Notice : Dan Byrne Memorial 5k in Doneraile Park - Fri 31st May 2019

This 5k race in Doneraile Park in North Cork is always a popular one with runners. Organised by Mallow AC, it is a lovely setting for a race. While it's described as a trail race, it is in reality mostly on narrow roads and paths within Doneraile Park. It would be wrong to think that it's some sort of cross country race or that you need to run through mud or long grass.

The start time is 7pm and registration starts in Nagle Rice school from 5.30pm.  It costs €10 to enter with a family offer of 2 adults and 2 kids for €20

Road Closures for the 2019 Cork City Marathon

The road closures and times are similar to previous years.

From the organisers...Full list of road closures and travel advice Sun 2nd June 2019

Travel Advice: There will be major traffic restrictions throughout the city on race day but the general advice is to use the city’s Ring and Link roads when possible. You can drive into the city centre, but allow plenty of time to get to your start line. Contra-flows will operate in the Jack Lynch Tunnel, on the South Ring Road to Mahon and on the South City Link.

The Park & Ride service from the Black Ash centre, on the South City Link (N27), into the city centre will operate every 10 minutes from 07.30 to 19.15. The service costs €5 for the day. Participants and spectators are urged to use this facility and leave your car outside the city centre. The bus will bring you into the centre, a minute’s walk from the City Hall.

ROAD RE-OPENING SCHEDULE (times are approximate)

Please note the Marathon (8.30am) and Half Marathon (10.15am) start times.

Road closures begin at 5.30am on St Patrick’s Street and adjoining streets. All other closures are put in place from 7.30am.

Tipp athlete Aimee Hayde breaks Sonia O'Sullivan's 32 year old schools record for 800m

Someone sent this piece on to me.

From the Nenagh Guardian...."Aimee Hayde enhanced further her status as a rising star of Irish athletics by breaking a 32 year old record set by legend Sonia O'Sullivan at the Irish Life Health Munster Schools Track & Field Championships in Cork IT last weekend.

The Newport AC athlete, representing St Mary's Secondary School Newport won the intermediate girls 800m on Saturday in a time of 2.07.74, which was also a European Youth Olympics qualification mark.

Her time was also over three seconds faster than the Munster schools record of 2.10.09 set by Sonia O'Sullivan in 1987. "

Tramore Valley Park opens to the public!

Finally! After many false dawns, the Tramore Valley Park in Cork City has opened to the public.

It will now be open 7 days a week from 8:30am.

I understand that several hundred car park spaces have also been added which surely makes the return of the weekly 5k parkrun much more likely.

The one serious issue is the lack of access from Half Moon Lane off the South Douglas Road. This is an obvious access point for a lot of people living in that area and not everyone can or will drive there.

With the Half Moon entrance closed, it is more likely that people will try to access the park by running across the South Link Road while the traffic light are red.

The entrance from Douglas is by the Gaeilscoil on what is a noisy but safe tarmac walkway.

Results & Photos of the Cork BHAA John Buckley Sports 5k - Tues 21st May 2019

There were big numbers out in force for this years John Buckley Sports 5k in Cork City with 958 taking part. As can be seen from the chart above, that is the third year in a row that the numbers have increased.

One of the unique things about the numbers are just how many fast runners there were. A total of 221 finished under 20 minutes which is pretty amazing.

Just hang on to your race number and present it in the shop to avail of the 20% discount. It will apply to any purchases in their shop which is across from the Opera House in the heart of Cork City. Needless to say, the amount you save with the discount may well exceed the race entry so they are well worth getting. Note that the discount is not restricted to just one item. Results of the Bay Run Half-Marathon & 10k - Sun 19th May 2019

Another race from the weekend....I almost forgot about this one! :o)

The annual Bay Run Half-Marathon in Bantry was on this year on Sunday the 19th of May 2019. As can be seen from the chart above, this was one of the main half-marathons on the calendar a few years ago when it got well over a thousand runners.

Since 2011, the numbers have been in decline and this year was the lowest ever dropping below 400 for the first time between the two races.

Tramore Valley Park to open on Wed 22nd of May 2019

Update Mon 20th May 2019... This is a photo taken last week of the works under way at the Tramore Valley Park in preparation for the opening on Wednesday the 22nd of May 2019.

Over on the left in the background is the existing car park. Note however in the foreground all the new car park spaces.

Are there enough to cater for a return of the weekly 5k parkrun???

*****

After many false dawns, it finally looks as if the Tramore Valley Park is about to open! It will be
officially opened by Lord Mayor Mick Finn on Wednesday May 22nd 2019.

The City Council will also name the new 2.5 km looped walkway in the park after Rob Heffernan.

As you can see from the photo above, a new outdoor gym has been constructed and it is now ready for use.

Will the parkrun return? The last time the 5k parkrun was in Tramore Valley Park, there was none in Ballincollig and the Glen. With those up and running, that is going to limit the numbers at Tramore Valley Park if it makes a return.

As for when? Maybe they'll want to see what the usage of the park is like first on a Saturday morning before deciding. Surely though it's only a matter of time?
