A look at the Cloyne Commons 4k Series - 2014 to 2026
The Cloyne Commons 4k Winter Series in east Cork is somewhat unique in that it's one of the very few races outside of the BHAA where people can enter on the day for just €5. This is in marked contrast to other events which have online entry and fees of something like €15 to €25.
It is in a sense the last vestige of what typical road races used to be like in the past.
Each year, there are 5 events and they run from November to March. Now that the most recent series has finished, I had a look at the numbers. I went back over the results which I have up on the blog and calculated the average number per event for each of the series.
Some points..
1. First Race... The first race was back in November of 2014 so it has been going for over 10-years. Even though I post the results, I had no idea it went back that far. I was kind of expecting something like 2018/2019.
2. Average per series... The chart above shows the average number of finishers for each of the series. The most recent 2025/2026 series was a record one and passed the previous best which was 2019/2020.
3. Biggest race... The highest number of finishers in any one race was back in November of 2019 when 478 runners crossed the finish line. I have no idea why there were so many that day.
4. March 2020... There was no race that month due to the pandemic so there were only 4 races for the 2019/2020 series. The fact that so many people turned out in Nov 2019 and there wasn't a 5th race to bring down the average meant that the 2019/2020 numbers are a lot higher than before.
5. 49 races... I've updated some of the older results posts and if you want to see the results of any of the 49 races so far than you can use this link to scroll back to find the results.

Impact of the 'Women in Sport' campaign on local parkruns in Cork - March 2026
In the lead up to the 5k parkruns last weekend, there was a fair amount of publicity promoting parkrun and 'Women in Sport'. I was wondering if there was any impact from the publicity? Did the female numbers increase?
I looked at the number of male and female finishers for the 11 parkruns in Co Cork for the 28th of February and the 7th of March 2026. The results suggest that the number of female participants increased by about 4% on the 7th of March compared to the previous week.
There are some caveats however...
The stats don't include the 'UKNOWN' finishers in the results. I assume the male/female percentages for the unknowns is the same as the overall percentages but it's impossible to be sure.
These are the stats for just two Saturdays so the sample size is small. A 4% increase is pretty small and some of that may due to a natural week to week variability.
Out of the eleven 5k parkruns in Cork, female participation was up in 6, down in 4 and the same for 1. This means that there wasn't a universal increase for all events even though the overall average increased.
For the 7th of March, these are the 11 events in order of female participation...
1. Bere Island at 74.2%, up from 61.5% the previous week.
2. Castlehaven at 70.6%, up from 38.1% the previous week.
3. Glengarriff at 62.9%, up from 56.6% the previous week.
4. Youghal at 56.9%, up from 45.9% the previous week.
5. Mallow at 51.1%, down from 52.3% the previous week.
6. Ballincollig at 48.1%, up from 46.8% the previous week.
7. Tramore Valley Park at 46.4%, down from 49.6% the previous week.
8. Midleton at 45.4%, up from 44.5% the previous week.
9. Macroom at 43.8%, down from 44.1% the previous week.
10. Clonakilty at 40.4%, up from 35.6% the previous week.
11. Glen River at 40%, the same as the previous week.
It's interesting that the top 3 in terms of female participation were all in west Cork. While the numbers at Castlehaven are very low and it doesn't take much to have a huge variation in the percentages, Bere Is and Glengarriff were still at 1 and 2 the previous week.
Again, it's worth noting that the stats above are from just two Saturdays and a lot more data points are needed to get an accurate picture. It does though suggest a trend in the differences between events.
In conclusion... I started looking at the stats trying to see if the 'Women in Sport' campaign had any impact and the answer for that question was not a completely conclusive 4%.
While looking at the data, another question popped up... why is the female participation in some events higher than others? I'm not sure there is a simple answer.

Course... This is the confirmed route for 2026 and this year, it stays away from the Centre Park Road. The race starts and finishes near Kennedy Park. It goes down Monahan Road, does a loop around the newly refurbished Marina Park and then back via Monahan Road.
The photos below show part of the course in the new Marina Park. The paths have been widened which means they can now accommodate a 5k race.
The new course also goes past the refurbished Barrington's Folly...
The key thing to remember is that the start and finish lines are near Kennedy Park and about 600m from the race HQ at One Albert Quay.

West Waterford AC sign lease to develop new athletics track in Dungarvan
West Waterford Athletic Club recently signed a lease with St Augustine’s College to develop a new 8-lane athletics track in Dungarvan.
West Waterford AC press release... "In 1842 Irish Augustinian Friars established Villanova University in the USA, one of the most prestigious Universities for Track and Field in the world. This is the University where Irish Olympic Gold medallist Ronnie Delany, Eamonn Coghlan and Sonia O’Sullivan along with a host of other Irish international athletes all studied and competed.
St. Augustine’s College, Dungarvan is steeped in athletics tradition lead by the Brother Patrick Lennon OSA. The school is listed 4th in an Athletics Ireland “Top Irish Athletics Schools of All Time”.
Both St. Augustine’s College and West Waterford A.C. have nurtured the talents of many students who have excelled on both the national and international stage over many years. The Friary has been the home of West Waterford A.C. since the club was founded in 1994, hosting numerous County, Provincial and National athletics cross country championships as well as club training sessions and the annual primary school sports.

February 27th 2026 will be remembered as a red letter day in the history of the club and St Augustine’s College as it was the date a lease was signed between both parties for a parcel of land for West Waterford AC to construct an 8 lane athletics facility.
Such a facility will serve all the athletic clubs in the region as well as schools and the wider West Waterford community.
Principal of St Augustine’s College John Keane stated “Everyone in the St. Augustine's school community are delighted with the news of this fantastic project. It will provide excellent opportunities for the students in our college and the people of Waterford. I would like to thank the members of West Waterford Athletic Club for their commitment to this development and the Augustinian School Trust for their generosity in providing access to the site. We look forward to working together to deliver this athletics track and facilities over the coming years”.
Olympian and West Waterford AC Trustee Jamie Costin stated “Having travelled the world as an athlete and competed on many different athletics tracks, it has always been a dream to have an athletics track and field facility in Dungarvan. Such an amenity will provide opportunities for the next generation of children in the region to try the various disciplines the sport has to offer. There is a long road ahead before this project is delivered however with the support of Waterford City and County Council and the wider community we can construct a facility that we can all be truly proud of.”
To mark the occasion of signing the lease, the club made a special presentation to their club President Brother Patrick Lennon OSA.

West Waterford AC will now move to the design phase before submitting a planning application to Waterford City and County Council in the coming months.

Analysis... This is a major development for athletics in Waterford and east Cork. There are existing 400m athletic tracks in Waterford City, Cork City and Clonmel but they are all quite a distance from Dungarvan. It's 30kms or a 30 min drive from Youghal to Dungarvan so it's not hard to imagine this new track having a big impact on athletics in east Cork.
It costs something like €1.5 million to develop a new athletics track so this is quite an undertaking for the club. West Waterford AC already hosts the second largest 10-mile road race in Ireland so that should hopefully fund part of it over time.
There will obviously be some government sports grants in the mix along the way but signing the lease is an important first step in what will probably be a long journey.
How long will it take? West Limerick AC developed an athletics track in Newcastle West in Co Limerick over the last decade. The final feasibility study for the project was published in 2016 and the track opened in 2023... i.e seven years.
If we apply the same criteria to Dungarvan then we get a completion date of 2033.
