Results of the Banteer 5km road race...Sun 19th July 2009

This was a brand new race on the calendar and 60 runners turned out for it. No doubt, a good few people who ran in Donoughmore last Friday decided to give this one a skip. That's the problem with races this time of year...it's hard to find a date which doesn't clash with or is very close to some other event.

Preview of the Banteer 5k....Sun 19th July, 2009

This is a brand new race on the race calendar and takes place in the village of Banteer at 3:30pm. I presume that the course is much the same as the one used for the County Roads Championships a few years back? If that's the case then the route is pretty flat and it should be a course for fast times.

Getting there........If you are west of Cork City, then the best route is probably to take the R579 road for Kanturk from the Ballincollig bypass and go out past the Anglers Rest. See the earlier post for directions for Donoughmore....it's the same road.

Otherwise, the best route is to take the N20 up to Mallow and at the roundabout, take the N72 west for Killarney. The turnoff for Banteer is a few kms out this road.

Results of the Donoughmore 7 Mile road race - Fri 17th July 2009
There was a fine turn out last night for the Donoughmore 7 with 290 runners taking part on what was a nice summer evening. While the numbers were not as high as they might be for say a 5k race, it was still nearly a 40% increase on last year's figure. As always, the local club put on a fine race yet again with a fine spread in the hall afterwards. In a summer full of short road races, this race for me on the nice quiet roads around Donoughmore is one of the best.

Preview of the Donoughmore 7 Mile Road Race - Fri 17th of July (8pm)
The 27th Donoughmore 7 Mile road race will be held next Friday evening at 8pm. While it is unlikely to attract the huge numbers that you might find at say a local 5k race, this one for me is one of the best on the race calendar.

So what's the attraction of this race and why would I rate it as one of the best?

1) If you look at the race calendar, there are loads of 5k, 4 mile and 5 mile races. If you miss one, you'll catch another one next week. The Donoughmore 7 is a challenging race over a unique distance.

2) While the route is tough, it is on nice quite country roads. For most of it, you are over 6-700 feet above sea level, higher than Cork Airport and you have extensive views of the local countryside.

3) The entry fee of €10 includes a 'T-shirt'. I put the T-shirt in brackets because last year, the 'T-shirt' turned out to be a proper running top rather than a typical cotton T-shirt, something you'd expect to pay €20 or more for in a sports shop.

For anyone who has not done this race before, here are the directions...

Directions...Donoughmore is about 15 miles NW of Cork City. If you are coming out the Ballincollig bypass or the Carrigrohane straight, look for directions for Nad / Banteer / Kanturk. If you follow the signposts, you should end up on the R579 road. Stay on this road for about 10 miles and keep a lookout for the turn off right to Donoughmore. The village is about 2 miles off the R579 road. See map above. If in doubt, click on the link below for the course map and zoom out and adjust to examine the route.

Course....First of all, it is a tough enough course. Plenty of hills but nothing too serious. Some people may find 7 miles to be a bit long but it is only three quarters of a mile beyond the 10 km distance so it's not so bad. The race is on quiet country roads and if you get a nice sunny Summers evening, there are nice views of the Boggeragh Mountains nearby.

The first 2 miles or so are on a nice quite narrow country road. A few little drags but nothing bad. The next 2.5 miles are along the R579 road which can be busy but the road is mostly wide and straight so it should be ok. There is a lot of downhill running here so expect it to be fast. The last 2 miles of the race are the real test with a largely uphill drag to the finish. There are no serious hills but you are climbing for most of it. If you have gone out too fast, this is where you'll get caught. Keep it in mind, keep something in reserve when you are doing those first 5 miles.

They usually get about the 200 mark at this race. Entry fee is €10 but for that, you get a 'T-Shirt' and there is an impressive array of prizes on offer for all the different categories. Last year, they got 208 entries (2007=218) and if the weather is fine, they should set a new record this year.

Overall.........a challenging race over a nice countryside circuit. Not to be missed.

This for me is the best photo of the lot. It's shows the overall winner of the race, James McCarthy around the 2 mile mark. As the subject of the photo, he is in focus. The rest of the field stretched out behind him down the hill is out of focus but provides the context for the photo.

The photo also appears to make that incline look pretty steep!

Results of the Corkbeg 5 Mile Road Race...9th July 2009 (Updated Sun 12th July)

The Corkbeg 5 near Whitegate in east Cork was usually just a small race attracting just local runners. Not so long ago, the numbers were always down around the 50-70 mark. More recently, the numbers have been 101 in 2007 and 87 in 2008. This year however, there has been a substantial increase with 158 taking part, a figure that would have been considered normal for one of the more mainstream races a few years back. What's even more remarkable about that figure is that the race was held just 24 hours after the Cork BHAA 'EMC' road race in Ovens which attracted several hundred runners.

While it is great to get photos of the road races, watching a video of a race conveys a lot more information. You can see running style, what the gaps were like, how 'comfortable' you look and so on.

13th Annual Corkbeg '5' Road Race

Preview of the Corkbeg 5 mile road race...Thurs 9th July 2009
This 5 mile road race takes place in Corkbeg in East Cork at 8pm. Corkbeg is located about 1 km from the village of Whitegate on the Eastern side of the harbour. See the map above. If you are coming from Cork, take the N25 East and at the roundabout on the Midleton bypass, take the 3rd exit and keep going South to Whitegate. As you enter the village, you first pass the ESB power station and then the village itself. Just take the next small right hand turn and the start is a few hundred metres up this road. Entries for this race will be in the small wooden building just alongside the Pitch & Putt club. Course...The start and finish point for this race is at the gates of the Oil Refinery. The first mile is very fast. You are running down a gentle downhill slope from the start all the ways until you get to Whitegate. The 1 mile mark is just where you start running uphill as you leave the village. Watch out for the stewards instructions here as you will need to cross to the other side of the road around here. The 2nd mile is a tough mile as you continue to run uphill past the ESB power station and then take a right turn and up an even steeper section to the 2 mile mark. The 3rd mile is a fast one. The road flattens out after 2 miles and soon, it drops sharply back down to the main road and then left with a flat section to the 3 mile mark. The 4th mile is more or less flat until you reach the 4 mile mark just after the power station. The 5th and final mile has a bit of a sting in the tail at the end as you need to run back up that gentle incline to the finish at the oil refinery gates.Overall, a 5 mile race with a few drags but nothing heart stopping ;o)

Results of the Cork BHAA 'EMC' 5km road race...8th July 2009
Another record crowd turned out for this road race in Ovens near Ballincollig. Judging by the start and the queues out the door afterwards, it was obvious that the number was big. According to the results, a total of 414 runners turned out which compares to 355 for last year. Full credit to the Cork BHAA for putting on a fine well organised race and to the runners in EMC for a fine spread afterwards in the hall.

Preview of the Cork BHAA' EMC' 5 km road race.......Wed 8th July 2009 (8pm)
Before we look at the preview of this race, it might be worth looking back at some of the numbers attending this race over the years and how dramatic the recent increase in numbers attending races has been.

EMC 5k race........

2004 = 208

2005 = 183

2006 = 213

2007 = 261

2008 = 355

2009 = ???

It seems probable that this year's race will attract in excess of 400 runners, about twice the numbers 3 to 4 years ago. While the increased numbers are welcome, they also create a lot of problems. Twice the numbers mean that the whole entry procedure is slower, the start area is crowded, road safety is more of an issue, twice the number of finishers to be checked and recorded, longer race results and so on.

In another recent post, someone left a comment asking what could they do to help out?

Here are some suggestions....

1) Try to get to the races early. Enter early so that there isn't a delay in getting the race started. Remember that there may be daylight or traffic issues to contend with so the organisers will usually want to start the race on time.

2) If you aren't running in the race, consider offering your services. You can help out as a race steward, with the entries, at the finish line and so on.

On to the review...

The sign on for this race is at the Eire Og GAA grounds in Killumney, Ovens.

Directions...If you coming from the City, take the Ballincollig bypass. At the end of the bypass, you pass the EMC plant on your left, the road narrows and you then need to take the next left. You will see a pub at this junction ('Desmonds Bar'). About 800 metres later, you come to the village of Killumney with an old church straight ahead. Take the right here and the Eire Og grounds are on the right just up the road. There is usually plenty of parking inside the grounds. See the map below. The Red mark shows the finish where the GAA grounds are.

Entries...As per normal at BHAA races, there will be 2 queues, one for registered (€5) and one for non-registered runners (€7). Note that the start line is about a mile from the GAA grounds so you need to enter early and give yourself plenty of time. The start of the race is 8pm.

Course...The course is basically a one and a half lap loop. The start is 1 mile from the GAA grounds so you can use this as part of your warm up. Just follow everyone else and head for the start which is on the N22 Cork to Macroom road. Ok, it's not the nicest of starts with the heavy traffic but as soon as the race starts, you are back on to quiet roads again after a few hundred metres. When you do the 2nd loop, you will be using the hard shoulder which is fine as the crowd will have thinned out by then.

2 points to note......

1) The only hill / drag is near the road junction, just before the 1 and 3 mile mark. This is shown on the map as the point on the bottom left corner (South-West)

2) When you re-join the N22 near the pub (top right corner), the hard shoulder is very narrow here for about 100-200 metres and you need to be careful.

Another record month for website traffic...

A few weeks back, I put up a post about a new record for traffic to this website with 15,631 hits in the month of May. Much of this traffic was no doubt due to the interest in the Cork City Marathon. As expected, this high level of traffic continued into June and with the record numbers at the local races, a new peak has been recorded.

The Runnng in Cork website got almost 19,000 hits in the month of June which is huge. Consider that 12 months ago, the traffic level was around the 10,000 mark which at that time was exceptional.

4 Mile road race this evening in south Limerick.......
The Annual Dromcollogher 4 Mile Road Race is on this evening Monday 6th July 2009. Considering that it is just over the Cork/Limerick border, it might be of interest to anyone living in north Cork. If you are not sure where it is, try turning off left in Buttevant and take the R522 for Liscarroll and Dromcollogher. Race starts at 7.45pm.

Road Running Workshop.....16th July

I received the following mail from Shane Simcox of Mallow AC who is putting on a running workshop if anyone is interested...

Races this weekend....Fri 3rd July 2009

There are 2 races this weekend in Munster, both of them on Friday evening.

Kerry........the Killarney Summerfest 5 km fun run takes place at 7pm.

Tipperary........the 'Champion Kiely' 5 km road race takes place in Ballyneale at 7:30pm in south-east Tipperary.

Results of the Cork BHAA 'Stryker' 4 Mile road race...1st July 2009

This race in Carrigtwohill in East Cork took place in dull but dry conditions. It had been raining for most of the day, stopped for a few hours in the evening for the race and then started again once it got dark.

Looking at the numbers, they got 456 this year...a 43% increase. Once again, a big increase in numbers.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Stryker' 4 Mile Road Race - Wed 1st July (8pm)
This 4 mile road race takes place in the East Cork town of Carrigtwohill at 8pm on Wednesday, the 1st of July. Registration is in the Community Hall near the Eastern end of the town. If you are travelling from Cork, you have a choice of 2 slips roads to take for Carrigtwohill off the main N25 road as shown above. You can see exactly where the Community Hall is by clicking HERE and using the +/- buttons to zoom in and out. Try changing the 'View' to Satellite or Map to see if it makes it any clearer.
As per normal at BHAA races, there will be 2 queues in the hall. One for registered runners (€5 entry) and one for non-registered runners (€7). The start point for the race is about 400 metres away.

The course...From the start on the main road in the town, you head back towards the Community Centre but before you reach it, you take a sharp left along a straight stretch of road away from centre of the town. It is a section where you need to be careful as the field is still very bunched. However, by the time you get to the railway bridge, the field should have begun to thin. There is a sharp little incline at this bridge but once you are over it, it flattens out as you turn off left at the next road junction. Now the road begins to climb slowly to the 1 mile mark. After that, you turn off left and head West. The 2nd mile involves plenty of flat running with some downhill running also as you lose the height you gained earlier. After the 2 mile mark, it's pretty flat and soon you turn left onto a long straight. Up a slight incline at the end and out onto the old main road and the 3 mile mark. You are then running inside the hard shoulder of the main road. For the last mile, you carry on towards the small roundabout and back into the town. The finish is just past the entrance for an industrial estate.

Overall...A reasonably flat fast course with no major hills as such. Last year, they got 320 entries which was only 1 up on the 2007 figure. With the current record numbers attending races, I'd expect that the 400 mark may well be broken. Try and get there early so that entry backlog can be cleared and the race can start on time.

Extra information........With the increased numbers at the road races, the finish line are getting very congested, especially in the shorter races. One tried and trusted way of dealing with the backlog is to have 2 finishing chutes. As soon as 1 is full, a 2nd one is opened. It's important that runners should stay in the finishing chute so that their number can be recorded and only leave at the end.
