Results of the Liscarroll 10k road race...Fri 21st Aug 2015

While I was looking up the results of this race for 2014, I noticed that the numbers had dropped from 131 in 2013 to 85 last year. Looking through the comments, it seemed most thought is was due to it being just one day after the Ballycotton 5 mile race and just two days before an open cross country race in Newcastlewest in Limerick.

This year, the Liscarroll 10k was on a week ahead of last year and as dates go, it was reasonably uncrowded. A total of 97 runners turned out which is an improvement of 12 runners on last year but still well down on the 131 of 2013.

The winner of this years race was Michael Harty of East Cork AC who is having a cracking year. Not only did Michael win the race but he also set a new course record of 31:12 in the process. The previous record of 31:53 was set by Michael Herlihy in 2011.

There seems to have been a big drop in numbers this year with 85 runners taking part. Last year when it was part of the Ballyhoura Active Series, it had 131. Coming one day after the Ballycotton 5 probably didn't help either although the catchment area would be a bit different.

A record 148 runners attended this years Liscarroll 10k road race in North Cork, a 23% increase of the 2012 figure. This was the 10th race of 11 in the Ballyhoura Active race series which has been a huge success this year.

If you are coming from the direction of Cork City or Mallow, the easiest spot to turn off is at Buttevant. If you are coming from Limerick, then turn off for Churchtown.

The map below is of the town showing the Community Hall (inset) and the start / finish points. If you are coming from the direction of Buttevant on the R522 road, then you will drive down a long straight section of road as you enter the town. At the end where there is a bend in the road, take the right here and the Community Centre and GAA Hall is just up this road. Please note that the start point is approx 800 metres from the hall so give yourself plenty of time.

The course.......Basically, it is in the shape of a spoon. The race starts and finishes on a long straight flat section of road....

After several hundred metres, the road begins to twist and turn as you go uphill on what is a very slight hill. Just around where the road straightens out again, you pass the 1 mile mark. At the next Y junction at ~1.2 miles, you stay on the main road left....

This next section of road consists of long straight sections again and a slight uphill section. At approx 2.6 miles, you turn right at the next road junction...

Again, the next section is dead straight and flat. As you stay on the right hand side of the road here, you go through the 3 mile mark and turn off right at ~3.3 miles on to a quiet country road....

Now the road is narrower as it begins to climb slightly again until you hit the 4 mile mark...

After this, thie road is mostly straight and soon there is a gentle downhill as you rejoin the road that you were on earlier and head back towards the finish line just before the town.

Overall......Probably as fast a 10k course as you'll get. The hills are very modest and with the long straight sections, you are taking the shortest possible route most of the time. The start time of 7pm may be a little tight for people who have to travel to the race but it should still attract a reasonable crowd.

Results of the Liscarroll 10k race - Fri 2nd Sept 2011

This was the 8th race in the Ballyhoura Active Series and attracted a crowd of 120 runners. The mens race was won by Michael Herlihy of North Cork AC in a time of 32:57. The womens race was won by Tracey Roches of Dooneen AC in a time of 37:45.

Preview of the Liscarroll 10 km road race - Fri 3rd Sept 2010

This 10km road race in Liscarroll in North Cork is the 7th and final race in the very successful Ballyhoura Active Summer Series. The race starts at 7:30pm and is likely to attract a reasonable crowd. The entry fee is €10.

Getting there....Liscarroll is a few miles west of the N20 Cork - Mallow - Limerick road. If you are driving north from the Cork / Mallow then look for the turn off left in the town of Buttevant. Look for the R578 to Liscarroll. It should be the 2nd major turn to the left on the northern end of the town. Once in Liscarroll, look for the Community Centre near the GAA pitches.

Course....It basically is in the shape of a spoon and looks likely that it will be a very flat and fast course. You start on the northern side of the town. You head north taking a left just after the 1 mile mark, complete the loop clockwise and you rejoin the road just before the 5 mile mark and run back into the town.

Allow yourself plenty of time for Friday evening traffic, finding the registration and getting to the start.

Results of the Liscarroll 8 km Road Race - Sun 24th Aug 2008
There was a slight increase in numbers for this race in North Cork as 61 runners turned out for it.

"Such a pity that this race did not get a better attendance than 61 runners,its a very well organised event plenty of stewards very good prizes,very good course tough but good,i presume the Cork vs Kerry game had alot to do with it,also its only the second running of this race and i predict it will get better numbers each year,It was really nice to see a friend of mine getting first place in the lady senior catergory,June Twomey is a regular runner at nearly all the local races and some races far away and she really deserved that today,well done June.......John Dunphy, Midleton AC"

Preview of the Liscarroll 8 km Road Race - Sun 24th Aug (1pm)
The 'Tom Fitzpatrick Memorial 8km' road race takes place in Liscarroll in North Cork next Sunday, the 24th of August at 1pm. This is only the 2nd running of this race and last year, they got just 53 entries. Considering that they have dropped the entry fee from €15 to €10, I'd expect that the entry this year should be well up.
This is one race that I have never done but Donal O'Donoughue has come to the rescue and supplied the following info...
Last year it was a lovely Saturday evening, on dead-quiet roads. This year it seems to be Sunday lunchtime at 1pm. Last year, there was a perception that this was an "expensive" race, advertised at EUR 15, but turned out to be EUR 12 on the day.This issue may have discouraged some people ??? This year it's EUR 10. It's an 8km race, rather than a five-miler. DIRECTIONS..............From the City, head for Mallow on the N20. Go straight though at the first roundabout, and straight ahead at the second roundabout also. You will pass a Peugeot dealership, a Toyota dealership, and a Statoil/Topaz petrol station. Watch the concrete panel fence on the left side for a few hundred metres. Where this fence ends, take the left-turn, at the white sign "Lisgriffin" / "Liscarroll". You will almost immediately go under a high-arched railway bridge, and you're onto a country road that goes up and down, but is almost straight. Drive with care! Beware of farm traffic as it's harvest time.
Alternatively, one can continue from Mallow to Buttevant on the N20, and branch off to the left, at the far side of the town and follow the R578. Longer, but maybe a better quality of road ???
Either way, plan for *at least* a 45 minute journey from the point you get onto the N20 dual-carriageway beyond Blackpool.
REGISTRATION...................When you reach Liscarroll, take a right turn, Castle St, and head for registration at the Community Centre, which is perhaps 100m down this road, on the right-hand side. Last year there was a hand-drawn map of the course on display.
COURSE..............The start line is near the centre of the town, the route leads back towards the community centre, and then onto quiet country roads. The finish line is just beyond the Community Centre. No particular issues with parking last year.There was one water station about half-ways around the course. The outbound leg of the race is on almost deserted roads, but take care on the return leg on the R578 road. In 2007, the course appeared to be marked, in kilometres, in reverse order. Reasonably flat course. No particularly steep hills. There is one long gradual incline, but nothing to worry about. Refreshments after the race are in the Community Hall.
