new to the local race scene, try the following route. From Cork, take the usual route to Ballycotton (R629...shown above in Yellow). When you get to the centre of Cloyne, the main road takes a 90 degree left. You need to take the turn off which is straight ahead past the old round tower. Just stay on this road (...shown above in Orange), follow the signposts for Ballycotton and you will end up in Churchtown South. Once you get there, follow the stewards instructions regarding parking.

Entries...The event centre for this race is the small community hall which is located next to the road junction on the Cloyne side of the village.

Here is a note from the organisers regarding entries...
A total of 279 have run in both races so far - 202 men and 77 women.
The race number signifies your overall position in the Series after two races. For men, No 1 is the overall leader and so on down to number 202.
The women start at 301 and go down to 377. There will be two tables as in Shanagarry, one for numbers 1 to 150; the other for numbers 151 to 202 (men) and 301 to 377 (women).
A few lists will be displayed as usual for people to check their numbers before approaching the tables.
For new entrants (this includes those who might have ran one of the two races) there will be two extra tables taking entries as normal. Entry fee €5, people might try and have the correct amount.
Weather permitting, we will have a field for parking. The quickest route is straight through Cloyne and follow the black and yellow arrows. Please arrive early so that the race can start on time.

Course...It is roughly 2 laps of a 2.5 mile course. When you run the course, you would think that it should be a fast course as there seem to be very few hills. However, while there are no obvious steep hills like Ballyandreen or Shanagarry, there are some long drags in it which have the same net effect. For my money, it is as tough a course as either of the first two in the series.

Obviously Jorge is using a pretty good camera but there's more to it than that when taking a good photo. You need to have a 'good eye' for a photo. It's simple to point and shoot with a camera.......knowing where and when to shoot is what really makes the difference.

Results of the Banteer 5km road race...Sun 19th July 2009

This was a brand new race on the calendar and 60 runners turned out for it. No doubt, a good few people who ran in Donoughmore last Friday decided to give this one a skip. That's the problem with races this time of year...it's hard to find a date which doesn't clash with or is very close to some other event.

Preview of the Banteer 5k....Sun 19th July, 2009

This is a brand new race on the race calendar and takes place in the village of Banteer at 3:30pm. I presume that the course is much the same as the one used for the County Roads Championships a few years back? If that's the case then the route is pretty flat and it should be a course for fast times.

Getting there........If you are west of Cork City, then the best route is probably to take the R579 road for Kanturk from the Ballincollig bypass and go out past the Anglers Rest. See the earlier post for directions for Donoughmore....it's the same road.

Otherwise, the best route is to take the N20 up to Mallow and at the roundabout, take the N72 west for Killarney. The turnoff for Banteer is a few kms out this road.

Results of the Donoughmore 7 Mile road race - Fri 17th July 2009
There was a fine turn out last night for the Donoughmore 7 with 290 runners taking part on what was a nice summer evening. While the numbers were not as high as they might be for say a 5k race, it was still nearly a 40% increase on last year's figure. As always, the local club put on a fine race yet again with a fine spread in the hall afterwards. In a summer full of short road races, this race for me on the nice quiet roads around Donoughmore is one of the best.

Preview of the Donoughmore 7 Mile Road Race - Fri 17th of July (8pm)
The 27th Donoughmore 7 Mile road race will be held next Friday evening at 8pm. While it is unlikely to attract the huge numbers that you might find at say a local 5k race, this one for me is one of the best on the race calendar.

So what's the attraction of this race and why would I rate it as one of the best?

1) If you look at the race calendar, there are loads of 5k, 4 mile and 5 mile races. If you miss one, you'll catch another one next week. The Donoughmore 7 is a challenging race over a unique distance.

2) While the route is tough, it is on nice quite country roads. For most of it, you are over 6-700 feet above sea level, higher than Cork Airport and you have extensive views of the local countryside.

3) The entry fee of €10 includes a 'T-shirt'. I put the T-shirt in brackets because last year, the 'T-shirt' turned out to be a proper running top rather than a typical cotton T-shirt, something you'd expect to pay €20 or more for in a sports shop.

For anyone who has not done this race before, here are the directions...

Directions...Donoughmore is about 15 miles NW of Cork City. If you are coming out the Ballincollig bypass or the Carrigrohane straight, look for directions for Nad / Banteer / Kanturk. If you follow the signposts, you should end up on the R579 road. Stay on this road for about 10 miles and keep a lookout for the turn off right to Donoughmore. The village is about 2 miles off the R579 road. See map above. If in doubt, click on the link below for the course map and zoom out and adjust to examine the route.

Course....First of all, it is a tough enough course. Plenty of hills but nothing too serious. Some people may find 7 miles to be a bit long but it is only three quarters of a mile beyond the 10 km distance so it's not so bad. The race is on quiet country roads and if you get a nice sunny Summers evening, there are nice views of the Boggeragh Mountains nearby.

The first 2 miles or so are on a nice quite narrow country road. A few little drags but nothing bad. The next 2.5 miles are along the R579 road which can be busy but the road is mostly wide and straight so it should be ok. There is a lot of downhill running here so expect it to be fast. The last 2 miles of the race are the real test with a largely uphill drag to the finish. There are no serious hills but you are climbing for most of it. If you have gone out too fast, this is where you'll get caught. Keep it in mind, keep something in reserve when you are doing those first 5 miles.

They usually get about the 200 mark at this race. Entry fee is €10 but for that, you get a 'T-Shirt' and there is an impressive array of prizes on offer for all the different categories. Last year, they got 208 entries (2007=218) and if the weather is fine, they should set a new record this year.

Overall.........a challenging race over a nice countryside circuit. Not to be missed.

This for me is the best photo of the lot. It's shows the overall winner of the race, James McCarthy around the 2 mile mark. As the subject of the photo, he is in focus. The rest of the field stretched out behind him down the hill is out of focus but provides the context for the photo.

The photo also appears to make that incline look pretty steep!

Results of the Corkbeg 5 Mile Road Race...9th July 2009 (Updated Sun 12th July)

The Corkbeg 5 near Whitegate in east Cork was usually just a small race attracting just local runners. Not so long ago, the numbers were always down around the 50-70 mark. More recently, the numbers have been 101 in 2007 and 87 in 2008. This year however, there has been a substantial increase with 158 taking part, a figure that would have been considered normal for one of the more mainstream races a few years back. What's even more remarkable about that figure is that the race was held just 24 hours after the Cork BHAA 'EMC' road race in Ovens which attracted several hundred runners.

While it is great to get photos of the road races, watching a video of a race conveys a lot more information. You can see running style, what the gaps were like, how 'comfortable' you look and so on.
