No Cork BHAA UCC 10k in 2023

I just got word that the Cork UCC 10k will not be going ahead this year. It had been scheduled on the Cork BHAA calendar to go ahead on Sunday the 2nd of April 2023.

The last time this race was held was back in 2019.

No more details at present.

Guest Post: RUNNING (AND RACING) AROUND THE LEE ROAD-STRAIGHT ROAD CIRCUIT... by John Walshe

The Lee Road / Straight Road circuit is a well known running route to runners in Cork and is home to one of the oldest road races on the calendar. In this guest post, John Walshe of Ballycotton looks back at some of the races on this route.

RUNNING (AND RACING) AROUND THE LEE ROAD-STRAIGHT ROAD CIRCUIT (John Walshe)

Last Sunday would have seen the 38th UCC Staff road race (now known as the Carmel Lynch Memorial) taking place over 10km on the Lee Road-Straight Road circuit. But, of course like all other events, it too has fallen victim to the dreaded COVID-19 virus. So maybe it’s an opportune time to have a look back to a few of the races that this popular route has hosted over the years.

Running out the Lee Road, turning left past the ‘Angler’s’ and then hitting the two-mile straight with the County Hall seeming like an never-ending oasis in the distance has always been a popular excursion for Corkonians.

Back before the first running boom, for two of the top Cork marathoners of that era it provided the staple diet of their weekly training. Both Jack O’Leary and Donal Burke worked in the County Hall and every lunchtime the duo would cover the hilly circuit which, along with the mandatory weekend long run, produced times in the 2:25-2:35 range.

As a regular race route, it has been used extensively for the past 30 to 40 years. But back in July of 1951, for the one and only time, a road race was part of the Cork City Sports which took in the circuit. This was over eight miles and started at the Grand Parade Monument. It proceeded out Washington Street and the Western Road, then out the Carrigrohane Straight before turning right onto the Lee Road, past St Josephs Hospital at six miles and the Mental Hospital to finish at the Gaelic Grounds.

On that occasion just 13 runners toed the line and it was a handicap race, with most of that small field starting off two to two-and-a-half minutes ahead of the scratch man, Joe West of the Rising Sun club. West was born and reared in Carrigaline and started off his athletics career with the local Owenabui club, winning the Cork senior cross-title on three occasions.

In 1947, he went to England and joined Coventry Godiva Harriers before going on to represent Ireland in the marathon at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. This was the race famously won by Emil Zátopek after the Czech had already taken gold in the 5000m and 10,000m. On that July evening almost 70 years ago, the large attendance at the Mardyke were able to witness one of their own, an Olympian marathoner, come into the Gaelic Grounds as winner of the eight-mile race. West’s time was 45 minutes and 44 seconds and in second place was Ted Geary from Ballymore near Cobh.

The first race of the modern era was probably the Our Lady’s Hospital (Cork BHAA) promotion of 1983. This was held over six-and-a-half miles, one full circuit starting and finishing near the hospital entrance. Four years later, as the attached results show, it had been shortened to 10km with the winner, Billy Horgan, recording the impressive time of 30:35.

Around the early to mid-80s a half-marathon took place here on a number of occasions. The 1982 race saw victories going to Kerry athlete John Griffin (66:38) and Leevale’s Marie Buckley (85:33) as over 400 finished the two demanding laps.

Over two winters a women’s-only series of races – following on from the first Evening Echo Mini-Marathon – were held around the city. The March 1984 10km on the Lee Road-Straight Road was won by Carmel Lyons (now Parnell) in 38:40 from Joan Hough (38:55) and Lucy O’Donohue (39:00). Although she didn’t run on that occasion, it is recalled that a 15-year-old Sonia O’Sullivan did take part in a number of those events.

A popular final ‘blow-out’ before the Dublin Marathon as it was usually held a week or two before the big day was the Rehab 10km. This took place on a Sunday afternoon for around 12 years, starting in 1984. On another occasion, the Cork BLE 10km championship saw the runners finishing with a lap of the Mardyke track, making it slightly over distance!

The first UCC Staff 10km races started just before the recently refurbished Shakey Bridge and finished near the County Hall. One of the results attached (only first page) (shown below) is from 1992 and saw victory going to Garrett Barry in a time of 30:44. This proved to be the start of a great summer for the North Cork athlete. He would go on to win the BLE Senior 1500m that July in 3:47.30 along with ending Liam O’Brien’s decade-long winning streak in the Ballycotton five-mile races at Churchtown South with a one-second victory in 24:32.

It is also worth recalling that for a few years in the mid-1990s the UCC Staff race was held over 5km, comprising of a number of laps around the Mardyke Walk and Western Road.

Again, for interest, the results of the 1994 race are attached (results HERE) where the winners were Tommy Moloney from Tipperary – a 3:54.68 miler - who got the verdict ahead of Garrett Barrett with both given the same time of 15:04.

Results & photos of the Cork BHAA UCC 10km road race...Sun 2nd Apr 2017

A total of 472 runners turned out for this years Cork BHAA UCC 10km road race on the Lee Road / Straight Road circuit in Cork City. As you can see from the chart above, the numbers were down a tiny bit but it was only 11 lower than 2016.

One thing of interest for the race this year was that there is now a 5k parkrun in Ballincollig on the Saturday whereas last year, there was none. Despite the fact that the parkrun is now getting 250+ runners per week, it didn't seem to have much impact on the Cork BHAA race.

Results & Photos of the Cork BHAA UCC 10k road race - Sun 3rd Apr 2016

The annual Cork BHAA UCC 10km road race was held on the usual Lee Road / Straight Road circuit on Sunday the 3rd of April 2016. Conditions for the race were pretty good with a small bit of sunshine at times. In fact, it was pretty lucky in that there was rain earlier in the morning and a heavy drizzle returned in the early afternoon.

This race consistently gets good numbers every year so it was always going to be interesting to see how it would hold up against previous years. In 2016, a total of 483 runners took part which was down 9.5% on the 2015 figure.

Despite the fact that it was lower than the previous three years, the figure is still very good for a road race in Cork.

As you can see from the chart above, the UCC race used to get about 150 runners in the early 2000's before the running boom started in about 2006. The numbers have grown since then until they leveled off around 2012.

The one change this year was that the entry fee for non-reg runners went from €8 to €10. Did this have an impact? I'm be inclined to think it didn't. We'll have to wait until next year to see if this is a trend of just a blip.

Results of the Cork BHAA' UCC' 10 km road race - Sun 11th Apr 2010....(Updated Tues 20th Apr)
There were several races on yesterday in the country and I think no matter where you went, it was hot and sunny. I missed the UCC race as I was up in Connemara and there wasn't a cloud in the sky up there. Those that went to Kilnaboy in Co.Clare for the last race in the John Buckley Sport Munster Ten-Mile Spring Classics series had to endure very hot conditions as well. And from what I hear, the UCC race was no different with very warm conditions.

A total of 426 runners turned up for the 10k which for a local race is very good. As to whether the numbers are dropping at races this year compared to last, the one was up! 2008 was 336, 2009 was 404 so given the right event, the numbers seem to hold up. Of course, this just doesn't happen by chance. When the location is central, the course is nice and the event is well organised, you can see the result. When you consider that it was a 10 km race as opposed to a 5 km then the turnout is even more impressive.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'UCC' 10 km road race - Sun 11th of April (11am)...
After a bit of a lull in the Cork BHAA calendar, they are starting off again with the UCC 10 km next Sunday. This is one of the oldest races in Cork and always attracts a large crowd.

Registration...
This year will be the same as last year. So to register, you need to go to the old red brick pavillion in the Mardkye sports grounds. Note that the refreshments and prizegiving is in a seperate building about 1 km away.

Here are the instructions from the race organisers regarding parking...

NO PARKING INSIDE THE ARENA GROUNDS,
however,
FREE parking in the new IT building (former Greyhound track) on Western Road
FREE parking on the Main UCC Campus
FREE parking in Castlewhite Apartments Car Park by Gaol Cross
FREE parking in Distillery Fields on the North Mall - across from the Maltings
also available parking in and around the Mardyke grounds, i.e. Lee Road and PAID parking in the Sacred Heart Church grounds.

Ideally for the more experienced runner, park in Distillery Fields, jog to registration, RACE, jog back to car (omitting shower in Mardyke) and walk across for the prizegiving (all weather dependent).

For a better idea of where the old pavillion is, use this link...http://pininthemap.com/d33af461acd75dd12

A flyer for the race can be found HERE

Course...
After you register, just follow the other runners accross the 'Shaky Bridge' to get to the start.
The first 200 metres or so is all downhill but soon you are on to the Lee road and it's pretty flat. Around the 2.5 mile mark, there is a good uphill section followed by a steep downhill bit around 3 miles. After that, it's more or less dead flat. You re-join the main road, go past The Anglers Rest pub and then join the Carrigrohane straight.
This last section is about 2 miles long and dead straight. Some people hate it as you can see the County Hall way off in the distance and it feels like it isn't getting any closer. To be honest, I can't see what difference it makes...you are at the 4 mile mark in a 10 km race and that's it.

The finish of the 10 km race is just beyond the County Hall. Keep it in mind as you run in the Straight Road....once you pass that building, you're almost there. The finish is just outside the Kingsley Hotel.

Water...
Please note that there are no water stations out along the course. Once you finish, they will have bottled water available.
Apres Race...
After the race, the refreshments and the prizegiving will be in the restaurant in the Lee Maltings. See map above. To see exactly where the Lee Maltings is, click on this link...
http://pininthemap.com/67404b694e24f13bb

If you would like to have a closer look at the course, I have put it up on the MapMyRun website. Click on the link below...http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/cork/527572334

Beginners....!!!
Considering that this race is just 3 weeks after Ballycotton, some of the newer runners might be wondering about doing this race? Sometimes I think that people starting off get the impression that the local road races are only for fast runners.......a bit like the Cork City Sports once a week! The UCC 10k race along with many of the other local races is just a scaled down version of the Ballycotton '10' race. Instead of 2,300 people running, you have around 200-300. The standard is the same...from the fast runners at the front racing to the not so fast at the rear who are just trying to finish. If you can run 10 kms / 6.25 miles at any kind of pace then you'll be fine.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'UCC' 10 km road race - Sun 5th of April (11am)
After a lull of about one month, the Cork Business Houses Athletic Association races are starting again in earnest. The next race in their busy calendar is the UCC 10 km race next Sunday. This race takes in the Lee Road and Straight Road and must be one of the oldest races on the local scene.

Registration...
This year will be the same as last year. So to register, you need to go to the old red brick pavillion in the Mardkye sports grounds. Please note that it is very expensive to park inside the Sports grounds. Note that the refreshments and prizegiving is in a seperate building about 1 km away. It might be an idea to park somewhere halfway between the two.

(By the way, if you are thinking about doing the Marathon in June, the 4 mile mark here is about the 22 mile mark in the Marathon. You will have to run from here, in the Straight Road, Western Road and finish in Patrick's Street. Anyway...back to the UUC race...)

They are asking runners to take only one bottle each so that there is some water left over for the slower runners.

Now for the interesting part!! This year again, there will be a draw for a Dell mini laptop in the Maltings Restaurant. There will be no tickets given out at the finish. They will just pick out a finisher at random regardless of whether they are in the hall or not. For all of the other spot prizes, the person must be in the hall.

Results of the Cork BHAA UCC 10 km Road Race - Sun 6th Apr 2008
They got a fine crowd for this race with 336 runners taking part, an increase of 41 on last years figure of 295. Conditions were very good...dry, bright and sunny with only a slight wind to worry about. If anything, we were sheltered from the worst of it for the first half and it was behind us for the 2nd half of the race. As per normal at the BHAA races, everything seemed to run very smoothly......registration, stewarding, refresments, prizegiving and so on.

The highlight of this years race was of course, the draw for the big prize, a Dell laptop. Alas, I didn't win :o( but it was nice to see that the person that did win it, was actually in the hall. It would have been a pity for someone to win it, not be there and for the ticket to be redrawn.

Results...
So on to the results. The full official results probably won't be out until Tuesday but John Walshe of Ballycotton Running Promotions has very kindly sent me on a copy which I have put up on a tempory webpage. As soon as the official results are out, I'll link to them but in the meantime, you can find the tempory results at....

http://homepage.eircom.net/~corkrunning/UCC10k_06apr08.htm

Next events...
Don't forget that next Sunday, the 13th of April is the date for the Kilnaboy 10 mile road race, the 4th and final race in the John Buckley Sports/Munster 10 mile Classic series (entry on the day). After that, we have the 4 mile race in Castlemartyr in East Cork on the 17th. The next Cork BHAA race is on the 29th of April. I'll have details of all of these races as we get closer.

Comments...
Anyone else like to comment of this race...???

"Thanks John for getting the results up so fast!! Interesting, I knocked 1min:30 off my time from last year but finished 18 places lower down. Its getting very competitive :-) .........Derek"

"I noticed that Derek. There seemed to be a lot of fast runners in the field yesterday. This year, I finished in 33rd position and was the 6th O40. Last year, the same time would have seen me in 17th position and 2nd O40. C'est la vie... ;o) ...........John Desmond"

"All that it means john is that your just getting older and there is no shame in that,33rd place, i would die if i was that quick.Regards...............To afraid to say in fair of backlash ha,ha"

"That sounds like M.T. !! ;o) Whatever about getting older, the last time I did this race was back in 2005 and I was 1m 28 seconds slower then! I know age is a factor long term but from year to year, the quantity and quality of the training has a much bigger impact.......or at least I hope it does!! We'll see in the Marathon ;o)........John Desmond"

"Oh get out of here i was only 6 place's behind you at the four mile mark, when i saw you jump on the back of a moped and you got off again at the 5 mile mark thats the reason you were quicker yesterday than in 2005 your not kidding anyone.Does anyone know who was driving that moped he should be banned from road race's for life, the BHAA should go through the cctv footage to establish the moped driver and ban him from aiding john desmond getting quicker times, maybe it was john walshe who was driving, god come to think about it those results were on the web very quick after the race??? .........Anonymous"

"Are you mad? Do you think if I got on a moped at 4 miles, I'd actually get off and start running again?!?!? Sod that, I'd stay on it ;o) .........and now I'm wondering, who was 6 places behind me at the 4 mile mark??? I'll have to get rear view mirrors.............John Desmond"

This race takes in the Lee Road and Straight Road and must be one of the oldest races on the local scene...I can even remember doing this race back in 1988!! Indeed, someone has just reminded me that this race started way back in 1983 and the race this year is the 25th anniversary.

Registration...
This year due to some building work, they are unable to use the Lee Maltings for registration, changing and showers.

(By the way, if you are thinking about doing the Marathon in June, the 4 mile mark here is about the 22 mile mark in the Marathon. You will have to run from here, in the Straight Road, Western Road and finish in Patrick's Street. Anyway...back to the UUC race...)
The finish of the 10 km race is just beyond the County Hall. Keep it in mind as you run in the Straight Road....once you pass that building, you're almost there. The finish is just outside the Kingsley Hotel.
Please note that when you finish, you will be given a ticket for a draw....hang onto it!
Water...
Please note that there are no water stations out along the course. Once you finish, they will have bottled water available.
Apres Race...
After the race, the refreshments and the prizegiving will be in the restaurant in the Lee Maltings. See map up top.

Now for the interesting part!! The following message was issued by the Cork BHAA...
" NEWSFLASH: A Laptop kindly sponsored by Dell Computers will be raffled amongst all race finishers. ALL FINISHERS will receive a ticket at the end of the race and the raffle will take place about 12.30pm in the Lee Maltings at the Prizegiving. THE WINNER MUST BE PRESENT to collect the prize in person (otherwise the ticket will be re-drawn!).....Cork BHAA "

Notice about the Cork BHAA UCC 10 km race on the 6th of April...
I received an e-mail from Cathal O'Connell of UCC during the week with regards to their upcoming 10km race on the 6th of April. This year due to some building work, they are unable to use the Lee Maltings for changing and showers and they want to get the word out early so that people will know about it.
So...
The race registration, changing and showers are in the old red brick pavillion in the Mardkye sports grounds.
The after race refreshments and prizegiving will be in the Lee Maltings restaurant.
The 2 locations are just over 1km apart. Click on the image above for a closer look.
