Work completed on the running track in Carrigaline - Sept 2021

Update 22nd Sept 2021: The new running track in Carrigaline has now been finished and is open to the public.

As you can see from the photos above and below courtesy of Cork County Council, they made a fine job of it.

The track which is behind the Community Centre is about 430 metres in length and it connects in to the other paths in the Community Park so that bigger loops can be completed. As outlined below, it could form the basis of a very nice weekly 2k parkrun for kids if the local community got the ball rolling.

Work on new running path in Carrigaline begins...

Back in September of 2019, I had a post up about how approval was given for a public running path in Carrigaline. The good news is that work on this has now commenced.

Press release from Cork County Council.... Contractors working on behalf of Cork County Council have this week commenced work on the new hybrid Running Track in Carrigaline Park. Access to the park is also being upgraded with additional seating areas being added in response to suggestions from the Carrigaline community, businesses and elected members at recent meetings for Cork County Council’s Project ACT.

An area in the park has been fenced off to allow a safe working zone for the contractor for the duration of the works. Cork County Council advises that it is still be possible to enjoy the other walks, green areas and facilities in the rest of the park during the period of construction.

Chief Executive of Cork County Council Tim Lucey said,

“As one of the county’s nine Metropolitan Towns, Carrigaline supports a large population, a strong community and a wide variety of businesses.  Through the Council’s Project ACT, investment in public amenities like these improvements to the park, as well as a number of infrastructural projects planned for the area, will ensure Carrigaline is well placed for a bright future.”

Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Ian Doyle welcomed the news of the start of works saying,

“Cork County Council avoided closing any section of this amenity while local residents were utilising it within their 2km zone. With restrictions on movement easing and other amenities now accessible work can continue onsite which is great news for local residents. This will be a fantastic addition to the park in Carrigaline and the project is expected to be completed within 6 weeks which should allow for the full reopening of the park before the August Bank holiday.”

The running track is a 1.2m wide path circling the lagoon in Carrigaline Park and replaces the existing gravel and tarmac path with a new surface of black rubber flex which is porous and helps drainage. It is also softer to run on and has better grip.

Approval given for running track in Carrigaline

At a Cork County Council meeting on Monday (15th of September 2019), a Green light was given to construct a running track near the Community Centre in Carrigaline.

The location is shown in the map above and as can be seen, it should be roughly 430 metres in length.

The plan is for the path to be 1.2 metres in width and it will have a special surface that is softer than tarmac or concrete but will be tough and resistant to wear and tear.

The project is expected to be put out to tender soon.

The initial plan does not include public lighting but it is hoped to add this at a later stage.

Possible junior parkrun??? ... Once the new track is up and running, it does raise the question of whether a weekly 2km junior parkrun would be viable in Carraline? These are for 4 to 14 year olds and are held on Sundays at 9:30am in various locations around the country.

New Floodlit Running Track opens in Mid Cork

A new Floodlit Running Track opens in Mid Cork...

A new running track has just opened in the village of Clondrohid to the north-west of Macroom in Mid-Cork. With assistance from West Cork Development Partnership (€199,290) and Cork County Council (€15,000) and the support of Airtricty, this new 250m floodlit track is a very welcome development for local athletes and runners.

More info......Floodlights for the new running track in Clondrohid (3km west of Macroom) will be hopefully be switched on from the 24th November 2014.  This 250m floodlit 4 lane rubber track also has an integrated 6 lane 100m sprint and run off area.  The track located on Clondrohid Community grounds is available free of charge to members of the public during daylight hours and a €2 fee applies when the lights are on. Overview of the site as it was being developed

Update on the measurements......Lane 4 is 250m in length with 6 lanes for the 100m sprint. This was measured by track contractor (Crawfords) who installed surface and contracted a company to line and measure same. The track is also marked for 200m with staggered starts on lanes 1-4 finishing at end of 100m straight.

While the main target audience is mainly people just keeping fit, the owners would welcome any feedback and suggestions from club or elite runners to improve their facilities.
