Video........Ironman Finish - 1997
Now that we are getting closer to Monday and the Dublin City Marathon, I think it might be time for a few posts as I know that a big contingent from Cork are making the trip up.

As anyone who has done a Marathon will know, the 20 mile mark is often called the Half Way Point! It can seem as hard to finish the last 10k as it did to run the first 20 miles. So, for those of you going to Dublin, just remember this video when you are out around the 23 mile mark and feeling exhausted. It show 2 finishers in the 1997 Ironman Triathlon. They had just swam 2.4 miles, cycled 112 miles and then ran a full Marathon of 26.2 miles.

This is one incredible video...

Hi John,
Can you believe it....woke up last Monday morning with a sore throat. I've got a headcold since. Do you think I should run on Monday?

That's really your call. I'd say make the decision on Sunday morning. If you still feel sick, the Marathon will be a horrible experience. It's hard enough to run 26.2 miles when you are healthy but when your body is depleted after a cold?!?!? Lots of liquids, lots of Vitamin C (fruit) but I wouldn't be too hopeful.
Sometimes you just have to make the right decision and just say no.

I had the same thing last Monday....3000 - 4000mg of Vit C a day, throat spray and litres of water seem to have pushed it away. You need to decide whether your goal will be affected by how you feel. If it is your first marathon and you just want to complete it irrespective of the time then you might decide to do it (after all that training!) If you are pushing a performance barrier for a PB then you may just end up worse off and taking a while to recover. Good luck whatever your decision.
